Greetings Nichelle, In Leviticus 10:1, Nadab and Abihu "offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them." Here is a bit of commentary on this verse.. "10:1 strange fire. On the first day of service, Nadab and Abihu apparently used coals of fire that were not taken from the bronze altar as prescribed (see 6:12-13; 16:12). It seems, too, that they offered incense other than at the morning or evening sacrifice (cf. Ex. 30:7-8). Some feel that they were drunk because a prohibition against drinking immediately follows their punishment (v.9)." (1) "10:2 died before the LORD. Aaron's older sons are mentioned also in Exodus 6:23; 24:1,9; 28:1; Numbers 3:2-4; 26:60-61; 1 Chr. 6:3; 24:1-2. They are regularly remembered as having died before the Lord and as having had no sons. Their death was tragic and at first seems harsh, but no more so than that of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11). In both cases a new era was being inaugurated (cf. also the judgment on Achan, Josh 7, and on Uzzah, 2 Sam. 6:1-7). The new community had to be made aware that it existed for God, not vice versa." (2) "10:1 ... profane fire. Though the exact infraction is not detailed, in some way they violated the prescription for offering incense (cf. Ex. 30:9,34-38), probably because they were drunk (see vv. 8,9). Instead of taking the incense fire from the brazen altar, they had some other source for the fire and thus perpetrated an act, which, considering the descent of the miraculous fire they had just seen and their solemn duty to do as God told them, betrayed carelessness, irreverence, and lack of consideration for God. Such a tendency had to be punished for all priests to see as a warning." (3) I hope that these help!
