261 | Justified by faith or His faithfullness? | Gal 2:16 | mark d seyler | 174656
Hi MJH, Well, since no scholars have opted to reply, I will share what little I am able to. New American Standard Bible: Gal 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified. Young's Literal Translation: Gal 2:16 having known also that a man is not declared righteous by works of law, if not through the faith of Jesus Christ, also we in Christ Jesus did believe, that we might be declared righteous by the faith of Christ, and not by works of law, wherefore declared righteous by works of law shall be no flesh.' The phrase in question, "faith of Christ" (YLT) or "faith in Christ" (NASB) is from the Greek "pistews christou". The 'ou' ending denotes the Genetive/Ablative case, so this is denoting either possession or separation. This phrase could then be written as either "faith that comes from Christ", or "the faith possessed by Christ". Both occurances in this verse using this form. Normally, "faith in Christ" is in the Greek either "pistews en christw", as in Gal. 3:26 (The Greek preposition "en" is counterpart to our "in"), or using the preposition "eis", or into. So I think that the more literal tranlation would be "faith from Christ" or "Christ's faith". And this is as far as I can go right now base on my current knowledge. I hope this help, at least a little! Love in Christ, Mark |

262 | A Horrible plan to burn for eternity | Deut 32:4 | mark d seyler | 174651
You wrote: "You say that God wants everyone to be saved, so if someone rejects God, it's not because God wanted them to. That goes in direct oposition to what I read in Job 14:5, "Since his days are determined, the number of months is with You; You have apointed his limits, so that he cannot pass." The Bible says: 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (3) For this is good and acceptable before God our Savior, (4) who desires all men to be saved and to come to a full knowledge of truth. Job writes of the lengths of our lives, same as in Psalm 139, "The days fashioned for me". In 1 Peter 2:8 "They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do." This is not to say that God destined people to sin, which would make God the originator of sin. What is destined is that when they disobey the word, they stumble. You cannot sin without consequence. Exodus 32:32 tells us that names are removed from God's book when they sin. This is not a preset list of persons. Eph. 1:4 Elect in Him - when we are born again we are positionally "in Christ", and we receive all benefits - All - benefits from being in Christ. There is not ONE benefit we receive outside of Christ, or separate from Christ, including Election. Christ is the Elect Servant (See Isaiah 42), and we are elect in Him. You wrote: "If God did give everyone a choice as you say, why do you think He created some with the skill and intelligence to choose the right path, while not giving those abilities to others?" Some are willing in the face of God's gospel of grace to let go of their sin, and others are not. This is not based on intelligence or skill, in fact, Paul wrote: 1 Co 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. and 1 Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. you wrote: "It dosen't make sense that a loving, just and merciful creator would create human beings just so that one day He could burn trillions of them in the lake of fire for the rest of eternity. By the way, what kind of justice is eternal punishment? What happened to the devine concept of "an eye for an eye?" " I agree with you to the extent that I do not believe that God made trillions of people for the express purpose of casting them into eternal punishment. Even the place of punishment was not made for man, but for the devil and his angels. Eternal punishment never was God's wish for man. But for those who persist in their rebellion against God, the Bible is perfectly clear, there is no other option. Mankind was created to live forever, that we might live with God forever. God provides a way to remove the consequence of sin through Jesus. But those who will not come to Him that they might be saved, there is the full consequence of sin, the eternal existance we were created for, but not with God, rather in the only other place there will be, the place of torment, and eternal punishment of the full weight of sin against an Eternal and Infinitely Holy God. 263 | God's eternal purpose? | Deut 32:4 | mark d seyler | 174643
Hi Pukalanian, The Bible says God wants everyone to be saved, so if someone rejects God, it's not because God wanted them to. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (3) For this is good and acceptable before God our Savior, (4) who desires all men to be saved and to come to a full knowledge of truth. God provided a way for all men to be saved from their sins. John 3:14-17 (14) And even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, (15) that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (16) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (17) For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. Would we say that the Lord of Heaven isn't fair? Ezekiel 18:29-32 (29) But the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not fair. Are My ways not fair, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not fair? (30) I will judge you, each man by his ways, O house of Israel, declares the Lord Jehovah. Turn and be made to turn from all your transgressions, and iniquity shall not be a stumbling-block to you. (31) Cast away all your transgressions from you by which you have transgressed in them, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why will you die, O house of Israel? (32) For I do not have delight in the death of him who dies, declares the Lord Jehovah. So turn and live. God does not want any of us to die in our sins. But He will judge us by them if we steadfastly refuse His salvation. Love in Christ, Mark |

264 | HOW DO WE GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT? | Eph 4:30 | mark d seyler | 174632
The simple answer to your question is disobedience. To grieve the Holy Spirit is to sadden Him, to give sorrow. I would suggest beginning with that portion of Scripture which speaks of grieving the Holy Spirit, and study Ephesians 4:17-32. There are a number of behaviors mentioned which reflect living according to the old man. We are to "put on the new man", to begin to walk as Jesus walked. I think that it is when we choose to walk in the flesh, and do the deeds of the flesh, that we sadden the Holy Spirit, because we are choosing trash over the most beautiful and wonderful God and Creator, Who loves us, and gave Himself for us. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

265 | Honey from the rock? revelation please. | Dan 2:28 | mark d seyler | 174630
Hi Hidden Treasures, In Deut. 32, Moses is using very poetic language to describe as God led the Israelites through the wilderness. His referrence to honey from the rock and oil from the flinty rock is of God's divine provision for His people, even as they continued in disobedience. Now, of your son's dream. If your son believes his dream may have been from the Lord, I would recommend praying about it with your Bible Study group (home fellowship or other small group). I believe that it is within the context of our small fellowships as believers that God wants us to address such things. If God wants to speak through a dream, I believe He will make it's meaning known, and there will be no confusion or question. But it may simply be "just a dream." I hope this helps! 266 | marking our body's!! | Lev 19:28 | mark d seyler | 174628
Hi Grace7044, Lev 19:28 And you shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead; and you shall not put on yourself any etched mark; I am Jehovah. Marking one's body was often done as a form of worship to false gods. Nowadays, people will tattoo themselves indescriminately, but God wants us to be set apart for Himself, not going in all the ways the world goes. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

267 | Why was Jephthah allowed to kill daughte | Gen 22:12 | mark d seyler | 174594
It's possible Jephthah redeemed his daughter according to the provisions of Leviticus: Lev 27 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by thy estimation. 3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. 5 And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. For a daughter under 20 years old, Jephthah would have paid to the temple 10 shekels, and her life would be spared. The priests would have been able to tell him this. We don't know exactly what happened. As to whether God would condone such an act, I think what He said through Hosea bears direct application: Hos 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Jer 22:28 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not? Jer 22:29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD. Jer 22:30 Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah. 270 | where is the sealed book | Is 29:11 | mark d seyler | 174473
Hi Historian, This "sealed book" is being used as a figure of speech: Isa 29:11 "And the whole vision to you is like the words of a sealed book which they give to one knowing books, saying, Please read this. Then he says, I am not able, for it is sealed. 12 And the book is given to one who does not know books, saying, Please read this. Then he says, I do not know books." The prophet says "the vision is LIKE the words of a sealed book", and he goes on to explain that he means it will not be understood, whether you "know books", can read, or not. Those to whom the prophecy is give won't understand it, not because they lack the ability or not, but because of their hypocrisy. To those who do not wish to know God, God sometimes makes Himself unknowable to them. This was also true of the Pharisees in the New Testament. After they had chosen to reject Jesus as the Messiah, it was said of them that they could not believe. There are several examples of this in the Bible. When man hardens his heart to God, God may harden man's heart permanently. This is prophesied for the end of the age also, as those who "refused to love the truth will be given a strong delusion, that they would believe the lie". (See 2 Thess. 2) This is how God sometimes reserves people to judgement, declaring that the opportunity for their believing has ended. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Dan, The only two places I can think of that could fit your question are of King Josiah in 2 Kings 23, who cut down the groves and scattered human bones to defile them, and Ezekiel 37, as the prophet sees a vision of the reformation of Israel. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

272 | Please explain Romans 11:29. | Rom 11:29 | mark d seyler | 174467
Hi VDavis, The gifts being referred to in this passage are specific gifts, referred to in the context. The Greek word used for gifts here is "charismata", the plural form of "charis". Charis is used in Romans 5-6, translated "grace". Charismata is used in in romans 12:6, translated "gifts", as Paul gives a teaching on spiritual gifts. Since the general context of Romans 11 is of the election of Israel, with their belief, unbelief, and the opportunity presented to the gentiles, this reference to gifts is somewhat enigmatic. It could be refering back to verses 5-6, and the grace of election, except those instances of charis are all singular, and in verse 29 charismata is plural, so that if it includes the grace of election, it also includes more. So what it the more that it includes? This is where I have to go to other passages that tell me about the charismata, the gifts, and in the very next chapter Paul writes about the charismata, the gifts, that are given. These are the "spiritual gifts", the supernatural abilities God gives to us to enable us to do the works that He has assigned for each of us. So according to this passage, God gives us grace towards salvation, and graces (gifts) towards the ministry of the body of Christ, and He does not take back any of these gifts. Now, if we continue in sin, God will do what is required to bring us back to repentance. Our ministry may stop, and we can become stalled in our walk (See Hebrews 12). But when we return, as God returns us to Him, we will find that we still have those gifts He gave to us, and that there is still work for us to accomplish. Charismata, graces, never were dependant on our "being good". If they were, well, none of us are good. God saves us, and equips us for work. He has preordained works for us to walk in (Eph 2:10). We are either moving forward, walking in those works, or we are stalled, not moving forward. But God, in the grace He lavishes upon us, intends for us to continue our walk once we have repented of the sin "that is so good at standing in our way". Please also see Post 161010. God may take back the ministry He has assigned us to if we are unfaithful with it, He may remove the resources He has made available if we misuse them, but He does not take back the supernatural abilities He has given to us to do His work. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

274 | what is the gift of descerning spirits? | Phil 1:1 | mark d seyler | 174454
Hi Grenee, Here is the referrence: 1 Cor 12:10 "...and to another, workings of powers, and to another, prophecy, and to another, discerning of spirits, and to another, kinds of languages, and to another, interpretation of languages." Discerning is from the Greek "diakrisis", meaning estimating, judging, discerning, distinguishing. It is used in Hebrews 5:14 "But solid food is for those full grown, having exercised the faculties through habit, for 'distinction' of both good and bad." And in Romans 14:1 "But him that is weak in faith receive ye, yet not for 'decision' of scruples." Robertsons says this: "A most needed gift to tell whether the gifts were really of the Holy Spirit and supernatural (cf. so-called “gifts” today) or merely strange though natural or even diabolical." And Vincent: "Rev., correctly, discernings. Distinguishing between the different prophetic utterances, whether they proceed from true or false spirits." I understand this gift to be referring to the supernatural ability to be able to distinguish what kind of spirit one is dealing with, whether it be of God or not. I hope this helps! 276 | Another question - Fight the good Fight | 1 Tim 6:12 | mark d seyler | 174012
Hi Pat, Ephesians 6:10-14 (10) For the rest, my brothers, be made powerful in the Lord and in the might of His strength. (11) Put on all the armor of God, for you to be able to STAND against the wiles of the Devil, (12) because wrestling against flesh and blood is not to us, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world's rulers, of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenlies. (13) Because of this, take up all of the armor of God that you may be able to RESIST in the evil day, and having worked out all things, to STAND. (14) Then STAND firm, "having girded your loins about with truth" and having put "on the breastplate of righteousness," Literally, "our wrestling" is not with flesh and blood... The wrestling match of Paul's day was two opponents, in a ring, the one that loses is the one who either touches the ground, or steps out of the ring. In other words, the one who fails to stand. Our spiritual warfare it to not let these dark powers throw us down. We are to stand. We do not have to defeat Satan, or the powers of darkness, because Jesus has already done that. What we have to do is STAND. Fighting and arguing is directly addressed in the Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:23-26 (23) But refuse the foolish and uninstructed questionings, knowing that they generate quarrels. (24) But a slave of the Lord ought not to quarrel, but to be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing, (25) in meekness teaching those who have opposed, if perhaps God may give them repentance for a full knowledge of the truth, (26) and they having regained senses out of the snare of the devil, being captured by him to do the will of that One. We are not to do it. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

277 | Paul refers to mystery of Christ | Col 4:3 | mark d seyler | 173985
Hi Rosiedog, I'd like to expand a little bit, if I may, on the answer Doc gave to you. In the Greek language, "musterion", from which we get "mystery", didn't mean quite the same thing to them as mystery does to us. We think of "mystery" as something we can't figure out. But the Greek "musterion" refered to something that had been secret, but now is being revealed. As Paul says, "proclaim the mystery", he means "tell about this thing that had been a secret, but is now revealed". I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

278 | What did lucifer do while in heaven? | Ezek 28:13 | mark d seyler | 173972
Hi e.narey, I have heard that before also. The Scripture referrence I have heard used was: Eze 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. The LITV translates it in this way: "the workmanship of your tambourines and of your flutes in you." Here is the NASB translation: Ezek 28:13 "You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, Was in you. On the day that you were created They were prepared. The NASB translates these words as the settings for the jemstones that covered this cherub. Jaimeson Fausset Brown says "tabrets — tambourines. pipes — Literally, “holes” in musical pipes or flutes." The word translated Tabrets in the KJV, and Settings in the NASB, is the Hebrew "Toph", which is used 16 other times in the Old Testament, always clearly in the context of being a musical instrument. The word translated "Pipes", or "Settings", the Hebrew "neqeb", is only used here, so we are not able to compare this to other uses. Now, were we to understand that this cherub did in fact have musical instruments built into his body, it's still a bit of a leap to say that this was the heavenly worship leader. Scripturally, all we can say of this cherub was that it was the "covering cherub". I am not aware of any Scripture that further defines what this "covering", or "fencing in", refers to. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Chusarcik, 2 Ch 30:8 Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. In 2 Chronicles 30:8, stiffnecked is contrasted with yeilding, so stiffnecked would mean unyielding, or stubborn. Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Devon, Concerning the office and role of the prophet within the Church: Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: I would ask you, does it seem to you that we are in unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God? When does our full knowledge of Jesus come? When will we achieve the full stature that Jesus has? 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Not until we see Him. Are there still those in the Church blown about by every wind of doctrine? If the answer is yes, then prophets are for today. Love in Christ, Mark |
