1 | Teaching Bible Prophecy | Acts 1:7 | BradK | 185825
Hello gkidder, Allow me to comment on one aspect of your question. The Prince of Preachers, C.H. Spurgeon addressed this matter in his sermon on Acts 1:6-8, titled "Witnessing Better than Knowing the Future" (2330) I quote in part: "First, then, let us consider SOME THINGS WHICH ARE NOT FOR US. It is not for us to know the times and the seasons, and to be able to make a map of the future. There are some great events of the future very clearly revealed. The prophecy is not at all indistinct about the facts that will occur; but as to when they will occur, we have no data. Some think that they have; but our Lord here seems to say that we do not know the times and the seasons, and that it is not for us to know them. I pass no censure upon brethren who think that, by elaborate calculations, they find out what is to be in the future; I say that I pass no censure, but time has passed censure of the strongest kind upon all their predecessors. I forget how many miles of books interpreting prophecy there are in the British Museum; but I believe it amounts to miles, all of which have been disproved by the lapse of time. Some of the writers were wonderfully definite; they knew within half-an-hour when the Lord would come. Some of them were very distinct about all the events; they had mapped them all within a few years. The men who wrote the books, happily for themselves, had mostly died before the time appointed came. It is always wise to pitch on a long period of prophecy, that you may be out of the way if the thing does not come off; and they mostly did so. There were very few of them who lived to suffer the disappointment which would certainly have come to them through having fixed the wrong date. I let time censure their mistake. God forgave it, for they did it with a desire for his glory. The bulk of them were most sincere students of the Word, and herein are a lesson to us, even though they were mistaken in their calculations; but, beloved, it is not for you to know the times and the seasons." Certainly, there are many who seek prophecy because it is interesting and even sensational! What does prophecy reveal to us about the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ? Remember, "Jeusus is the spirit of prophecy" (Rev. 19:10) Paul aptly warned that, "All seek their own, not the things of Christ" (Phil. 3:21). Without trying to "throw the baby out with the bath water" we should excercise a balanced approach to this topic. I for one am not overly enthralled by John Haggee- even though he si probably the better of the TBN flock. I wouldn't endorse his DVD's for that reason. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

2 | Teaching Bible Prophecy | Acts 1:7 | gkidder | 185829
When we look at scriptures, such as Rev. 1:3 and 1:19 and 3:3 and Rev. 1:7 Rev.11:3, 7-10 Dan. 12:4 Rev.22:12 etc, etc, etc, these are all bible scriptures; all are the inspired word of God are they not? So why are they ignored in the church and by Christians. Why is it not being taught? I’m not asking any one to set a date; I just want prophecy to be used as a teaching tool just like any other book of the bible is used. Of course I’m referring to Revelation and Daniel and a multitude of other scriptures that refers to prophecy.

Hello gkidder, Of course those verses are inspired scripture! Obviously, there is also much more to the Bible than merely prophecy. The grand subject of scripture is of course Christ. Do you see this ignorance as a wide-spead problem? If so how? Could you possibly elaborate on why you view this as such? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

I think we need to back up a bit here, when I first brought up the subject of prophecy it was to ask a simple question as to why prophecy is not being preached behind the pulpit of the church. My frustration is that every thing else is being taught, but not end time prophecy. Not the book of revelation, the Christ of the book of Mathew is a lot different than the Christ of Revelation. In the book of Mathew he is riding a Donkey, in Revelation he is riding a white horse, and that is just one of many examples that I feel need to be preached. We teach about God razing Christ from the dead and ascending to heaven, but we don’t teach about the Rapture of the church and when the dead in Christ shell rise in a twinkling of an eye. Get my point brothers? I just want the Bible evenly taught.

You really speak to where I am at in my Bible study right now. I am just completing a year-long in-depth study of Matthew, and will be starting an in-depth study of Revelation in a couple of weeks. This is what is currently impressing me the most is just what you said, Jesus on a donkey in Matthew, and on a white horse in Revelation. The risen Jesus of Matthew 28, the glorified Jesus of Revelation 1. The Saviour in Matthew, the Judge in Revelation. And of course, soooo much more!!! Comparing and contrasting Matthew and Revelation is amazing! It's totally exciting! It should be taught! People think of Revelation as a mysterious book of future prophecy that no one can really understand anyway, but the simple fact is, while it does contain some of that, what this book called Revelation is, is a "revelation of JESUS CHRIST, which God gave Him to show His slaves. . ." We can add so much to our understanding of Jesus by looking at these books. This is one of the many reasons I love my church so much, is that we simply go through the Bible, book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, teaching all that is in there. Not following some "theological system" as some have said, simply teaching the Word of God, in its entirety. Its all given for our edification, to build us up in the most holy faith. We need to know all of it. So I'm with you, brother! Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Mark, I am sure you have realised that bible prophecy can be a real eye opener, with all the different teachings that there are, and the fact that what the bible teaches, there can only be one way. That is why we are advised to try the spirits to see if they are of God, as there are many false prophets around (1 John 4:1) M.Royal |

I never took the time earlier to thank you hank for your note. So far yours has been a positive one and even Mark thank you for your support. I feel that the ignorance is with not preaching the entire gospel. An in-balance, as you said people may be complete and thoroughly equipped. To zero in on any one subject -- be it eschatology, baptism, election or anything else -- and make it one's focus to the exclusion of everything else, does not make the man of God complete and thoroughly equipped; it makes him lop-sided, leading him to place a skewed emphasis upon his pet topic far beyond what the Bible places on it. This not infrequently leads him, if not to omit other vital topics entirely, to fail to give them the same emphasis which Scripture does. ..... The Bible is complete and must be read, studied and taught in its completeness. Amen brother Tony I rest my case. There is a scripture that I’m having trouble finding. It say’s something along the line that people will be willingly ignorant of the truth. Perhaps some one is familiar with this; it pretty well sums up what I was referring to. |
