1 | Temple of the Holy Spirit | 1 Cor 6:19 | Ngop | 105432
1 Cor 6:19 : ..... "your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit....". My question is: Is it possible that the word " body" was erroneously translated? My reason is :1. Genesis 2:7 says Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. How can God Holy Spirit dwell in the dust. 2. "Soma" the original word can be "body" or "substance". Could it be the substance of man is the breath of life from God. If so, it could then be the Holy Spirit dwells in the Breath of God in man. The temple of the Holy Spirit is the Breath of God not the body? God bless Ngop |

2 | Temple of the Holy Spirit | 1 Cor 6:19 | Morant61 | 105439
Greetings Ngop! May I take a stab at your questions? 1) First, Gen. 2:7 says that our bodies were formed FROM the dust of the earth. But, it does not say that they ARE dust. Secondly, I know of no Scripture which says that God's Spirit cannot dwell in dust if He so choose! :-) 2) Your second question is answered from the context of 1 Cor. 6. Look at how the word 'soma' is used in this passage. a) 1 Cor. 6:13 - "'Food for the stomach and the stomach for food' — but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body." b) 1 Cor. 6:16 - "Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, 'The two will become one flesh.'" c) 1 Cor. 6:18 - "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body." d) 1 Cor. 6:19 - "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;" e) 1 Cor. 6:20 - "you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." I believe that it is clear from the above verses that Paul uses 'soma' in reference to the physical body of man. We could even go on to some other examples in 1 Corinthians and see how Paul uses the word 'soma'. f) 1 Cor. 9:27 - "No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." g) 1 Cor. 13:3 - " If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." The only place where Paul uses the term in other than a physical sense is in 1 Cor. 12 where the term is applied to the Church. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
