With regard to John the Baptist (Elijah) and the Messiah, please read all of Isaiah 40, however in the gospels of Mark and John the key verse which is highlighted is Isaiah 40:3. Jesus did not come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them. Jesus is our Righteousness. Isaiah 7:14: Immanuel - God with us. He is with us. He does lead us in the paths of righeousness for His Name's sake (Psalm 23). We cannot hope to make ourselves righteous. I support above this answer with John 9:41 because it is a rebuke of the Pharisees, which you are seeing in the gospel of Matthew. We, as the His body, need to be constantly on guard that the leaven of the Pharisees is not part of our preaching as well. We do not want to follow in their footsteps. For the "what not to do's" of the faith, see all of Matthew 23. The contemporary church is guilty of these sins as well. There is nothing new under the sun. In Matthew 23: 37-30 we can hear God's heart breaking for His people. But, blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Consider the following - Poverty, Humility, Chastity, Love. Begin with Poverty. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter says of the apostles - We have left everything to follow you. Remember the parable of the poor beggar Lazarus, who is taken up to Heaven and resides in the comfort of the bosom of Abraham. Pray to God to show you how you are impoverished. Next - Humility "All our righteousness is as filthy rags". "There is none who does good, not one". "He humbled Himself to death, even death on a cross". "Learn of Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls". Next - Chastity - "All sins a man commits outside his body, but the sexual sin a man commits against his own body". Marriage is a holy union, and a type of the Marriage Feast of the Bridegroom (Jesus) and the Bride. Jesus said, if a man even looks at a woman with lust in his heart, he has already committed adultery with her. Finally - Love. Love is the central teaching of our faith. Divine Love gave us Jesus the baby in the manger, Jesus the sacrificial Lamb on the cross, and Jesus, the Victorious One, who sat down at the right hand of God the Father the Almighty having ascended into Heaven. Here is our righteousness. There is no other. Take hold of it by faith. He will work the rest. |
