According to the footnotes in the KJV Study Bible Paul is "speaking of the ordination of an elder, which should not be performed until the candidate has had time to prove himself. as far as the 2nd pt. of this scripture which says "neither be partaker of other men's sins" it is saying do not ordain a person unworthy of the office of elder. "keep thyself pure" refers to a refusal to become involved in the ordination of an unworthy candidate for that office. This scripture does Not mean that if the Holy Spirit is leading you to minister to someone by the laying on of hands, that you shouldn't. On the contrary. We are to be obedient and always be led by the Spirit of God. If youi jump over to 2 Tim. 1:6 you will see there it says " Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee by putting on of my hands." and also in Acts 6:3-6 where there were chosen "7 men full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom and of honest report whom we may appoint over this business." They carried out certain duties of distributing funds to the widows who had no one to care for them and so became the church's responsibility. Therefore the apostles "laid their hands on them." (the 7 chosen for this) The laying on of hands accdg. to the notes on this scripture in the KJV is very clear and ties in both the old and new testament. | ||||||
