1 | Are women allowed to speak/preach? | Joel 2:28 | IMawesome0514 | 105179 | ||
Hey, a couple of nights ago I was reading in 1 Corinthians and I stumbled upon 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and it speaks about women not being able to speak in church and such. I've also read another verse that says that women cannot preach...I'm just not sure what to think. Everybody I've asked so far hasn't given me an answer that is logical, so can anyone perhaps try to explain this to me? I'd really appreciate it:):) God Bless, Alyshia |

Alyshia, I have had my own questions on that verse in the past. I think what you must do is go back to the history of the Corinthian church and the society it was in (context). Also find a good Bible commentary book(s) to help you out from time to time. Women were looked down upon as second class citizens. However, as Christians all are equal (Gal 3:28). Now women and men sat apart in those days and a woman with this new found freedom was prone to expressing it - which is also noted in that a woman is to cover her head. Greeks didn't cover their heads to worship and prostitutes were known for uncovered heads in Corinth. We are commanded to do things with order (in Corinthians) and to respect God's hierarchy (v 11:3). Therefore women were not to shout out to their husbands in church and break order. This goes against the beauty of a woman which is a "gentle and quiet spirit...of great worth in God's sight" 1Peter 3:4 That doesn't refer to teaching/preaching. On a more carnal note, a woman must be careful when teaching a man. Since you are not a man, I must tell you that we are very visual and all men are prone to lustful thoughts. Simply put, be considerate of this if you are going to teach/preach. If your male listeners are good Christian men you might find them all getting up and leaving in order to "flee from adultry" during the middle of your lesson. Hope this helps. |
