Greetings Robertie10, Perhaps righteousness can be defined by Psalm 1:1-3: "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers." (NASB) The words "righteous" and "just" are used to translate the Hebrew word 'yashar' with the idea that one is called righteous because he is 'right with God.' In the Old Testament, this meant that he had observed "all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord" (Luke 1:6; compare Romans 10:5; Phil. 3:6), but does not mean that the man is sinless (Eccl. 7:20). The righteous person trusted in the coming Messiah (Luke 2:25) and offered the required sacrifice (Lev. 4:27-35). Compare with righteousness in the New Testament: Romans 10:3,10; Phil. 3:4-9 and the following references: righteousness of God in Christ: Is. 54:17; Jer. 23:6, 33:16; Hos. 2:19; Mal. 4:2; Rom. 1:17, 3:22, 10:3; 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 3:9; Titus 2:14; 2 Peter 1:1 Blessings to you, Makarios |
