321 | What does the Bible say about suicide? | Ex 20:13 | mark d seyler | 169563
Dear Eli, The Bible says (Ex 20:13) "You shall not murder." so we know of course that suicide, self-murder, is a sin. But nowhere does the Bible say that it is an unforgivable sin. Matt 12:31 "Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven." There is only this one sin that shall not be forgiven, and this is not suicide. Please forgive my asking, are you thinking about committing suicide? If you are, I would like to pray for you, and just share God's love with you. Love in Christ, Mark |

325 | Jesus decneded into hell. | Eph 4:9 | mark d seyler | 169227
Hi Leia, The Bible teaches hell to be in the "heart of the earth". Compare Matt 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 1 Peter 3 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Ephesians 4 8 Therefore it says, "WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN." 9 [But He ascended?] Now what can this, He ascended, mean but that He had previously descended from [the heights of] heaven into [the depths], the lower parts of the earth? Num 16 30 "But if the LORD brings about an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they descend alive into Sheol, then you will understand that these men have spurned the LORD." 31 As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open; 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah with their possessions. 33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. (This reference from Numbers is not just refering to being buried alive, unless you are of the opinion that such a thing had never happened to anyone before. "...an entirely new thing...") So there is no difficulty with Psalm 139. It is saying, it poetic form, The LORD is everywhere I could go, from the top of heaven to the bottom of hell, from the rising sun in the east to the ends of the sea in the west. No matter how far I could travel, the LORD leads me, and is with me. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Leia, There is a side to this that I think we sometimes overlook. People don't always realize what it is that they are doing. I say this in reference to those who would hurt, abuse, or otherwise use us. As Christians, we are called to gentleness, to not return evil for evil, and to even allow ourselves to be taken advantage of. We are even told to give extra than required, and to not always seek to redress wrongs. You ask a great question, Where is the balance? Jesus could have at any moment stopped the beatings, mockings, and execution. The Priests and Pharisees were certainly taking advantage of the fact that He didn't. The were abusing Him with the intent of getting Him out of the way of their lucrative business ripping people off in the temple. They were hurting Him, even killing Him, to retain their power-hold over the people. To the Priests and Pharisees, Jesus' death was a stepping stone to their own riches and power. Jesus let them. And why? 1 Peter 2 21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in his mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; He entrusted Himself to the Father, the Righteous Judge. People don't always know what is really happening. The Priests and Pharisees didn't know: 1 Cor 2 6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; They didn't know what they were actually doing to Jesus. Other people don't know what they are actually doing to us. They think they are hurting us, using us, abusing us, but in reality they are providing the backdrop, the circumstance, that God is using to perfect us, to sanctify us, to teach us how to follow His Word in our daily lives. There is fellow I know who ends his letters in a way that has impressed itself on me permanently: "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." You are in my prayers. Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Leia, Look at what Peter wrote: 1 Pet 3:14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, 1 Pet 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 1 Pet 3:16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 1 Pet 3:17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. This seems to me to directly apply to the situation you described. In as much as you patiently endured the evil done to you, you did the will of God. Paul also wrote: Titus 2:9 Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, Titus 2:10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. No matter how she came to be your boss, no matter how she acted as your boss, your responsibility to her is the same. So again, to the extent that you fulfilled these things, you fulfilled the will of God. 2 Cor 4:17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 2 Cor 4:18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. 333 | How long is the tribulation period? | Rev 11:3 | mark d seyler | 168992
Revelation 11:3 “And I will give to My two witnesses, and they will prophesy a thousand, two hundred and sixty days, dressed in sackcloth.” Revelation 11:7 “And when they complete their witness, the beast coming up out of the abyss will make war with them, and will overcome them, and will kill them.” LITV In Revelation 11 we are told of two witnesses who prophecy for 1260 days. During this time, fire comes from their mouths to devour anyone who would try to hurt them. They can send any plague on the earth anytime they want. When they have finished their testimony, the beast from the bottomless pit (this is the beast that Mystery Babylon rides, with 10 horns which are 10 kings – Rev. 17:8, 12) will kill them. They will lie in the streets of Jerusalem for 3 1/2 days, then come back to life and ascend into heaven. Revelation 13 speaks of the beast from the sea, having 7 heads and 10 horns, and upon his head 10 crowns. This same description is given of the beast that Babylon rides (Rev. 17), which we are told in Rev. 17:8 ascends out of the bottomless pit, which is locked until the fifth trumpet is sounded. Compare this beast with the one described by Daniel in Dan. 7:19-21. Each has 10 horns which are 10 kings. The beast from the sea, in Revelation 13:5-7, is given power to continue for forty-two months, during which time he makes war with the saints and overcomes them. Daniel also gives this prophecy in Daniel 7:25 “and they (the saints) are given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time (a year, 2 years, and half a year).” The standard year around the world until the 3rd century B.C. was 360 days. This was the Babylonian year, as well as the Jewish year. Extensive information is available explaining the reasons for a 360 day year, and when it was changed. The Bible uses a 360 day year in it’s prophetic computations. 1260 days equals 42 months of 30 days each, or 3.5 years of 360 days each. The two witnesses prophesy for 1260 days, until their testimony is done, and then they are overcome by the beast (Rev. 11:7). According to Daniel 7:21-22, the beast, whose 10 horns are 10 kings, prevails over the saints until the Ancient of Days comes, and the kingdom is given to the saints. The duration that the beast overcomes the saints is 3 1/2 years, or 42 months (Dan 7:25, Rev. 13:3-5). Jesus returns to earth to establish His rule, which the saints will share, at the end of the 70th week (Dan. 9:24-27, Rev. 20:4). If the beast overcomes the saints for 3 1/2 years ending at the Second Coming, and the two witnesses prophesy for 3 1/2 years until the beast overcomes them, then they must be prophesying during the first 3 1/2 years. So the two witnesses prophesy during the first half of the Seventieth Week. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

334 | get up from praying | Josh 7:10 | mark d seyler | 168979
Hi Sparklesrena, It sounds like you may be thinking of: Josh 7:10 So the LORD said to Joshua, "Rise up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? Josh 7:11 "Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. Moreover, they have also put them among their own things. Josh 7:12 "Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst. Josh 7:13 "Rise up! Consecrate the people and say, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus the LORD, the God of Israel, has said, "There are things under the ban in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you have removed the things under the ban from your midst." I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

336 | ensaring sin | Heb 12:1 | mark d seyler | 168949
Hi Dolly Beard, The word translated "ensnaring" or "besetting" is "euperistatos", which is a combination of eu 'good', peri 'around', and histemi 'stand'. This is the sin that is good at standing all around you. Here is what the writer is expressing. You are running a race, but if you allow sin, its the same as having the whole football team in your way. Any direction you try to go, you can't run, because of the 300 lb dude blocking you. In application, this is the sin that is your "achilles heel", the one that gets you every time, the one you feel condemnation for everytime you pray, the one you know have to kick if you are going to run your race to win. Look unto Jesus. He began our faith, He will finish our faith. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

337 | Revelation Chapter 1 to 3 | NT general Archive 1 | mark d seyler | 168899
Hi GotJesus2, The key to this book of the Revelation of Jesus is in chapter 1, verse 19: Rev 1:19 "Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things. The 'things John had seen' is the vision of Jesus. The 'things which are' is what comes after what he had seen, i.e. the seven letters to the churches, churches that were existing at the time John wrote. The 'things which will take place after these things' are what comes after the time of the church, beginning in chapter 4 verse 1, "after these things". Many people believe that these seven letters have several 'layers' of meaning, with application to: 1) the specific church named, existing at the time. 2) individual churches through the age. 3) individual believers through the age. These are backed up specifically by the text. "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." Along with that, many have noticed that there are tie-ins with: 1) the history in the Old Testament 2) the kingdom parables of Matthew 13 3) the other "church" epistles 4) the history of the church-age These are not meant to exhaustive, but can be clearly seen. Regarding church history, it is well recognized that all types of churches exist at all of these times, but that the "main movement" of the global church corresponds with each letter in progression. Not everyone agrees with this. I believe that the main purpose of these letters is their application to the church and to the believer. There rest testifies to Who wrote them. Love in Christ, Mark |

338 | IF God KNEW, why make it so? | Rom 7:7 | mark d seyler | 168785
Hi Calmira, All we can say with certainty is that it suited God's purpose to do as He did. Adam was declared "very good", when he was made, but he was not a "stable" creature. He could have rejected sin. The possibility existed that he could sin. After our redemption is completed, we will be "stable", in that we will no longer sin, sin will be a thing of our past. I conjecture that Adam would have been made "stable" after a time, because that would achieve the purpose God is achieving in us. In our lives, He has accomodated the fact of our sin, in giving His life to pay our penalty. If Adam had not sinned, I think that he would have been tranlated into a creature not subject to the temptation of sin. Ephesians 1 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. God chose us to be holy and blameless before Him. Had man remained without sin, God's purpose would be accomplished. But even though man did sin, God will still accomplish His purpose. The the fact of the matter is that God has told us about "what is", and not "what if", so we can only speculate. The bottom line is that God loves us, and He created us to be His children, and that He might, through all the ages to come, show us what a great and wonderful God He is by how good He is to us, well, I can't really say it better than He did: Eph 2 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. I think that God loves us so much that He was determined that we would be His children, even if He had to die to make it happen. Love in Christ, Mark |

339 | why create us as sinful creatures? | Rom 7:7 | mark d seyler | 168771
Hi Calmira, God created Adam and Eve without sin, and without flaw. Genesis 1:31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. This included man. God declared man to be "very good." God included in man the ability to choose, to make choices that would affect his future. Man had responsibility and consequences. Genesis 2 16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." God wanted someone who could "prefer" Him, not just one who would love Him because that was their created nature. God wants people to choose to love Him. But allowing man this choice also meant that man might choose to disobey God, and suffer the consequence of disobedience, spiritual death. So when first Eve, and then Adam, disobeyed God, and ate from the forbidden tree, that is when sin entered humanity. Until that moment, humanity was unaffected by sin. But at that moment, Adam died spiritually, and became flawed. I think that had Adam and Eve not sinned, had they passed a time of proving, that God would have translated them to the heavenly existance, as He did Enoch. But sin, entering in, corrupted Adam and Eve's nature, and so as they had children, they too were born with this corrupt nature, since everything can only reproduce according to what kind it is. Something that does not have spiritual life cannot pass spiritual life to its children. Jesus came to open the door to us to go back to that original plan for us to have sinless fellowship with God. Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. Of course, we know that this was no surprise to God. He knew what Adam was going to do, and He knew what He was going to do, to send His Only Begotten Son, the express image of Himself, into the world as a man, to die for the sins of the world. 1 John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. The ability to choose becomes hollow and false if you remove the consequence of choice. Imagine you offer to me two envelopes, with a pill in each, labeled with what they will do. One would kill me today, and the other would cause me to live forever. If I choose the death pill, and you sneak the life pill in on me anyway, then what was my choice? If I am to have a real choice, then you have to allow the consequence of my choice, no matter what I choose. This is what God did, although, after Adam took the death pill, God said, in effect, "though you chose death, I will die in your place. You can now choose life if you want to." And that extends to each of us. We were born with the flaw Adam incurred, the corruption brought by sin, but we too can now choose, to serve God, and to be redeemed. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, I hope this helps! Let me know if you still have a question. Love in Christ, Mark |
