1 | What causes a holier than thou attitude? | James 4:4 | Mommapbs | 84483 | ||
Greetings Scribe - I am reminded of the passage, "For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things?" 2 Cor 2:15-16. I appreciate your encouragement to walk in the Light and remain devoted to Christ (which will result in holiness as Christ lives through me), However I struggle a bit with the directive you suggest that I "reproove their deeds by my lifestyle." This, in my opinion, may result in a "holier than thou attitude" that some believers exhibit in response to those who do not know Christ (as well as to other believers who do not measure up to their standard of "holy living!") See Ex 34:30 - perhaps when others perceive that we have "been with the Lord," they too respond in fear which is manifest in behaviors that we misinterpret personally. As the Lord said to Samuel when Israel asked for a king, "for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them." 1 Sam 8:7 What might be some causes of a "holier than thou" attitude toward others who are in rebellion? How do we guard against this? mommapbs |

Hi mommapbs: "However I struggle a bit with the directive you suggest that I "reproove their deeds by my lifestyle." " I appreciate the message as believers do often demonstrate this unholy attitude. But I do not believe it comes from living a holy lifestyle, but rather an attitude of legalism and comparing themselves with others. Often when believers will not participate in unholy behaviour, they are accused of having a 'holier than thou' attitude when in reality they are just being obedient and faithful. The prideful heart causes this attitude, but most believers are not operating in pride even though they may be accused of doing so. Ephesians 5:11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; Our lifestyle of holiness will cause conviction by revealing God's true will to the lost or disobedinet believers. I personally believe this accusation comes from disobedient believers than from the lost world. God bless |

Graceful, interesting observation . . . "this accusation (a holier than thou attitude) comes from disobedient believers than from the lost world." Are believers who exhibit this attitude disobedient? Or are you saying that believer who perceives this attitude in another Christian is the disobedient one? As for me, I see legalism is the generator of the holier than thou attitude in fellow believers. And in my opinion, legalism denies the sufficiency of the Grace of God. Therefore, the one with the legalistic mindset is at enmity with the Spirit - what causes division among you? Jude 1:19 Just some thoughts . . . mommapbs |

Hi Mommapbs, My point is that just because one is accuesd, does not mean he is guilty,but should allow the Holy Spirit to examine his heart. And the accuser should be examining his or her own heart to know the source of the accusation. " Are believers who exhibit this attitude disobedient? Or are you saying that believer who perceives this attitude in another Christian is the disobedient one?" ometimes believers who are walking in dosobedience and are convicted by brothers or sisters who are being obedient and will take a 'self justification' attitude. To accuse their obedient brothers or sisters of pride (the source of a holier than thou attitude) somehow makes them feel better. This attitude will be sin because it is revellion against the conviction of the Holy Spirit, a hardening of the heart. Sometimes young believers will sucumb to the pressure to 'prove' they are not 'holier than thou' and join in the disobedient acts. AS believers we should, rather, ask the Holy Spirit to examine and reveal any uncleanness (pride) and if there is none, pray for the accuser, and continue in obedience. "As for me, I see legalism is the generator of the holier than thou attitude in fellow believers. And in my opinion, legalism denies the sufficiency of the Grace of God. Therefore, the one with the legalistic mindset is at enmity with the Spirit - what causes division among you? Jude 1:19" I agree. Both legalists and moralist place their faith in their works of righteousness rather than the righteousness of Jesus we receive through faith. Thus the HEART of the matter is pride. Any believer can fall into this trap of comparing ourselves with others as the Pharasee and the Publican, so we should guard our heart and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what is in our heart regularly, as opposed to assuming because we are not committing 'external' and odvious acts of sin, we must be OK. We can be walking the walk and talking the talk, and our heart be in sin. God bless. Our pastor was teaching on this last night reminding believers that the externally actions are the RESULT or the manifestation of the sinful state of the heart. God bless |
