1 | What is important about the age"twenty" | Ex 30:14 | Makarios | 15108
Greetings Kelkat! The number twenty, '20' is found many times in the Bible! Jacob stayed in Laban's house for 20 years (Gen. 31:38,41), Jacob presented Esau with 20 goats and rams (Gen. 32:14-15), Joseph was sold to the Midianite traders for 20 pieces of silver (Gen. 37:28). Twenty was a recurring figure in configuring the geometry of religious objects in the tabernacle (Ex. 26:2,18-20; 27:10-11,16, etc, etc..). As for twenty (20) years of age, here are specific passages dealing with that.. Exodus 30:14 "Every one that passeth over unto them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of Jehovah." (ASV) Exodus 38:26 "a beka a head, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed over to them that were numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men." (ASV) The age of twenty is also discussed in Lev. 27:3,5 and in Numbers 1:3,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,32,34,36,38,40,42,45, 8:24, 14:29, 26:2,4, and 32:11. The Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary states that this was the 'age of maturity', "Those of mature age, between twenty and sixty, being capable of the greatest service, were rated highest; young people, from five till twenty, less, because not so serviceable; infants, though devotable by their parents before birth (1Sa_1:11), could not be offered nor redeemed till a month after birth; old people were valued below the young, but above children; and the poor--in no case freed from payment, in order to prevent the rash formation of vows--were rated according to their means." "This section forms what seems to be God’s second response to the prayer of Moses (vv. 13–19). This second response contains some new elements. First, the little ones would be the only survivors of the wilderness wanderings. All over the age of twenty would die in the wilderness over the period of the next forty years." (The Nelson NKJV Study Bible) In conclusion, those who were under twenty were considered as 'little ones' and not as yet mature enough to be able to go to war for Israel or be counted in the census. The age of 'maturity' was 20 years old. --Nolan |

2 | The age of maturity? | Ex 30:14 | Kelkat | 15241
Okay...I figured it was the "age of maturity," but why did, and some cultures still do, people marry before then?
3 | The age of maturity? | Ex 30:14 | Makarios | 15265
Good question, Kelkat! Perhaps the other cultures that you speak of do not have many things, besides this 'age of maturity'.. If they do not have the Lord God as their only source of worship and strength, then this would go a long way into explaining why they do not have rules or a 'social rule' that prohibits marriage until a certain 'maturity' has been reached in the specific individuals involved. --Nolan |
