Molech was a pagan god to whom child sacrifices were made. Children were dedicated and burned to Molech at the Tophet in the Valley of Hinnon near Jerusalem. This practice is specifically mentioned in 4 passages in the OT; Lev 18:21; 20:2-5; 2 Kings 23:10; Jer 32:35. Some scholars have suggested that the term "passing over" children to Molech and "burning in fire" indicate a dedication of the children to the god's service rather than the actual sacrifice. Jer. 19:5 calls such offerings "burnt offerings" and Ez 23:37-39 calls the act slaughter and says the children were given to the god as food. The worship may of been of Phoenician origin. Deuteronomy explains it as the custom of the indigenous population of Caanan. The Isrealites practiced this type of worship about 160 years beginning in 735 BC. Josiah's reforms attempted but did not totally eradicate it. (Harpers Bible Dictionary). prayon |
