Prayer Warrior, without getting technical or detailed about this issue of the security of the believer (about which many, many posts have already spoken), let's consider this salient point, if we may: If Christ indeed is able to save us in spite of our sins, He is also able to keep us for all eternity, in spite of our sins. When we insist that our "walking" with Him and our incessant repenting of our sins is essential to maintaining our salvation, we are putting ourselves in the equation and this we can never do because we have no more power to keep ourselves saved than we have of saving ourselves to begin with. You see, when we say that we must repent of our every sin or lose our salvation, we are in effect placing the power of salvation upon ourselves, upon our repentence, making it part of the salvation process. This is distinctly not what the Bible teaches. We are saved by (God's) grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation comes not from ourselves, not from anything that we can ever do, but from God, and God who is able to save us is equally able to keep us. Our repentence for our sins, therefore, should spring from the grateful heart of the regenerate believer whose desire is to remain in close fellowship and communion with the God who loves and saves him. Hank: You write: "If Christ indeed is able to save us in spite of our sins, He is also able to keep us for all eternity, in spite of our sins." When I was reading your posting, Romans 5:8-10 came to mind. I offer this passage in support of the above point that you made. Romans 5:8-10 GOD'S WORD Translation Christ died for us while we were still sinners. This demonstrates God's love for us. Since Christ's blood has now given us God's approval, we are even more certain that Christ will save us from God's anger. If the death of his Son restored our relationship with God while we were still his enemies, we are even more certain that, because of this restored relationship, the life of his Son will save us. HOLMAN CHRISTIAN STANDARD BIBLE But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us! Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! TODAY'S ENGLISH VERSION But God has shown us how much he loves us—it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! By his blood we are now put right with God; how much more, then, will we be saved by him from God's anger! We were God's enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son. Now that we are God's friends, how much more will we be saved by Christ's life! kalos |
