Hi KDC, Scripture doesn't say. The prayer of Jabez is one of the briefest Bible biographies. All we know about Jabez is contained in the 2 verses of the prayer. It would be pure speculation on any name change. I hope this helps, BradK |

Brad, it is interesting to note that the person named Jabez was virtually unknown even among believers who read their Bibles religiously (pun intended) until Bruce Wilkinson came out with his smash hit, "The Prayer of Jabez." In some sense at least, Wilkinson did for Jabez what Boswell did for Johnson. Though there will be some who may disagree with me (it's happened before!), I think Wilkinson's time would have been better utilized had he spent it on the prayer that a far greater Person than Jabez taught His disciples to pray. Compare and contrast Jabez's prayer (1 Chron. 4:10) with what is popularly known as the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13). Can there be any doubt about which is the greater prayer? .... Some time ago I visited a large bookstore and sampled, as is my custom, what was being offered in their "religious books" section. I was amazed to find a whole wall of books devoted to displaying what one might choose to call "Jabez-mania." In addition to the original "Prayer of Jabez" (of which the store must have had on display at least 100 copies), there were calendars, devotionals, sequels, and I don't remember what all -- all of them spin-offs of the original little book that was based on a single verse of Scripture about the prayer of a character in the Bible who was nearly as obscure as Meshelemiah of 1 Chron. 26:1. It's hard to find a good biography of Meshelemiah these days :-) --Hank | ||||||
