1 | Earth was without form, and void. | Gen 1:1 | kalos | 6546
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. *without form and void* "Jeremiah 4:23-27 ; Isaiah 24:1 clearly indicate that the earth had undergone a cataclysmic change as the result of divine judgment. The face of the earth bears everywhere the marks of such a catastrophe. There are not wanting intimations which connect it with a previous testing and fall of angels. "See Ezekiel 28:12-15; Isaiah 14:9-14 which certainly go beyond the kings of Tyre and Babylon." Scofield, C.I. "Scofield Reference Notes on Genesis 1". "Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition)". 2 | Earth was without form, and void. | Gen 1:1 | Nicholson | 17724
In Gen. 1: 2 the second verse, we see clearly that the earth existing in a ruined condition. The word "WAS" in this verse is translated from the Hebrew word “hayah” (Strong’s 01961). This can be translated in one of the following forms - was, come to pass, came, has been, were happened, become. Please note the following inferences 1) The EARTH ALONE is mentioned from this verse onwards. 2) God did not start His creative activity from such a ruined condition. The word CREATED, in the first verse means creation OUT OF NOTHING. So it is clear that an unrevealed length of time has elapsed between Gen.1: 1 and Gen.1: 2. This period of time may be a number of ages. 3) In this verse we see that the earth was (became) in a ruined condition, without form, void, in darkness and filled with waters (death). |

I agree with you. In my NIV, Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 go on like this: In the begining, God created the heaven and the earth. Now, the earth was(*) formless and empty. the footnote for was is given as "possibly became". also, when you come to the 2nd verse, it begins with the word "now" after God created heaven and earth. it so probably became void at that particular time. it doesnt make any scriptural sense that God would create something formless and empty. Another important thing i would like to quote is when i was watching TV, i saw Benny Hinn quoting a verse from Jeremiah as when God created man, He commanded him to replenish the earth.(which means refill) which can only mean there was life previously too. unfortunately i dont remeber which verse. so if anyone can find it, it will be very useful. regs, Vkey |

Support, Scripture ............................. Benny Hinn was probably referring to Gen 1:28, which uses the word replenish in the King James Version. I do not personally support his view. I am only giving a scriptural reference for information. It should be noted that it is "fill the earth" in almost all other translations, including NASB, NIV, RSV, NLT, YLT, and even the King James for the 21st Century. |

Actually, i do remember him quoting that verse from Jeremiah and not from Genesis which in my bible (NIV) it is also "fill". but as i said before, i dont remember which one it is which says replenish the earth. |
