1 | Tongues speaking selfish w/o interteper? | 1 Cor 14:4 | Searcher56 | 148265
Susan, I agree, in part, with your post 148122 "Tongues for Spiritual edification (1 Cor 14:4)" ... I would say tongues for our own SELFISH spiritual edification. The purpose of any of the gifts is to edify the church (1 Cor 12-14). |

Greetings Searcher56! I have been harping over unscriptural assumptions on this topic for several days now! :-) Where exactly does Scripture use the term 'selfish' for the edification that takes place in speaking to one's self and to God? Is this a dictum of Scripture or an assumption? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

"So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church" (1 Cor 14:12). Tim, I think I have Scriptural support. Also, as I read chapter 12 there were problems with people and their view on gifts. If I don't exercise my gifts, the church suffers. We need all the gifts, else the church would be incomplete. If I am into self edification (not for the church), am I selfish? Searcher |

4 | Tongues speaking selfish w/o interteper? | 1 Cor 14:4 | Morant61 | 148286
Greetings Searcher! I don't want to be too hard on you, you are a dear friend! But, this is still an assumption. The word is never used in regards to the gift of tongues. Paul uses the same word for edification for the individual and the church, so why would one be 'bad' and the other 'good'? The most that can be said from the text is that Paul would rather have things done that edifies the church as a whole. However, since Paul does not forbid the 'private' use of tongues, I would not go beyond the text and call it selfish. :-) The gift of tongues is definitely regulated in 1 Corinthians. Therefore, why go beyond what the text says. The text is quite clear. 1) If there is no interpreter, keep quiet and speak to yourself and to God. 2) The number of speakers should be limited to two or three at the most. 3) No more than one should speak at once. I am operating off of memory here, so forgive me if I forgot any! :-) I do note, however, that most of these regulations are ignored in churches where tongues is practiced today. :-( Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
