Greetings, ptj! Forum member Prayon asked a similar question some time ago, and here are some of the responses that were written.. "Because this was the place where GOD was to be with man, and the only way for us there is mercy (Romans 11:32)." (Written by Paulfromnys) ________________________ "Here's a little commentary on the "mercy seat".. "25:17 a mercy seat. Lit., a covering. It was not only the lid for the ark, but also the place where sins were covered, thus the place of propitiation." [Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible] "25:17 mercy. Or "atonement." It speaks of reconciliation, the divine act of grace whereby God draws to Himself and makes "at one" with Him those who were once alienated from Him. In the OT, the shed blood of sacrificial offerings effected atonement (see Lev. 17:11 and note); in the NT, the blood of Jesus, shed once for all time, does the same (see Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2). mercy seat. Or "atonement cover" (see note on Lev. 16:2). That God's symbolic throne was capped with an atonement cover signified His great mercy toward His people- only such a God can be revered (see Ps. 130:3-4)." [Zondervan NASB Study Bible]" (Written by Makarios) _______________________ "Scripture ... Exo 25:17-22 ... Prayon, Here is what the Bible says Exo 25:17 "You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. -18 "You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. -19 "Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends. -20 "The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat. -21 "You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony which I will give to you. -22 "There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel. But I'll just give you the biblical data. The literal meaning in both the OT and NT (Heb 9:5) is propitiatory. Propitiation most often refers to appeasing the anger of a deity. Only the High Priest saw the mercy seat, and only once a year, and only with the blood of the propitiatory sacrifice. Lev 16:2 The LORD said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter at any time into the holy place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, or he will die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. 18 Lev 16:13 "He shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the ark of the testimony, otherwise he will die. 19 Lev 16:14 "Moreover, he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. 20 Lev 16:15 "Then he shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. As so many things about the OT temple worship teaches us about the person and work of Christ, so it is true here. 1 John 4:10 says, "In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." Heb 9:11,12 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. So, Christ is the propitiation, that which appeases the wrath of God; he is the propitiator (High Priest), the one who offers the propitiation; and He is the propitiatory, the only place where we can find mercy from God. Heb 4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Written by Lionstrong) I hope one or more of these help! - Makarios |
