1 | Receive Spirit with salvation or later? | Acts 2:38 | rdupont | 21794
In Lu. 11:13 Jesus says that the Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Does this mean that we must ask to receive the Spirit? How does this compare with Jo. 3:15 where "whosoever believes...has everlasting life"?

Response................................. The Holy Spirit is given when we believe (Eph 1:13-14). The confusion comes because Jesus was speaking at a time when the Holy Spirit did not automatically come to the righteous. Steve |

Hi rdupont, Welcome to the forum. Hello also srbaegon, for I clicked on your response by mistake. I believe that the two references compare very well. First, may I say that the "whoever believes may in Him have eternal life" refers to the Son of Man. The "that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life" is talking about the only begotten Son of God. When one talks of the capital s Son of God you are recognizing that God is Spirit. When you believe that God came as a Man, even the Son of Man who was lifted up for you, then you have eternal life and are not judged. Compare verses15 and 18. When you receive Jesus into your heart as a believer, you are receiving the Holy Spirit. In comparing Luke 11:13 with the passage in John, I would compare it with John 3:16. In that comparison you can see the words "give" and "gave". Luke 11:13, "...how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. John 3:16, '' ...that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him..." Personally, for this verse I think of Jesus as the Holy Spirit. I believe that is why the other reference, Eph 1:12-14 is important, that is, "to the praise of His glory." We believed in Him, we "were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise...God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." I think that it is important to learn from Ephesians that not only is there a Holy Spirit but there is also a filling possible when we ask for "a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the [true] knowledge of Him, ..." As far as asking for things, I believe that God is always willing to grant requests when we seek first His kingdom. Compare your Luke 11:13, "how much more will your heavenly Father give..." Luke 12:24, "...and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds." But, again, I think that these spiritual things come to us when we seek His kingdom. Compare Luke 11:2,3 with Luke 12:31. |
