Thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan NASB 2 Corinthians 12:7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! AMPLIFIED 2 Corinthians 12:7 And to keep me from being puffed up and too much elated by the exceeding greatness (preeminence) of these revelations, there was given me a thorn (a splinter) in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to rack and buffet and harass me, to keep me from being excessively exalted. [Job. 2:6.] 'Paul does not say specifically what his thorn in the flesh was. It was a messenger from Satan, which means that God permitted Satan to do this even as he permitted Job to suffer under Satan. Even though the thorn was not removed, Satan was defeated, because it enabled Paul to experience the surpassing grace and power of God, thereby bringing glory to God' (NRSV Harper Study Bible, Zondervan, 1991). |
