Good question.. Webster's New World College Dictionary states, "lukewarm. adj. 2. not very warm or enthusiastic.." "Lukewarm"; (Greek) 'chliaros' from 'chlio' (to become warm); tepid, warm:—lukewarm (1)." (NASB Exhaustive Concordance) "'chliaros' (khlee-ar-os') From 'chlio' (Greek) 'to warm'; tepid:—lukewarm." (Strong's Exhaustive Concordance) "3:14 Laodicea. A city about 90 mi. (145 km) due E of Ephesus and 45 mi. (72 km) SE of Philadelphia. Under Roman rule it was a wealthy city. The Amen. The One who guarantees confirmation and certainty of all He says. 3:16 The lukewarm or neutral or compromising or accommodating church is repulsive to the Lord and damaging to His purpose. I will spit you out of My mouth. Lit., I will vomit." (Ryrie Study Bible) "3:16 Neither cold nor hot. The church at Laodicea had become self-confident and passive on all issues, unaware of its basic needs and obligations." (Cambridge Annotated Study Bible) "Hot Apostasy: vv. 14-18. (Luke 18:8; 2 Tim 3:1, note)" (New Scofield Study Bible) "Cold water is refreshing; hot water is useful for medical purposes. Lukewarm water is neither. By analogy, the works of the Laodicean church made Christ want to vomit the believers out of His mouth. In very vivid terms, the Lord rejects the halfhearted efforts of self-satisfied Christians." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible) I come to the conclusion that the words "lukewarm" and "backsliding" are 'like terms' when considered in the spiritual sense. Therefore, 'lukewarm' an adjective describing 'apostasy' or willfully turning away from the Lord. We must be zealous and not fall into this trap of lukewarmness which leads to apostasy!! Nolan |
