502 | The end part of Jonah? | Jonah | azurelaw | 217736
Dear eascusa, I like reading the book of Jonah. However, since it is getting late at where I live, I can only give you a very short answer. It is about God's mercy and saving grace vs man's self-righteousness (we tend to judge and decide who deserves to be saved). Of course, the story has very rich message. You may go to the below link for more information or commentary: monergism.com Type "Jonah" in the search box to assess to articles or MP3 according to your need. Shalom Azure |

503 | What is th sign of Jonah mean in Matthew | Jon 1:17 | azurelaw | 214153
Dear eascusa, Welcome to the forum. Matt 16:4 A wicked and morally unfaithful generation craves a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Then He left them and went away. [Jonah 3:4, 5.] Jon 3:4 Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he cried out and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown." Jon 3:5 Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. Here is my 2 cents. The first time Jesus mentioned about Jonah's sign in Matthew Ch 12 was to show His status in Ch 12 v41 where within the context He refuted Pharisees' blasphemies. I believe this is the central idea when Jesus cited about Jonah. Now, in Ch 16, the context is different from that in chapter 12. You see from the amplified version, the cross reference verse for Mat 16:4 is Jonah 3:4-5. It is God's miraculous work that the whole Nineveh (a wicked people as well as Israel's enemy) saved. I believe this is to show God's mercy to also save the gentile when following the context in Ch 16 and the preceding chapter 15 v21-39. Jesus also compared the Pharisees and Sadducees with the wicked Ninevites that even the most wicked Ninevites did not reject God's grace and repented, yet the Pharisees, Sadducees and religious leaders were so much hard-hearted. I heard a preacher said that Ch 15:37 (feeding the 4000 thousand) "...large baskets full", original word "spuris; of unc" used is in association with gentiles; while a different word used in Ch 14:20 (feeding the 5000 thousand) "kophinos; a prim. word; a basket:--baskets" denotes the Jews. However, I don't know Greek, I believe brother Tim or other can help to verify this if they are around. Shalom Azure |

505 | occupations of the apostles | Matthew | azurelaw | 189838
Welcome, leta4christ: --quote: Who were the disciples? "And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him (Mt. 10:1-; see also Mk. 3;18; Lk. 6;14). " All of the twelve disciples were Galileans except Judas who came from Kerioth. Of the twelve: four were fishermen, one a publican (or a tax collector), and another a Zealot (or revolutionary). The occupations of the other six are not known. --unquote Source: Dr. Lee W. Warren at http://www.plim.org/Web articles96/What happen to 12 Disciples Apr96.html Shalom Azure |

506 | How should we Pray? | Matthew | azurelaw | 190769
Dear roscoe12, Welcome to the forum. There is a well-known teaching about prayer in Mat 6:5-15. Jesus also made a parable in Luke 18:9-14 to warn us from being self-righteous in our prayers. There are times when we pray, our focus could be on the ill-doings / wrong doings of others but not the focus on our own sin. You may also read 1 Thess 5:16-18, Col 4:2. The below sermon of C.H. Spurgeon concerning prayer should be helpful, too. http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/1039.htm Shalom Azure |

510 | Why were they called wise/foolish virgin | Matthew | azurelaw | 207480
Dear JKERR, You ask the question and answer it yourself without giving scriptural support. Your question and answer seems to me that you are trying to put much emphasis on "virgin" and "sex". What is your motive? Note that this is a study bible forum, a place for people who honestly and earnestly study God's word. Please reread the terms of use for proper conduct. Shalom Azure |

512 | what's salt and light on a dark world | Matthew | azurelaw | 221595
Dear curlertwirler, I suppose you are referring to Matthew Chapter 5. Please note the below is a citation from pastor John Piper's sermon where he refuted the prosperity gospel preaching. I believe the context of the scripture he was using in the explanation about the salt and light could shed some light on your better understanding. You have to grasp the main idea of Jesus' teaching on salt and light within the context of the beatitude in Matthew in order to have a proper understanding. ******* The context of Jesus’ saying shows us what the salt and light are. They are the joyful willingness to suffering for Christ. Here is what Jesus said, “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth. . . . You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:11-14). What will make the world taste (the salt) and see (the light) of Christ in us is not that we love wealth the same way they do. Rather, it will be the willingness and the ability of Christians to love others through suffering, all the while rejoicing because their reward is in heaven with Jesus. ****** Shalom Azure |

513 | What is prayer, Where does it come from? | Matthew | azurelaw | 225538
Dear legsrandall, From what you have written, I can see your anxiety about your sister and your love towards her. As you have mentioned, she has a lot of question and view points on prayer which I think you do as well, I am afraid your questions cannot be satisfactorily dealt with in a post or two. I agree that we should not treat prayer lightly as this is a privilege and grace given to believers from God to commune with Him. Jesus has some teachings about prayer in Matthew 6. Please read through the chapter in context. Furthermore, I would also like to recommend a book to you which I think properly dealt with those common mistaken views on prayers held by nowaday's believers. The book is also very biblical, too. I strongly recommend you to get a copy to read it or get one for your sister. "The God who hears" - by W. Bingham Hunter. Below are a few citations from the book for your quick reference:- "Prayer really makes sense only against the background of God's nature and attributes. First, we must know whom we are talking to. Second, we have got to know ourselves. Third we need someone who understands both God and ourselves to show us how to do it." "It is because God is holy, that we are asked to confess; it is because He knows everything, that we must be honest. Because He is sovereign, we must ask according to his will..." "From a biblical point of view, prayer is related to everything that we are and everything that God is. God does not respond to our prayers. God responds to us: to our whole life." Shalom Azure |
