Hello Dan 1 Cor 9:1-14 and 1 Tim. 5:17-18 indicate monetary compensation should be expected toward those who labor in the Word. On the other hand, Paul would set aside that right by being a tentmaker to meet his needs. It really depends on the situation. Steve |

Hello suescott, Scripture is clear that it's wrong whenever it happens. Eph 5:18 (ESV) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, I'm thankful that you have put that one time behind you and moved on. That was the proper thing to do. Steve |

1367 | Study Bible | 2 Tim 2:15 | srbaegon | 137408
Hello Lissa, The responses you have received are good. However, I would make an argument for not having a study Bible at all. It's more work to study without all the notes, but in the long run I consider it to be more profitable. I don't object to study Bibles; it's just a preference. Steve |

1376 | Is the Bible God's word? | 2 Tim 3:16 | srbaegon | 100780
Hello JMB, Here are the most direct Scriptures I know concerning this. 2 Tim. 3:16 (ESV) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Peter 1:19-21 (ESV) And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, [20] knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. [21] For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Steve |
||||||
1377 | Literal translations like the NASB | 2 Tim 3:16 | srbaegon | 156074
Hello Dalcent, I would say that 'thought-per-thought' translations are not Bibles. They are rather commentaries. Having said that, I would add that literal translations require some laxity in order to translate idioms properly. Steve |

1379 | Paul's writings is it truth? | 2 Tim 3:16 | srbaegon | 174185
Hello brie, The problem is that "The Purpose Driven Life" is not inspired by God. It is inspired by a man's desire and is a response to be used by God. There is a big difference, and that is why your friend is having difficulties. Inspiration means that God was actively involved in the production of the Bible. He superintended its writing and distribution through men. Because it is God's word, it has errors. "The Purpose Driven Life" is written by Rick Warren. God was not actively involved in its production. It has errors because it was produced solely by a man. Every book has errors because they are written solely by men and women. Now understand also that you cannot convince your friend that Paul's letters are true. The Holy Spirit does that. But you can show how even Peter thought Paul's words were Scripture (2 Peter 3:14-16) Steve |

1380 | ALL things? | 2 Tim 3:16 | srbaegon | 194096
Hello miller521, Allow me to give you the apostle Paul's answer: Romans 9:19-24 (ESV) You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?" [20] But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" [21] Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? [22] What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, [23] in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory -- [24] even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? Steve |
