Not so Doc. Following Christs examples, Words, teachings and reasoning it is sound to believe that there is power in prayer...and fasting. Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Eph 6:18-20 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and PETITION 1162 deêsis; from 1189a; a need, entreaty:--entreaties(2), petition(3), prayer(6), prayers(6), supplication(1). for all the saints, and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. God doesn't relate prayer to a pretty flower we pick, It is related as a powerful form of weaponry, armour, incense, petition along with the Word and the other forms of Godly armour. I'm not sure why you came up with those verses, that is referred to in psychology also as "magical thinking". As some of Christs followers made the mistake of trying to buy this power, it was condemned. Christianity isn't about making signs in the air nor is anything you mentioned. Neither is killing rams or bulls as sacrifices. Particularily what false presuppositions are you relating to? I don't see I have presupposed anything but in sharing ideas based on Gods Word. Maybe I won't get any biblically sound answers from you, but perhaps someone else has some ideas they want to share. I'm sure there is much much more to the bible then what you came up with. But thank you for your best shot at it. |

Hi, bandaid... The commands of Ephesians 6 arise out the doctrine as expressed in the first three chapters of the epistle. If you look closely, you'll not see anything there that states that prayer and fasting operate like talismans. God's power is manifest in the outworking of His eternal purpose (Ephesians 1:19-23). Making dead men alive (v2:1), God is accomplishing His preordained work (vv1:4, 2:10). Note that it doesn't say anything about doing all these things because we pray or fast. You've built a causal connection based on an improper exegesis of two passages recounting the same incident (Matthew 17:21; Mark 9:29). This is one of your erroneous presuppositions... probably based in some sort of Word of Faith teaching somewhere. Always remember that every word is expressed in the context of a sentence, every sentence in the context of a passage, and every passage in the context of a book. Ephesians is a particularly easy example of this. There are some 32 imperative statements in the book. All of them are in the last three chapters! If you don't get a handle on the theology as expressed in all the indicatives of the first three chapters, you'll simply generate incorrect theology. It is a common trap people fall into these days. Prayer and fasting don't manipulate God. Rather, they are expressions of faith, love, and dependence in God by those whom He has saved. By the way, I think that your particular issue may be better served by passages like 1 Peter 3:1-6 and Titus 2:3-5. As you pursue sanctification -- giving rise to a godly character that expresses devotion to the the Lord in prayer and fasting -- God will use your current circumstances to conform you to the image of His Son (Hebrews 12:1-11). This is where you can exercise that free will you keep mentioning. Discipline yourself to work in the direction of what God has already accomplished. Who knows, but that our Lord will work out His will for your husband, as you "lead the life that the Lord has assigned to you, and to which God has called you" (1 Corinthians 7:17). We can only offer up what the Lord has taught us. Unfortunately we can't offer quick and easy solutions. Understanding the Word takes sweat. However, as has already been mentioned, we can and will be praying that God will be greatly glorified in and through these difficult circumstances. Perhaps you will be kind enough to be in prayer for the struggles -- revealed or not -- with which the rest of us are dealing. In Him, Doc |

Hello Doc, I'm addressing this note to you because I am in total agreement with your statement, "Prayer and fasting don't manipulate God. Rather, they are expressions of faith, love, and dependence in God by those whom He has saved." The times that I have fasted were generally aimed at seeking His will in a particular area of my life or just periods of time set aside for a spiritual refreshing to draw closer to Him. I only wish I could say that those fasts were more frequent on my part. I believe the situation causing confusion for bandaid is the wording of Matt. 17:21 and Mark 9:29. Both instances state that "this kind" can only come out by prayer AND fasting IF one is reading a translation of the Bible such as the KJV or the NKJV. There are other less known versions that also use this wording. A majority of the translations such as the NASB, NLT and the NIV translate the verse as saying that this kind cannot come out by anything other than prayer which changes the meaning considerably. The first translation indicates that prayer and fasting work hand in hand to the casting out. The second translation indicates that prayer alone is sufficient. I do know that Jesus fasted and as such set an example for us. I tend to avoid discussions regarding which version of the Bible should be used as I know from experience that the truth is there for all who genuinely seek it. After all, my Lord used the Douay Version of the Scriptures to capture my heart. This forum continues to bless me daily. God bless and keep you, budderfligh |

NASB Matt 17:15 "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. Matt 17:16 "I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him." Matt 17:17 And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me." Matt 17:18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once. Matt 17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not drive it out?" Matt 17:20 And He *said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Matt 17:21 ["But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."] Mark 9:17 And one of the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute; Mark 9:18 and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it." Mark 9:19 And He *answered them and *said, "O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!" Mark 9:20 They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. Mark 9:21 And He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood. Mark 9:22 "It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!" Mark 9:23 And Jesus said to him, "'If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes." Mark 9:24 Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief." Mark 9:25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again." Mark 9:26 After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, "He is dead!" Mark 9:27 But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up. Mark 9:28 When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, "Why could we not drive it out?" Mark 9:29 And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer." The NASB taken from this site and my study bible. The NASB is, my understanding, the closest to the original translation. |
