121 | does this mean anything? | Ps 139:1 | humbledbyhisgrace | 207705
Greetings walkforchrist! And welcome to the Study Bible Forum! And by the way, thanks for adding a little about yourself in your profile. That will help others understand you better and in your case hopefully will help us all understand the need to be graceful and encouraging! Let me start with addressing your question in this way. I personally do not know of anywhere in scripture that teaches us God speaks to us in a mystical way. Seeking meaning based on the location we open our bible would seem to me to be pointless. Seeking meaning of the written word in which you read is a different story :-) Many times even Christians who have been Christians for some time still approach things in a mystical way so to speak. Perhaps it is our fallen nature that causes us to do such things. We have no need to approach the bible and/or even our understanding of God in a mystical way. God has revealed to us what He would have us know of Him through His written word. So, instead of seeking some special meaning based on what page we opened to, we need to open all the pages and seek to understand what God has revealed of Himself and His will to us in the inspired written word of God. The scriptures teach us to study to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15) and also Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2) and to put off your old self and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds (Ephesians 4:22-23). We do this by the reading and study of God's word, prayer, and fellowship with the body of Christ. Does this help? Steve |

122 | What do you think, Steve? | Prov 4:10 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190921
What do I think? By the grace of God, I agree with scripture! God is absolutely sovereign and mankind is absolutely corrupted by sin and in desperate need of the sovereign God to intercede in our life to overcome the corruption of sin that we (mankind) cannot overcome! The scriptures are full of both of these teachings. But a sample to consider... The book of Job, 1 Chronicles 29:11, Daniel 4:35, Psalms 22:28, Psalms 115:3, Isaiah 14:27, Romans 11:36, 1 Timothy 6:13-15, John 3:27, Ephesians 1:3-6, Romans 8:5-8, 1 Corinthians 2:14, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Galatians 5:17, John 3:3-6, Romans 7:14-25, Ephesians 2:3, etc, etc, etc... Did you take note of Doc's post 190917 ? More excellent scriptures to ponder on this matter! So, what do you think Val? Steve |

126 | Why do people say this when in all actua | Isaiah | humbledbyhisgrace | 194811
Lamp, Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! You have been given the correct information. Be sure to thank God for those who shared this good news with you all your life as you put it! God's word tells us this very thing you have been told. See below! 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NASB) 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures Jesus did die for our sins! Praise God! His way is perfect and complete! There is no other way!!! Check this out! Romans 3:23 (NASB) says "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" and Romans 6:23 (NASB) says "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. " and Romans 5:8 (NASB) says "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." and Romans 10:9 (NASB) says "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" Have you ever confessed Jesus as your Lord? Do you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead? Jesus did die for our sins! There is no other way! There is salvation in no one else! (Acts 4:12) Steve |

127 | ... | Is 43:7 | humbledbyhisgrace | 166445
Isaiah 29:16 You turn things around! Shall the potter be considered as equal with the clay, That what is made would say to its maker, "He did not make me"; Or what is formed say to him who formed it, "He has no understanding"? Isaiah 45:9 Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, 'What are you doing? Or the thing you are making say, He has no hands? "Why destroy Sodom when he knew about San Francisco? Why create Adam and Eve in the first place if he knew what would happen? Why create Adam to Noah if he was going to kill them all anyway?" For His Glory! "Why kill everyone but Noah if he knew what the world would end up like?" Again, for His glory! When we see what the world will end up like, we will see His glory. We will see how His ways are much higher then our ways and His thoughts higher then our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9) And ALL will bow before Him and confess Him as Lord! (Philippians 2:9-1). "Why does god seem surprised by the actions/reactions of men?" Where do you find God surprised at anything man has done? God knew you before you were even created in your mothers womb (Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:4-5) He knows everything about you even down to the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30) He created you for His purpose not your own. "Why does god get upset when men turn away from him, he should expect it?" What makes you think He doesn't expect it? After all, it's a part of His plan as is all things before and after this day (Ephesians 1:9-10, Romans 8:28). "Why does god even have human emotions like hatred, anger and jealousy? Aren't those 'bad' traits? If he were the vast intelligence being that created all things why does he have this primitive, negative human qualities?" Possibly you should take the time to read the word of God and seek the answers their. The word of God clearly teaches us we are created in God's image (Genesis 1:26). God has not taken on our traits. Humans are the created being not the creator. We (mankind) have been made in the Creator's image not the other way around. These "traits" you mention are perfect in the creator. Mankind is the corrupted one! May God show mercy and reveal to you His truth! Steve |

132 | satan's big lie. | Jer 29:11 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190588
Hi sqkeener, Scripture refers to satan as the father of lies (John 8:44). Actually, the scriptures teach us much about satan. It also teaches us in James 1:14 we are tempted by our own lust. James 1:14-15 (NASB) 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. It is not satan that always deceives us but our own sinful nature leads us into sin as well if we give into it. Your question is a broad one, but a very good one to consider for all. I say this because we (Christians) need to understand who God is, what does He teach us about Himself in scripture? What does He teach us about satan, evil, and our own nature? If we are to know the difference between what is of God and what is evil then we must know and understand what scripture teaches us. It is important for us to study His word and spend time with Him. The more we understand of Him the better equipped we are to discern what is of God and what is of evil. A good example we can look to on this subject is when Jesus told Peter “Get behind Me, satan” (Matthew 16:23). Now as we read the passage of scripture (Matthew 16:21-23), one might first think that what Peter was doing was the right thing. Obviously, Peter thought it was. But we see from Jesus rebuke of Peter an excellent example of why your question is so important for us to consider. It is obvious from the Lord’s words to Peter, that Peter was influenced by evil. It may seem hard to grasp but the Lord’s words are clear as He says "… Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man's." (Matthew 16:23 NASB). This is a good example as it shows us the contrast of what we may perceive to be good and what are actually the things of God. Using this passage of scripture we can see that Peter did not fully understand what the Lord had just told them in verse 21. Had he have known and understood perhaps he would not have been tempted to and/or acted on the temptation to do that which contradicted the will of God. It appeared to Peter the right thing to do would be to prevent the Lord from going and suffering these things. This seems logical and it is easy to understand why Peter would have acted this way. But it was God’s will that Jesus suffer all these things and be put to death and be raised again from the dead. The Lord Jesus recognized the evil as it was clearly in contradiction to the will of God. This is also a good example (in my opinion) of how mankind's ways can and do fall short when compared to God's ways. How do we know the difference? By knowing what the will of God is! We study His word, seek Him out daily through His word, prayer, fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and get to know Him and what He has revealed to us through His word and through His creation. It is not always easy as you can see from the example of Peter given above. But we must strive to study His word and seek His will. Even if it may seem right to us, if it contradicts the will of God, it is sinful and must be rejected! Hope this is in some way helpful as I think your question is a good one and is important to not only understand but to apply as well. God bless, Steve |

135 | When does temptation become sin? | Matt 5:28 | humbledbyhisgrace | 185270
Greetings Aminat! It is a good question you ask and one I consider important for us all to understand. Many will teach you that it is the act that establishes it as a sin. There was a recent discussion on the forum about this. The example was used when David saw Uriah's wife Bathsheba showering (2 Samuel 11) it was called the temptation and the fact that he slept with her it was called the sin. This is how many understand it apparently. At least I have heard it explained in such a manner many times. However, using the same example of David mentioned here, consider what Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 Matthew 5:28 (NASB) "but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." So we can safely say that sin is actually committed before the actual physical manifestation of the act. I do think it is important to note, the act itself would also be sin. But in the example used here, the violation of God's law can be accomplished even without the physical manifestation. As I understand it, the temptation is not sin, but sin is accomplished in the heart regardless if someone follows through with the lust in which they were drawn into the temptation in the first place or not. I personally am not sure how to explain at what point the temptation becomes sin. I think I understand it but I'm hesitant to teach it as fact/truth in fear of misleading someone. I would say this though, although the temptation may not be sin, it clearly reveals the sinful nature within. One last thought on this. I tend to believe for a child of God, conviction is a good indicator of when we are either about to fall into sin or have fallen into sin. By Faith, Steve |

139 | Is it easy for God to forgive? | Matt 6:15 | humbledbyhisgrace | 199958
Greetings WOS! Welcome back :-) To all who read let it be known I'm not attempting to teach on this matter. Just thinking out loud! Here are some initial thoughts for consideration. It would seem to me a harder thing for Him to do if He didn't forgive the repentant heart considering the price that was paid. When I consider passages of scripture like is listed below speaking to His lovingkindness, compassion, great love and richness of His grace etc... I'm reminded of His nature. We also know He is just. So in regards to forgiveness of those who repent, not only is He right to do so, but it seems to me He is acting out of His nature. Considering the price that was paid and His nature and your question, I can't help but wonder is it harder for Him to punish those who don't repent then it is for Him to forgive those that do? Psalms 86:5 (NASB) For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You. Nehemiah 9:17b (NASB) ... But You are a God of forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness; And You did not forsake them. Ephesians 1:7-8a (NASB) 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 1:8a which He lavished on us... Ephesians 1:5 (NASB) He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will Romans 2:4 (NASB) Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? Ephesians 2:4-8 (NASB) 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 2:5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 2:6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 2:7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; Easy or hard, He is justified in doing so and we can be assured He will (1 John 1:9). 140 | Hell! | Matt 8:12 | humbledbyhisgrace | 185790
Greetings mae! It is good that you seek a better understanding of the subject! Here are some more scriptures for reference and consideration. Note, the scriptures speak of eternal punishment and clearly speak not only of fire, but an unquenchable fire. Also, keep this in mind, the number of times the scriptures speak to something or refer to something has nothing at all to do with how we interpret the scriptures. If the word of God says it one time, it is as it was spoken / written! Matthew 25:41 (NASB) "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels" Matthew 25:46 (NASB) "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Mark 9:43 (NASB) "If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire" Mark 9:47-48 (NASB) 9:47 "If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell, 9:48 where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED." Revelation 14:9-11 (NASB) 14:9 Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 14:10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 14:11 "And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name." Revelation 20:10 (NASB) "And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Compare this last verse Revelation 20:10 with the first verse listed in this post Matthew 25:41. God Bless you mae, Steve |
