Hi, Readytogo! In the Old Testament God commanded the people of Israel to offer the tenth of their possession (money, grains, oils, perfumes, animals…) to the Temple. This particular offering was orchestrated for the support and maintenance of the Levites and the Temple. In the New Testament Temple worship is done away with, the Church of Christ is established and a new format is used (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-12; Ephesians 4:28; Colossians 3:14) and fellowship is sought in Christ (Colossians 3:15). True, we should use our talents (gifts) to edify the Church--but these should not excuse us from assisting monetarily the Church and our family members (Matthew 19:21); we must realize that all of our abilities (talents/gifts) proceed from God (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) so, unless our financial situation deprives us from doing so we are to give generously--within our financial means! God Bless! Angel |
