383 | Was this really Samuel's spirit? | 1 Sam 28:11 | azurelaw | 201839
Dear budderfligh, Matthew Henry's commentary: ...God permitted the devil, to answer the design, to put on Samuel's shape, that those who would not receive the love of the truth might be given up to strong delusions and believe a lie. That it could not be the soul of Samuel himself they might easily apprehend when it ascended out of the earth, for the spirit of a man, much more of a good man, goes upward, Eccl. 3:21. But, if people will be deceived, it is just with God to say, "Let them be deceived." ... 387 | How is David's census considered sinful? | 2 Sam 24:3 | azurelaw | 188978
Dear daveriff2, I will try to answer as best as I can. David tends to rely on his force instead of God (see verse 3). He has always been relying on God to fight for him in the past no matter how many army he has got. But he is alert and quick to repent. (see verse 10) Also see how does David reply in verse 14 regarding the options of punishment given by God. I think David is a good example for us that even we sin with our folly, we have to be alert with what we have done and be quick to repent. Hope the above is helpful. Shalom Azure |

388 | When/ why did Israel separate into 2 | 1 Kings | azurelaw | 202961
Dear aw1, Welcome to the forum and hope this is not a homework assignment. It can also be traced back to 2 Sam 12:10 for the cause of David’s sin. Later, Solomon went astray thus resulting punishment from God (1 King 11:9-13). Guvmoh has given you some background in answering your question. You may start from 1 Kings Chapter 11 to the end of 2 Kings for more details. Hope you enjoy your study. Shalom Azure |

Dear rcreative, The answer lies in the below verse: 1 Kin 18:19 "Now then send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table." "Its (Mount Carmel) name literally means plantation of high quality trees, roughly equivalent to the garden, in reference to the richly fertile character of the hillside." 395 | why does Elisha need music to intercede | 2 Kin 3:15 | azurelaw | 197402
Dear Rachel, I believe whoever attempts to make a response holds certain level of sincerity and is willing to help. Why not rephrase your concern a bit more friendly such as requiring for a biblical answer? I hope the below answer would not be viewed as silly nor guesses :-) "Verse 15. But now bring me a minstrel,.... A piper, a man that knows how to play upon the harp, as the Targum; according to Procopius Gazaeus, this was one of the Levites he ordered to be fetched, who was used to the spiritual melody of David, and could play on musical instruments as he directed. This he did to allay his passion, and compose his spirits, ruffled at the sight of Jehoram, and to fit him to receive prophetic inspiration, which sometimes came upon the Lord's prophets when thus employed, see 1 Samuel 10:5. Some think the music the prophet called for is that sort the Greeks call "harmony," which is the gravest and saddest, and settles the affections: and it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him; the spirit of prophecy, as the Targum, which came by the power of God, and as a gift from his hand" - John Gill's Exposition Shalom Azure |

396 | dove's dung or vegetable | 2 Kin 6:25 | azurelaw | 201943
Dear john, As recorded in the AMP version, it should be a kind of wild vegetable. My below search has provided some more information I hope would be helpful to you. "Dung - This Hebrew word is of a doubtful signification, and no where else used, probably it means a sort of pease, which in the Arabick language (near a - kin to the Hebrew) is called doves dung: for this was a food much in use amongst the poorer Israelites, and was a very coarse food, and therefore fit to be joined with the asses head: and a kab was the usual measure of all sorts of grains and fruits of that sort." - Wesley "dove's dung This probably denotes, as Bochart, Scheuchzer, and others suppose, a kind of pulse, or vetches, which the Arabs still call pigeon's dung. 'They never,' says Dr. Sahw, 'constitute a dish by themselves, but are strewed singly as a garnish over cuscasowe, pillowe, and other dishes. They are besides in the greatest repute after they are parched in pans and ovens; then assuming the name leb-lebby;' and he thinks they were so called from being pointed at one end, and acquiring an ash colour in parching." Dear fieldsrobyn (aka robynfields), It is very likely that you are having a dual registration on the forum which is in violation of the TOU. 400 | Should a member rebuke an elder? | 1 Chr 16:22 | azurelaw | 179907
Dear Bereaniam, Just a few words to encourage you. I will pray for you. It is really heartbreaking to see your engaged (14 years!) church in such situation. I trust that you still love them, keep on loving them and praying for them. The story of Jehoiada comes to my mind. Maybe you would like to read again 2 Chronicles 22:10 to 24:15. I love the final verse "...because of the good he had done in Israel for God and his temple." Shalom Azure |
