Greetings Oneness Holy, The author of 1 Chronicles (possibly Ezra), writes with much assumption that the reader already has a good grasp (or has already read) of the account in 2 Samuel regarding David.. The Septuagint translators called 1 Chronicles "the things omitted," indicating that they regarded it as a supplement to Samuel and Kings. Jerome (A.D. 347-420), translator of the Latin Vulgate, suggested that a more appropriate title would be "chronicle of the whole sacred history." However, the author of Chronicles seems to have idealized David and Solomon, since anything that might tarnish his picture of them is omitted. He makes no reference to the seven-year reign in Hebron before the uniting of the kingdom, the wars between Saul's house and David, the negotiations with Abner, the difficulties over David's wife Michal, etc, etc.. David is presented without blemish, except for the incident about the census (1 Chr. 21). Starting with 1 Chronicles 11, we see that 11:10-41 mentions David's mighty men. In the Samuel account, this list is given at the end of David's reign. Moreover, the Chronicler has greatly expanded the list as well (11:41-12:40) compared to the similar account in Samuel. In 12:38-40, the Chronicler's portrait of David is influenced by his Messianic expectations. In 13:1-14, the Chronicler abandons the chronological order given in 2 Sam. 5-6 and puts the transfer of the ark first, delaying his account of the palace building and the Philistines until later (ch. 14). Verses 13:1-4 are not found in Samuel. These are some of the differences between 1 Chronicles and 2 Samuel concerning David.. Blessings to you, Makarios |
