I once heard that Jews did that because they regard the name of God extremely highly, so highly that they dare not even spell it out all the way. It also holds respect to the name God as well. But as far as truth, I am not sure how close this is... | ||||||

I have read a book called "In the beginning" by Alister McGrath (very good read) about how the King James translation came about, and in there he says that the Hebrew used to write the old Testament does not contain vowel's (aeiou), so a name or word is sounded together and the reader puts in the correct sound when the word is read aloud. Hence the Name of God - YHWH (vowel sounds are left out). Hope this helps, Tooms. |
