1 | What does lamp and oil symbolize? | Matthew | marlowe | 223237
The oil that was being burned would have been olive oil and the lamps would have been made from clay. I believe the symbolism is of faith contained in earthern vessels; in other words - contained in human beings. Only the finest quality olive oil could be used in lamps - it would have to be refined oil (we commonly call it "virgin oil"!) or it would create smoke. This is the lesson for us - to constantly refine our faith through our study of Gods Word to make it as pure and uncontaminated and as pleasing to God as possible. This will give us the energy to stay prepared for the day of our Lords coming. And the result of our faith? It keeps us awake, alert and ready for our Lord, but it is also a light in a dark world - to show the goodness of God and the wickedness of mankind. |

2 | What does lamp and oil symbolize? | Matthew | BMyers | 223239
Not trying to create a debate, but "virgin oil" is just that, oil that has not been refined. According to the product grade description, "refined olive oil is the olive oil obtained from virgin olive oils by refining methods that do not lead to alterations in the initial glyceridic structure". With that being said, sometimes we look for deeper meaning and miss the actual meaning which is staring us in the face. Brad |

3 | What does lamp and oil symbolize? | Matthew | drbloor | 223240
Brad, Oops! You're 100 percent correct. Someone told me that once and I swallowed it. Thank you for educating me on the glyceridic structure of olive oil! Having said that it would be a shame to ignore scriptural symbolism where it occurs (even if a poor uneducated poster makes an irrelevant mistake with his oil definition!). Certain things in the Bible hold symbolism - light, dark, gold, water, olive oil etc. and it is always an interesting study to see how the meaning of these symbols can help inform our understanding of scripture. The parable can be understood without further investigation as can much of the gospel. As Paul says - (speaking symbolically of course!) there is milk and there is meat. |

Dear drbloor, Are you saying that you have another registration under Marlowe? If so, I would suggest you notify Lockman which name you would stick to so that you won't get both accounts stopped. Shalom Azure P.S. I have the same problem of always forgetting password :-) |
