Steve-- Just curious, what specifically in either book did you find to be "unsound" or "unbiblical?" |

Although you obviously haven't read Dr. Warren's book, you will be astonished to learn that he makes the very point stated in your note in the first chapter and first sentence of his book. In Chapter 1, entitled, "It All Starts With God," the book starts with the provocative sentence, "It's not about you." The next sentence reads, "The purpose of your life is far greater than your OWN personal fulfullment, YOUR peace of mind, or even YOUR happness...If you want to know wy you were placed on this planet, you MUST begin with GOD. You were born BY His purpose and FOR His purpose." [Rick Warren, "The Purpose Driven Life", p. 17]. Rather than simply criticizing something out of hand that you have no knowledge of, it might be worthwhile to simply read the book and form your own conclusion. As to your statement, it doesn't even make sense. Obviously the only way to argue whether something from ANY book is taken out-of-context is to base the comment on that book and ITS context, whatever it is. Your comment seems to say that I am ignoring or minimizing the Bible simply because I said that someone took a sentence of another book out of context. The argument is obvuiously absurd. The writer's comment that he or she was "concerned" because a sentence in Warren's book that "the last thing some Christians need is another Bible study" is the same as saying that Christians don't need Bible studies is taking the sentence out of context--it doesn't matter WHOSE context it is, Warren's or any one else's. In any case, as demonstrated above, Warren's book fully supports your interpretation of the "thesis" of the Bible. Just thought you might like to know. |

angel3--you have taken Warren's statement out of context. In the book he is saying that there are Christians who spend enormous amounts of time going to Bible studies, but little if any time at all actually giving of themselves in ministry and service. For that type of Christian, it is certainly true that the last thing they need is to attend another Bible study at the expense of actually putting into practice all that they are learning while soaking it up. That is what Warren is saying--having gone to his church for over 15 years, he is the LAST person who would say that someone doesn't need to study the Bible. It's always important to keep things in context.

Hi angel3. I have been going to Pastor Rick Warren's church for over 15 years, and yes, the basis for the Purpose Driven materials is strongly Biblical. The book "The Purpose Driven Life" has over 1,000 scripture references. Also, the Purpose Driven Church platform is strongly Biblical, emphasizing the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. "The Purpose Driven Church" is an excellent book also. I have found that some who criticize "The Purpose Driven Life" as being non-biblical, or light on repentance, etc., probably haven't carefully read it. It is strongly Christ-centered, and puts the focus on God and His Word, where it belongs, unlike "self-help" books which emphasize focus on self.
