Dear Truecalling: If I may, allow me to amend your phrase "most books have their purposes" to "all books (of Scripture) have their purposes." ..... Here's a capsule of the book of Ruth. It is widely acclaimed as a masterpiece of world literature. Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer, is considered a type of the Christ. Ruth herself is indicative that Gentiles in Old Testament times (she was a Moabite woman) could believe in the true God. Moreover, since Ruth figures in the geneology of Jesus, it shows that Gentile blood was in the line of Him who became the Savior for all mankind. Additionally, this little book is a moving example of the sovereignty of God in caring for His people (2:12). I've read the book many times over and gain new insight with each subsequent reading. I've read many works in my day that the world of letters considers masterpieces, but I've never read any piece of writing more supremely a master work than this lovely book. --Hank

My dear Truecalling: You are indeed very welcome. It always delights my tired old eyes to read that someone is working his way through Scripture. I was bitten by a bug when I was very young that carried the dreaded bookworm virus (for which there is no known cure!), and as a consequence I've read a great deal since I was about six years old -- and I haven't been six years old in 64 years. Unlike Mark Twain who defined a classic as something people wish they had read but haven't, I've actually read a number of them. Still and all, there is no finer literature than the Bible, and that can be explained simply by saying that there is no author nearly so wise as the Author of Scripture. When Sir Walter Scott, the celebrated and prolific Scottish novelist and poet whom we perhaps remember best as the author of "Ivanhoe," lay dying, he asked his son-in-law, John Lockhart, to read to him from the book. Lockhart asked Sir Walter, "Sir, from which of your many books do you wish me to read?" Scott replied, "Son, there is really only one book. Read to me from the Bible." ...... No man or woman could be considered uneducated who applied himself with diligence to a systematic and sustained study of Holy Writ. But of course the Bible is much more than superlative literature. It is the living word of God. I'm so happy that you are reading and studying that blessed old book. May God bless your efforts. --Hank

Dear Hank, Thank you again. With your words I can tell you are very well read. I have enjoyed reading anything that you write to me. I learn from every note you send. I have but another question concerning the Old Testament. I am not known to read the books in the order they are presented in the Holy Bible, I tend to move around from book to book. I am reading the Genesis Again for I have read Genesis many times, I have trouble getting through the all the judges and kings books like numbers, and others. I tend to read the short books while I am reading the others to break up things for me, and I am reading the book of Luke as well. I feel out of touch with the New Testament if I stay in the Old only. I by no means want to come across as one who is singing any praise of my own when I tell you I study about 8 hours aday I have always been a hard studier, I am enrolled in 7 Bible Studies through postal mail from all over. the 8 hours I study are my own personal studies of Gods word. You might would think wow I would be a well read person myself but I am not. I study to know God's word and I study to teach my children what I know. Back to the point my question is, Is it better to read the Old in the order they are in the Bible or moving from books to books is the right thing to do? I do know that some of them seem to tie together but others read as their own book in itself. I have been told that you can read to much of the Bible, but I feel that as long as you are grasping what you are reading theres no such thing as reading to much and getting to know Gods Word. What do you think about this? Thank you for taking your time for your inspiring words, and wisdom you have shared with me. God Bless You..

Hello Truecalling, I have no problem with you studying the Bible 8 hours each day, as long as properly care for your family and acting as the spiritual head by nurturing and directing it properly. Steve |

Dear Steve, Hello I am glad to hear that you don't have a problem with my studies of 8 hours aday, and I can rest assure you my Children get the proper care and attention. They have their own bible study and we do them together on Saturdays. Being that one is 15 and the other is 11 years old they enjoy their study's with me. My main question to Hank was Should we study the Bible in the Order that it is written in or moving around is okay. I know that some of the books seem to tie together but others seem to be a book of their own. Its takes me more time probably then most in my reading, I am a slow reader. But I don't read 8 hours aday for recognition I read to be well read on God's word. Thank you for the Reply, and May God Bless you..

Hi, True... What a wonderful calling you have! God bless you! We always study the Old Testament in the light of the New Testament. I wouldn't suggest a chronological study for anyone that wasn't already well grounded in the revelation of the New Testaments Gospels and epistles. In Him, Doc |
