1 | Where is Dan? | Josh 19:40 | kalos | 2581
Rev. 7:6 "Manasseh. One of the two Joseph tribes (Ephraim and Manasseh), yet mentioned separately, probably to make up 12 tribes since Dan is omitted. This omission is due perhaps to Dan's early connection with idolatry (Judg 18:30)" (p. 1857, Zondervan NASB Study Bible, Zondervan, 1999). . . . If it is true that, "Dan is not listed because the purpose of the chapter is not to set forth the twelve tribes of Israel as set forth in the OT," then why pick on Dan? If this is the reason, why not omit any old tribe at random? Why does it have to be Dan? |

This is my point exactly! Why pick on Dan? If we are not to take it literally , then why list any tribe at all? There has to be some significance in this omission.

I've got in NKJV Nelson Study Bible, "Dan and Ephraim are omitted perhaps because of their gross idolatry during the period of the judges, demonstrated by the incident in Dan (see Judg. 18)." JFB Rev 7:5,"another akin for the omission of Dan, is, its having been the first to lapse into idolatry (#Jud 18:1-31); for which same reason the name Ephraim, also (compare #Jud 17:1-3 Ho 4:17), is omitted, and Joseph substituted. Also, it had been now for long almost extinct." Also, I take these verses literally to be Jewish people; they do not, in my interpretation, represent a sympol of "completeness" or a symbol of the church. I believe the Church (caps because we will be HOLY then) will have been raptured before this point, and this seal protects the 144000 Jews, who will save many other Jews from damnation. GOD bless! |

Omission because of that reason makes sense to me. I view idolatry as a form of blasphemy which is an unpardonable sin.
