1 | John 9:31 is it a true spiritual fact. | John 9:31 | sojoro | 94000
Is this statement: We know that God does not hear sinners, a true spiritually fact since it was not said by God or Jesus but by the man who was made to see.
2 | John 9:31 is it a true spiritual fact. | John 9:31 | EdB | 94001
Sojoro While all scripture is inspired, when the author of one of the books is quoting Satan or someone else the account is inspired not always the content of the quoted words. For instance when Job’s “comforters” were quoted in the Book of Job they are not speaking God’s words but their own. We see this later in Job as God’s judgement is wrought upon them. Therefore we have to be careful to understand who is saying what and under what inspiration. Another example of this is in Acts 5:33-40 where Gamaliel is offering advice on how to deal with the Apostles. He said if it is of God it will succeed and if not it will fail, while this was good advice not to mess with the Apostles, it was not an inspired standard to judge if a ministry is authentic or not. Mormons and Islam would have to be declared of God if it were. John 9:31 is such a case. God does hear the prayers of a sinner, one example is a sinner looking forgiveness. There are examples of sinners prayers being heard and answered in the Bible. Balaam Numbers 22 being the first that comes to mind. I think it can be said that only sinner prayer we can be “sure” the Lord hears is the sinner when he prays for salvation, however God can and sometimes does answer the other prayers of sinners. EdB |

EdB your wisdom concerning Gamaliel’s advice is very enlightening. However, how would you explain John 9:31 “Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” I agree that God must hear the prayer of the sinner when he repents. And I know that “(all things) work together for the good of them that love the Lord.” The repentant sinner has seen the error of his way and has come to repentance for the love of the Lord. I want to agree with you wholeheartedly, but I haven’t gotten past the mote in my eye where John 9:31 is concerned. I am familiar with Balaam’s story as well, and you bring out a very thought provoking point, what some would consider a contradiction, but what you and I know is fact, not contradiction, (whether we understand it or not.) Please help me with this, EdB. For it is a deep and meaty subject. Thanks George |

George I think the man was speaking from Jewish prejudice. The Jews of the time believed if you were born blind your parents were sinners, if something bad happened to you were in sin and if anything good happened you were of God. This is clearly seen in Job and Job’s friends accusing him of unrepented sin. The first part of what he said we know is wrong, God does hear sinners when they pray for salvation. We also know the second part to be correct God hears our prayers. However that does not mean God always answers our prayers the way we think He should. God will make all things work to our good and to His Glory. God is running things not us or our prayers. That all said I believe the man spoke true in the fact he was saying surely Jesus is of God. As he stated up to this point a miracle so great has never been done by anyone except God. I hope this answers your question EdB |

5 | Truth, understandin or Faith in the word | John 9:31 | GeorJoy | 94080
I know what you are saying Ed, but do you not think that the verse could be meant literally, "God heareth not sinners," and as I said earlier that the sinner who is sincerely repentant, and coming to Jesus for salvation is no longer a sinner in the moment prior to salvation, Or that there is another truth of which we are not aware? I'm sure you agree with me when I say that I am leary of those, (myself included) when we tend to label a bible author as "prejudice." For many have said that Paul was a (I couldn't spell this word if my life depended on it, so I will put it phonetically) Sho-vin-ist. If scripture isn't true to the letter, then it is untrue in all..... I will admit that there is a lot therein that I simply do not understand. But I will refrain from calling an apple an orange, if I don't know the particular variety of apples in question. George |

George Concerning John 9:31 which the question revolved around I found a couple of interesting cross reference verses. Compare the following OT verses with the NT verse 9:31. Wouldn't you agree that these OT verses possibly help us better understand what was said in John 9:31: John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: Jer. 5:25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear Prov. 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous. Micah 3:4 Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings Grace be to you New Creature |
