Greetings John R., Daniel 1:5, Acts 7:22, and Acts 22:3 are a few verses of Scripture that speak of 'secular' education, in the sense that Daniel, Moses and Paul were all given education regarding the setting (place and time) that they were placed in. But what separated these three men from what their secular education could not begin to reveal to them is that they were led to do what they did by instruction of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26) who is the ultimate Teacher. Those who are believing parents must take part in training their children in righteousness and in the way of the Lord as was Timothy (2 Tim. 1:5; 3:15) and Daniel (Dan. 1:8). "Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) 2 Chronicles 17:7-9 gives us a Biblical example of teaching that was administered with a spiritual basis. "But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king's choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself." Knowledge gives strength (Pro. 24:5-6), and would cause arrogance (1 Cor. 8:1) if those who are taught are misled by incorrect knowledge (Isaiah 47:10) and became prideful (Acts 17:16-34). But what we have come to understand is that faith is the ultimate intelligence (1 Cor. 3:18-23), causing even children to confound the minds of those who are wise in the law (Luke 2:46-47). Therefore, my conclusion is that while children can gain much intellectually and socially by learning in a public school environment, they should also be trained in spiritual things at home and at church, so that they will know at a young age to discern what is good and right, leading them on a path of righteousness, all the days of their life. This world be so blessed to have many young "Daniels", who 'make up their mind' not to obey a secular teaching that is contrary to the Word, but to stand up for the Lord and His holy Word! Blessings to you, Makarios |
