"The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show HIS SERVANTS (emphasis mine)what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw--that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near." Revelation 1:1-3 The phrase "then I looked" is used four times in The Revelation of Jesus to John. As I was thinking about how Revelation unfolds in such a jumbled way, a modern day example came to mind. Picture being in a broadcast studio. Before you are television monitors, each capturing a different scene. At times we might be intructed to watch a certain event and at other times our eyes might wander from screen to screen. We could report what we were viewing, but because it was all happening silmultaneously, it would be difficult to place each vista in its proper sequence. Without information and guidance, the viewer might not know if he was watching footage from the past or film of the present. (We know in John's case, all that he was seeing was in the future!) The Apostle John might as well have been in a similar situation as he watched the future unfold before his eyes! We residents of the 21st century have the ability to comprehend what John could only describe in first century language. (Perhaps, at times, even John chose to report his vision in a "politcally correct" manner!) Coupling the Old and New Testament prophecies, we are able to begin to recognize a pattern and perhaps even begin to establish an order of sequence for events of the future. I believe that if we would read The Revelation with this illustration in mind, we might have a better understanding of what is happening today as well as what will happen in the very near future. For as John recorded what he was seeing, he may well have jumped from "monitor" to "monitor" and then, he may have wandered back to ones he had already written about. This might be a possible explanation for the way The Revelation was recorded! As we read this womderful part of God's Word, I believe it makes no difference which "screen" we choose to watch - for all will bring a blessing as promised in Rev 1:3 . Therefore, let us, as HIS SERVANTS, to be thankful that we do not have to be really concerned about the order of events -for we know that they will happen, in God's way and in HIS timing. We can be assured on one thing - in the END, GOD WINS! (and so do we!) PS: Notice that the Conclusion of The Revelation is the same as the Prologue: "The angel said to me, 'These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show HIS SERVANTS (emphasis mine)the things that must soon take place.' " Revelation 22:6 |
