Greetings Mark4wh, You asked, "Why is the phrase "for many are called but few are chosen" left out of the nasb translation on this verse??" Matthew 20:16 "So the last shall be first, and the first last." (NASB) Matthew 20:16 "So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen." (KJV) The textual notes to several translations shed some light here: * "Some manuscripts do not contain this phrase." (Amplified Bible) * "Other ancient authorities add for many are called but few are chosen" (NRSV) * "NU omits the rest of v. 16" (NKJV) The textual criticism reveals that the words "for many are called but few are chosen" are only found in the later Majority Text family of Greek manuscripts and the Textus Receptus, and largely seen as a scribal addition, probably from Matthew 22:14. The Alexandrian textual family, which is considered to be a more 'critical text' since it contains earlier Greek manuscripts, does not include the longer version of Matthew 20:16. The KJV and the NKJV are based upon the Majority Text and Textus Receptus traditions of Greek manuscripts (which contain the longer version of Matt. 20:16). The NASB and most of the more recent translations on the market today are based on the more critical, or Alexandrian textual tradition (which includes the shorter version). Therefore, the KJV and NKJV readings are different from the NASB, RSV and ESV readings of this verse. Blessings to you, Makarios |
