443 | in psalm 69:4 why is david hated without | Ps 69:4 | azurelaw | 202918
Dear min.dickson, Welcome to the forum. “…the psalm belongs to Christ, and to the times of the Gospel, is abundantly evident from the citations out of it in the New Testament; as Psalm 69:4 in John 15:25; Psalm 69:9 in John 2:17; Psalm 69:21 in Matthew 27:34; Psalm 69:22 in Romans 11:9; Psalm 69:25 in Acts 1:16. The inscription of the psalm in the Syriac version is, "'a psalm' of David, according to the letter, when Shemuah (Sheba), the son of Bichri, blew a trumpet, and the people ceased from following after him (David); but the prophecy is said concerning those things which the Messiah suffered, and concerning the rejection of the Jews." And Aben Ezra interprets Psalm 69:36 of the days of David, or of the days of the Messiah.” - John Gill’s Exposition (source: http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/psalm/gill/psalm69.htm) I believe the below link is also helpful for you to understand Psalm 69. http://www.spurgeon.org/treasury/ps069.htm Shalom Azure |

444 | Ps. 82:6 "ye are gods" | Ps 82:6 | azurelaw | 216320
Dear misspr, Welcome to the forum. Kindly note that verses should not be taken out of the context. In the passage of Psalm 82, God demands righteous justice from the earthly magistrates or office since they are given authority in their office as sanctioned by God. Comments of great honour as "gods" has been given to them but it does not mean that they are really gods. Read also v7-8 that you will be clear about the picture. "The greatest honour was thus put upon them; they were delegated gods, clothed for a while with a little of that authority by which the Lord judges among the sons of men. And all of you are children of the Most High. This was their ex-officio character, not their moral or spiritual relationship. There must be some government among men, and as angels are not sent to dispense it, God allows men to rule over men, and endorses their office, so far at least that the prostitution of it becomes an insult to his own prerogatives. Magistrates would have no right to condemn the guilty if God had not sanctioned the establishment of government, the administration of law, and the execution of sentences. Here the Spirit speaks most honourably of these offices, even when it censures the officers; and thereby teaches us to render honour to whom honour is due, honour to the office even if we award censure to the officer bearer." -- Charles Spurgeon For Is 41:23, [you will find that God is mocking the idols] please start reading v21-24 where the AMP version and my Chinese Bible show: Is 41:21 [You idols made by men's hands, prove your divinity!] Produce your cause [set forth your case], says the Lord. Bring forth your strong proofs, says the King of Jacob. Is 41:22 Let them bring them forth and tell us what is to happen. Let them tell us the former things, what they are, that we may consider them and know the outcome of them; or declare to us the things to come. Is 41:23 Tell us the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods; yes, do good or do evil [something or other], that we may stare in astonishment and be dismayed as we behold [the miracle] together! Is 41:24 Behold, you [idols] are nothing, and your work is nothing! The worshiper who chooses you is an abomination [extremely disgusting and shamefully vile in God's sight]. [I Cor. 8:4.] Shalom Azure |

447 | is 70 years what is promise man | Ps 90:10 | azurelaw | 230711
Dear Bertall, I think you might be looking for Psalm 90:10. However, read the whole chapter that Moses was not affirming the life expectancy is 70 years, but... "...sings of the frailty of man, and the shortness of life, contrasting therewith the eternity of God, and founding thereon earnest appeals for compassion....... Moses himself lived longer than this, but his was the exception not the rule: in his day life had come to be very much the same in duration as it is with us. This is brevity itself compared with the men of the elder time; it is nothing when contrasted with eternity. Yet is life long enough for virtue and piety, and all too long for vice and blasphemy." -- Charles Spurgeon Shalom Azure |

Dear brother Edward, Welcome to the forum. From what you have posted here, it seems that it is not a question but just a follow-up note of comment on the primary question you asked few days ago. May I suggest that you click the suitable classification of post when you do posting so that the website won't left with too many questions??? (in fact it is not) unswered. By doing so, other readers will find it easier to follow the subject as well. God bless you. Azure |

Dear brother Edward, I apologize for my mistake. I have confused your subject with another posting (by Margeret) which talks about the worship and praise of sinful(?) leaders in church. However, my guess is that you could be responding to the similar context of the subject. Kindly correct me if I misunderstood you. And yet, are you posting a question? :-) God bless. Azure |

455 | Why is pride a sin? | Proverbs | azurelaw | 194876
Dear Charles, Brother Michael has quoted you some scriptures to affirm you that pride is a sin. However, you have to discern your heart if you are acting as a sharing of joy with your friends and relatives, or you are just boasting for your own success instead of glorifying God. Please also note that on the other hand, pretending to be humble is hypocrisy (also a kind of pride, Chinese is very good at it). "The truly humble man never feels that he has sufficiently abased himself before God. He feels that however low he bends, he could bend lower. He always feels that he is above his proper position before God. He looks at his position, and looks at where he should be, and he appears at a great distance from it. He calls the distance 'pride'. It is his pride that appears to him to be great, not his humility. It does not seem to him to be a great sign of his humility that he should lie in the dust at the feet of God. He thinks that is exactly where he belongs. ... do not forget to apply these things to yourself. Does it offend you when someone thinks himself a better Christian than everyone else? Do you think he is proud, and that you are humbler than he is? Then be careful, in case you become proud of your humility! Examine yourself. If you conclude, 'It seems to me that no-one is as sinful as I am,' do not be satisfied with this. Do you think you are better than others, because you admit that you are so sinful? Do you have a high opinion of this humility of yours? If you say, 'No, I do not have a high opinion of my humility, I think I am as proud as the devil,' then examine yourself again. Perhaps you are proud of the fact that you do not have a high opinion of your humility? You might be proud of admiting how proud you are!" - Jonathan Edwards **************************** Mat 7:1-2 1 Cor 11:31 My last question, how old are you? :-) Shalom Azure |

Dear loavesnfish, Below is a summary of the rules in reading Proverbs from the book "How to read the Bible for all its worth" - Fee and Stuart:- 1) Proverbs are often parabolic,i.e. figurative, pointing beyond themselves. 2) Proverbs are intensely practical, not theoretically theological. 3) Proverbs are worded to be memorable, not technically precise. 4) Proverbs are not designed to support selfish behaviour - just the opposite. 5) Proverbs strongly reflecting ancient culture may need sensible "translation" so as not to lose their meaning. 6) Proverbs are not guarantees from God, but poetic guidelines for good behaviour. 7) Proverbs may use highly specific language, exaggeration, or any of a variety of literary techniques to make their point. 8) Proverbs give good advice for wise approaches to certain aspects of life, but are not exhaustive in their coverage. 9) Wrongly used, proverbs might justify a crass, materialistic lifestyle. Rightly used, proverbs will provide practical advice for daily living. I would suggest you get a copy for your Bible study. Shalom Azure |
