1 | Spirit Baptism | Acts 8:12 | C.S.M. | 155237 | ||
Dear Iktoose, Do you believe that everything Jesus needed to live a successful life on earth we need? Do you believe that he came as our example from God, as to the how to’s, of living a life before God on earth? I do. Therefore consider these verses concerning Spirit Baptism. John 1:17-36 is a confrontation between John the Baptist and the religious leaders concerning Jesus. John identifies himself to them as “one crying in the wilderness” as Isaiah told would come. He continues by saying “he that sent me” (verse 33, meaning God the Father) to baptize with water..said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on him the same is he which BAPTIZES WITH THE HOLY GHOST.” Who did John see this happen to? “And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God...looking on Jesus ..he said, Behold the Lamb of God!” Jesus was baptized with the Holy Spirit by God the Father, because Jesus didn’t baptize himself with the Holy Ghost did he. Then we realize it is necessary because God revealed to John that Jesus would be the one who baptizes mankind with the Holy Ghost. When did Jesus say the Holy Spirit would come? John 16:7 Only after Jesus left the earth! “if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, “I” will send him unto you.” This was AFTER his resurrection, after he left the earth to sit at God’s right hand. Who was going to ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit? John 14:16-17 “I (Jesus) will pray (ask) the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter...even the Spirit of truth..” This was the promise of God the Father, through Jesus the Son, to send the Holy Spirit as our comforter, teacher, guide into all of God’s truth. John 17:17 Did Jesus tell his disciples he would send the promise of his Father, which was the sending of the Holy Spirit? Luke 24:49 “Behold I (Jesus) send the promise of the Father upon you...tarry in Jerusalem (how long?) until you be endued with power from on high.” Where’s that? God the Father’s very presence! Who is the power giver? God! It is believed Luke is the writer of the Acts..and continues to expound on the facts! Acts 1:1-3. Then he writes what Jesus said, “wait for the PROMISE of the Father, which, saith he (Jesus), you have heard OF ME (Jesus). For John baptized with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost..” How did Jesus know? John 1:33 John said Jesus would baptize with the Holy Ghost sent from God! How can you be sure the promise is talking about the Holy Spirit? Acts 2:33 Peter, preaching, “This Jesus has God raised up...and having received of the Father THE PROMISE of the Holy Ghost, has shed forth this which you now see and hear.” Acts 2:38-39 “you shall receive the GIFT of the Holy Ghost. For the PROMISE is unto you and your children..” When was this done? Acts 2:1-4.. So we see God the Father, sent God the Son to pay for sins, and after Jesus sat down at God’s right hand and asked God to send God Holy Spirit, Acts 2:33, God kept his promise to mankind through Jesus! I John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven , (God) the Father, (God) the Word (i.e. Jesus), and (God) the Holy Ghost: and these THREE are one.” How are they one? “In Spirit and in Truth” John 4:24 How are true worshipers to worship “In spirit and in truth” John 4:23 How are believers one with God? John 17:11 In spirit and in truth....as we are one Jesus said. Jesus is the most true worshiper of God in the universe! What Jesus needed we need, he was baptized with the Holy Spirit, we need the same thing he needed. Jesus said don’t go into ministry without it, Luke 24:49. Jesus said the power would come AFTER the Holy Ghost came upon them..Acts 1:8. What happened after the Holy Ghost came on them? Acts 2:4 we need this Spirit baptism as Jesus needed this Spirit and power baptism. Always In Christ, C.S.M. |

Hi C.S.M, First, I want to thank you for the detailed reply. Although you missed my point slightly... but that's okay. We all do. Let me see if I can clarify this so that you may understand my point. In Acts 8:12-17, deacon Philip baptized believers (with water) in the name of Jesus but the believers did not receive the Holy Spirit apparently. Then apostles John and Peter came and prayed for the believers and laid their hands on them (v. 17) and the believers received the Holy Spirit. My understanding as a believer always has been that the Holy Spirit comes into you the moment you receive Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and Savior and dwells with you the rest of your life. I also believe that the water baptisim is a ceremony to let the congregation know you are a full pledged Christian. But Acts 8:12-17 seem to contradict my belief. This passage suggests that a water baptism suppose to give the believers the Holy Spirit (v. 16). Also suggests that only Apostles have the authority/power (gift of God) to give the believers the Holy Spirit. Your thoughts on this? iktoose |

Hi Iktoose, Aug 4, 2005 Sorry I didn’t make myself clear to you, I’ll try again, with both of us agreeing that the Holy Spirit himself will guide us both into the revelation of these scriptures and mutual understanding more completely. My problem used to be that I put all things of scripture into one basket, shook it all up together, then poured it out and tried to make sense out of it. Scripture admonishes us to “rightly divide” the word, then tells us how we can accomplish that process. II Tim 2:15. This verse implies that if the word of God can be rightly divided, it can also be wrongly divided. Salvation, as most of us understand it (i.e. being born again), was not available until AFTER Jesus rose from the dead. The Holy Spirit, also called the anointing, in the Old Testament was only for the prophet, priest and king, of God’s choice. When Jesus declared he must go away so the Holy Spirit could come (in the New Testament) why was this necessary? John 16:17. It is my belief that it was because Jesus, being in the form of man, operating in the earth in total obedience to God the Father, filled the bill of “one obedient man.” Phil 2:5-11. Why was this necessary? God does nothing apart from his word, that is forever settled in heaven (i.e. it never changes, so it puts us in the position of needing change). Psm 119:89. Mankind, starting with the first Adam, was never “absolutely” obedient to God. Jesus was..he stated over and over in the New Testament in various forms of the same thought, “I came to do thy will O God.” John 4:34, 5:30, 6:38, Heb 10:5-10. The purpose of sending the Holy Spirit was, Jesus was confined to one body, his, and could only speak to the people in his presence in that body. The Holy Spirit however is everywhere present, in the whole world, and can speak to all of us at once, if he so desires. When God said, “forget not to communicate” it was not strictly for us, but it is the way he operates himself, communication on the “broad band.” The Holy Spirit, loosed into the earths realm, legally, from God, through Jesus, according to God’s promise in the Old Testament, set the stage for this communication between God and mankind, through the Holy Spirit .Heb 10:14-24, He was sent of God the Father, John 1:33, to Jesus, God the Son, John 1:34,36, to empower believers to believe all that God has written, through chosen men, to mankind, by the guidance of the Holy Spirit into all of God’s word, which is his truth. John 17:17. Acts 1:8. This set the stage for the gospel being preached, and God being able to send the Holy Spirit of truth to enlighten mankind with his words of truth. John 6:63. I John 2:27, 20. Jesus preached John 7:38, “He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (39) (But this he spoke of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the HOLY GHOST was NOT YET given, (why?) BECAUSE Jesus was not yet glorified.)” Jesus had not yet paid for the sins of the whole world for all eternity future, and sat down at God’s right hand, after God exalted him with the name that is above every name. Eph 1:21. I said all that to show the workings of God, for the benefit of mankind, and the destruction of the devil and his works I John 3:8. What has always been the works of the devil? John 10:10. Separating mankind from God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, starting with the garden of Eden, in any way he can, keeping them in a state of ignoring God, rejecting God, or refusing to believe that God exists! Baptism: Ask yourself, is there a difference between natural water baptism and supernatural baptism with the Holy Spirit? Is natural water different from the supernatural Holy Spirit? John stated there is definitely a difference. John 1:26, 31, Luke 7:29, Acts 1:5. John was baptizing with water unto repentance (toward God, for sins committed against God, themselves and others). Jesus said, “For John truely baptized with WATER, but you shall be baptized WITH THE HOLY GHOST....” Jesus himself told us there is a difference between baptism with water and baptism with the Holy Ghost.. Acts 1:5 “The baptism of the supernatural Holy Spirit was for power from God to witness of God’s truth all over the world. Acts 1:8. The natural water baptism was for the repentance of sins.” Is the Holy Spirit the instrument used of God to put us into the body of Christ, called the church? I Cor 12:13, Eph 1:22-23..most definitely. Here it is helpful to recognize another fact. In the Old Testament, from God’s viewpoint, there were only two classes of people. Jew and Gentile (Gentiles were also known as the nations.) When Jesus came, in the New Testament, he came to create another class of people, called the church, from God’s viewpoint. Hi Iktoose, Aug 4, 2005..rest of the answer Ask yourself, if Jew and Gentile were the whole of all mankind, where is God going to get this third class of people called the church? The obvious answer is, from the whole pool of people, the Jews and the Gentiles. I Cor 10:12, Eph 2:13-16. Back to Baptism: Again who was going to baptize mankind to be witnesses of God to all the world? John 1:33-36 God had told John that Jesus was sent to baptize with the Holy Spirit! Acts 1:8 said this baptism from Jesus, sent from God the Father, was power from God, through the Holy Ghost, to be witnesses to God the Father, and this baptism was NOT done by any man, it was done by the Lord Jesus Christ himself. Jesus is the baptizer with the Holy Ghost. John 1:33. There is a definite difference in water baptism done by a minister, a human being, and Jesus, the Son of God, baptizing a person with the Holy Spirit. Thus the story of Matt 7:9 by Jesus himself...”What man is there of you, whom if his SON ask bread, will he give him a stone? (10) Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? (11) If you then, being evil (unjust, merciless, prideful, disobedient Micah 6:8 the opposite of good) know how to give GOOD (just, merciful, humble, obedient Micah 6:8) gifts unto your children, HOW MUCH MORE shall your Father in heaven give good things to them that ASK him?” Do you suppose Jesus baptizing a person with the Holy Spirit is a good gift from his Father God to mankind? Yes, there is a two fold baptism, outlined in these scriptures, for two different purposes, In the examples given and in the original question. You see, in Acts 8:12, the baptism of repentance first spoken of by John the Baptist. In Acts 8:14-17 you see Jesus, through Peter and John, baptizing them with the Holy Spirit and power, as God said he would, after he was risen from the dead and seated at God’s own right hand. John 1:33, Acts 1:5. Who is this for? Acts 2:38-39 Peter said..repent, and be baptized in the name (or into the name) of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the GIFT of the Holy Ghost. (39) For the promise (of the Holy Ghost baptism by Jesus) is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Always in Christ, C.S.M. |
