Dear karuso, Oh yes, those heady days of Biblical minimalism. No, wait, those were the 90s. No, wait, its still happening! :-) I think humbled hit most of them. You might try doing a Google search for them. I've never been certain why the Roman Road was so popular. Formulas are rarely successful. People are individuals with individual questions, concerns, doubts, etc. God doesn't often save one person exactly the way He saves another. I believe He wants us to thoroughly know the Word of God so that we may always be ready to give an answer (2 Timothy 2:15). Basically what I'm trying to say here is that you should be sure that you aren't trying to find a "one-size-fits-all" kind of solution to evangelism. Nevertheless, God bless you in your efforts to share the faith. In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc, I hear what your saying and I agree we need to keep digging and learn as much as we can regarding the word of God. Not just for ourselves but for the very reasons you mention. However, not everyone is a theologian but even the least among us can share the gospel. I know, I share it all the time! Thankfully, the more learned among us was graceful enough to help the not so learned to share the gospel message. My guess is that these types of things are popular because most Christians are not bible scholars but many of them do have a passion to share the gospel. Guess how many verses from the bible was shared with me the day I was saved??? One! There is power in the word Brother! I know you know that! ;-) PS. I've never used the "Roman Road" my self but I have used some of the verses. There good ones! God Bless! Steve |

Dear Brother Steve, I understand what you are saying, and I do not take exception with it. However, lest we leave an improper impression with our readers: Christianity is all about knowledge, a deep kind of knowledge made efficacious through the work of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, every believer should be working hard to "master" the Scriptures. After all, God has taken great pains to ensure that they are made available to us. We should at least place as high a significance to the Word as does God. :-) Now, there is one thing I'd like to quibble over a bit. You wrote, "not everyone is a theologian." I disagree... I am strongly of the opinion that EVERYONE is a theologian. Theology asks a wide variety of questions that we all deal with: Who is God? What is He like? What has He said? Who are men? What is sin? Etc. Etc. Etc. All people have positions on these questions. The real issue is how much thought and study we've all put into answering these questions. One can categorize believers into five broad groupings: 1. Folk Theologians -- Majority of the a congregation 2. Lay Theologians -- A small percentage of a congregation 3. Ministerial Theologians -- Pastors and Teachers 4. Academic Theologians -- Teachers who teach pastors and teachers theology 5. Professional Theologians -- Theologians who make a living at it Folk theologians tend to just take what they hear and accept it without question. Lay theologians listen, read, study, and question on a very part-time basis. Ministerial theologians are pastors and teachers who study full-time in order to teach congregations. Academic theologians are professors at seminaries. Professional theologians make a living at theology and are on the cutting edge theological thought. Certainly God has not called everyone to be a pastor, a teacher, a professor, etc. However, I firmly believe that God wants the rest of believers to rise into category #2 (Colossians 1:9). Consequently, let us encourage everyone to persevere in their study. Crib notes have their place, but God wants us to know Him deeply, thoroughly, and intimately. In Him, Doc "Resolved, to study the Scriptures so steadily, constantly and frequently, as that I may find, and plainly perceive myself to grow in the knowledge of the same." --Jonathan Edwards (Resolution #28) |
