2 | Moses prepared for his family how? | Exodus | Makarios | 18472
Hello ronscarpet! Moses said goodbye to Jethro (v.18), took his wife and two sons and saddled them on a donkey (v.20), and took the staff of God in his hand (v.20). However, one ESSENTIAL thing that Moses neglected to do was to circumcise his son, and he was almost killed for it! (vv. 24-26) So Moses made all of the provisions except for this one spiritual act that was essential and expected among the Israelites (Gen. 17). If Moses was going to be the one of whom God would deliver the Israelites, then he as well would be bound by this covenant of circumcision, since he himself was an Israelite (Ex. 2:1). It is unclear or unknown as to the reasoning behind the fact that Moses' son was not circumcised up to this point, and the Bible does not tell us exactly why Zipporah had to carry out this act and not Moses himself. Was he unable or unwilling to do it? The text itself does not present any evidence that would lead us to believe that Moses was ill, so the conclusion that I come to here is that this was disobedience on the part of Moses. It is unclear why one son was circumcised and the other was not. Blessings to you, Nolan |

Nolan, my guess is because that Moses was near death and was unable to do it himself. Verse 24 (Exo 4) states that the Lord met him and tried to kill him. Also it could be that Moses did not circumcise his son because Zipporah was against it. However, this could not fit either since the Medianites belonged to the same Abrahamic stock as Isreal, having descended from Abraham's second wife, Keturah. One would assume that they had retained some of the knowledge of the Words of God from Abraham.
