1 | The Blessing of Our Future Inheritance! | 1 Pet 1:4 | Morant61 | 21564
A Study of 1 Peter 1:4………………………………………….. In verse four, Peter introduces us to what (I believe) is the most ignored aspect of our salvation - our future inheritance. Not only are we blessed because we have received the gift of new birth, we also are blessed because there is still more to come. There is an historical objective aspect to our salvation. Our sins were forgiven and atoned for at the Cross! We have been regenerated and sanctified! But there is still much more to come - there is a rich inheritance waiting for us in eternity. This concept is mentioned many times in the New Testament: 1) Col. 3:24 says that we will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward for our service. 2) Heb. 9:15 says that we can receive the promised eternal inheritance because of Christ’s death and the New Covenant. 3) Eph. 1:14 says that the Holy Spirit is the "deposit" guaranteeing our inheritance. 4) Eph. 1:18 literally refers to the "many glories" of our inheritance as saints. 5) Eph. 5:5 and Acts 20:32 both limit this inheritance to Christians. 6) Gal. 3:18 tells us that the inheritance is received through grace alone. After informing us that we have an inheritance coming, Peter lists three adjectives to describe the lasting nature of this inheritance: a) It is imperishable. b) It is undefiled, and c) It is unfading. But, our inheritance isn’t defined by these characteristics arbitrarily. These three qualities can be ascribed to it because of God’s active protection of it. It is being kept or guarded for us in Heaven by God. In other words, this was an inheritance that could be relied upon. What a word of hope to a church which was suffering because of it’s faith! What a word of hope for us as well! Not only do we get the objective accomplished benefits of the new birth, we also have a rich inheritance awaiting us at the end of our lives. No wonder Paul said in Rom. 8:22-25: "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently." No amount of suffering can even begin to compare to the blessings of the new birth and the eternal inheritance awaiting those who have placed their faith in Christ! 2 | The Blessing of Our Future Inheritance! | 1 Pet 1:4 | Roseann1220 | 21993
Inheritance should not be given as a result of a reward but it is a birth-right;it can be limited on a reward/punishment basis - do you agree?
3 | The Blessing of Our Future Inheritance! | 1 Pet 1:4 | Morant61 | 21994
Greetings Roseann1220! I agree partially! There are passages of Scripture where our inheritance is spoken of in terms of our sonship. But, Col. 3:24 uses the word "reward or recompence." Thus, in that verse our inheritance is viewed as something we receive because we persevered. So, I think both elements are present. It just depends on which particular verse you are looking at!
