Hello Dayofori, As was stated, the purpose of this Forum is specifically Bible study. Certainly, one's relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ is paramount! According to "Who's Who in Christian History": SWEDENBORG, EMANUEL (1688–1772) "Swedish scientist, philosopher, and theologian A native of Stockholm, Swedenborg demonstrated a scholar’s interest in a variety of subjects: mathematics, engineering, physics, general science, music, astronomy, natural history. He studied Isaac Newton intensely. Many inventions resulted from his research, among which was a design of a submarine and a flying machine. Some of his conclusions reached by inductive argument alone are close to the theories of modern nuclear physics. Swedenborg published widely in scientific fields, began a respected periodical, and produced the first treatise on algebra in the Swedish language. He was regarded as one of the leading thinkers of his day. In spite of his many scientific achievements, Swedenborg is known chiefly for his work in theology. In 1743 he asserted that he gained spiritual insight in direct response to a divine vision and call. From that time, he felt as consciously attuned in the spiritual world as he was in the natural world, noting that he was in communication with angels and spirits. He claimed to have conversed on various theological points with Martin Luther, the apostle Paul, and other deceased authorities. His otherworld experiences have caused some to regard him as a “medium.” Swedenborg’s previous purpose had been to explore nature, chemistry, and the sciences of mining and anatomy. After 1743, he held that God had selected him for revealing the spiritual meaning of sacred Scriptures. Swedenborg saw a logical progression from the natural to the spiritual, and for this reason, he believed, he was introduced first to the natural sciences as preparation for the spiritual. According to Swedenborg, man is born natural, by education becomes moral, and afterwards by regeneration from the Lord, he becomes spiritual. He argued that the many volumes of theological works he penned on such subjects as the last judgment and heaven and hell constituted a revelation from God for a new age of truth and reason in religion that provided the meaning of the second advent. Swedenborg’s theology maintained the absolute unity of God in essence and person, rejecting what he regarded as the traditional doctrine of the Trinity as three persons in one God. Instead, he held that the Trinity is one person uniting the Father (Creator Divine), the Son (embodiment of that Divine), and the Holy Spirit (outflowing activity of the Divine Human). He was averse to the doctrine of salvation by faith alone. Rather, he thought that God imparts righteousness to whomever he chooses, even to those who have not repented. Swedenborg did not found a new church. Around 1784 some of his disciples, however, founded The New Jerusalem Church, which remains small in size, with branches throughout the world." His teachings are neither orthodox and deny the full, plenary insiration of the Bible. I trust this will help, BradK |
