1 | Have you spoke in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | rrherzog | 117045
I believe the entire context here Brad was showing that these Corinthians were using the gifts, specifically tongues in an out of order manner. I can't prove this, but I believe that they were possibly even speaking to the congregation their sermons and teachings in tongues. The reason Paul say's that He would rather someone prophesy is because it builds up and edifies the Body of Christ 1 Cor. 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. This is the definition of a new testament prophet. One who edifies, exhorts, and comforts. It appears that these people were speaking in tongues all during their service and no one was getting anything out of it. Can you imagine the whole service in tongues. The only edification the Church would get out of it is if one would interpret. This would then edify the congregation. 1 Cor. 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. Why is prophesy greater than tongues without interpretation? It edifies the Church. So actually Brad I believe I took this scripture in context concerning Paul speaking about the out of order state this Church was in. That is why he later said in the last two verses: 1 Cor. 14:39-40 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. [40] But let all things be done properly and in an orderly manner. So Paul wished that they all spoke in tongues, just not in confusion, and only when recognized. He even gave the instructions on how to do it: 1 Cor. 14:27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and let one interpret; Your Brother In Christ Rick |

I believe you are right in some instances of seeking the gifts with more intensity than we seek God with. However it is my belief in studying the scriptures that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are very important in our seeking God. They can be used for the edification of the Body of Christ and to win the lost. Also I believe according to the scriptures and by my experience, that praying in the Holy Spirit builds us up personally. Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; Remember Pauls say's 1 Cor. 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. When we know what we should pray for, we pray in the understanding. When we know not how to pray, we pray in the Spirit. EdB, I do understand what you mean though. I have seen this happen where people seek the gifts more than the One that gives them. Sometimes I believe just to be noticed. On another note, I think that you misunderstood me when I said God was not a respecter of man. I realize that we have different talents and natural gifts, but I am talking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is true that we don't all operate in all of the gifts, but Paul tells us to desire the gifts. 1 Cor. 12:31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way. This is the last verse in this Chapter in which Paul list all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Also, I don't know where you got your facts concernig the evangelistic efforts of Pentecostals, but I belong to the biggest Church in our area, which is Pentecostal and I know that we are a Church that believes in turning out to win the lost and not a Church that just turns in to ourselves. Maybe we are the exception. And you said I ripped Acts 10:34, but if you read further in verses 44-46 you will see that they also were filled with the Holy Ghost. And it is not you that I am concerned with in showing the validity of the gifts for today because you believe them. It is those that doubt these precious Holy gifts from God that I am concerned with. One thing we really need to remember. We can talk about this all day, but I believe the more excellent way Is Love. Be Blessed Your Brother In Christ Rick |

4 | Have you spoke in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | rrherzog | 116976
Same question can be asked about salvation. How can you be sure that you are saved? Because the Word of God say's you are if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. Same with speaking in tongues. The Word tells us that we can pray in the understanding or we can pray in the spirit. It also say's 1 Cor. 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. So you see we do not always know what we say when we pray. And before we say that tongues is just a foreign language, lets not forget that the scripture say's that no man understands him because he speaks not to man, but to God. So this cannot be speaking in a natural tongue as some would say. What purpose would it do for me to pray to God in another lanquage such as Spanish when I speak in English? Everything we receive from God is by faith, from salvation to tongues to healing. It is all in the Bible, and the same gifts that God gave the apostles of that time He gives to us, or else He would be a respector of man, and He is not. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Remember the Apostle Paul said himself, 1 Cor. 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: God Bless, Your Brother in Christ |
