623 | cubit | Gen 6:15 | azurelaw | 202964
Dear Jessie, No need to apologize :-) As far as I know, the Bible did not specifically tell us what a cubit is. What I understand it is a standard of measure used in the ancient time by employing the length of the fore-arm starting from the elbow joint to the middle-finger tip as what user isa26 stated. (Other forum users please correct me if I am wrong). You may also google on the net (e.g. wikipedia) for other scholarly research. Shalom Azure |

624 | When/ why did Israel separate into 2 | 1 Kings | azurelaw | 202961
Dear aw1, Welcome to the forum and hope this is not a homework assignment. It can also be traced back to 2 Sam 12:10 for the cause of David’s sin. Later, Solomon went astray thus resulting punishment from God (1 King 11:9-13). Guvmoh has given you some background in answering your question. You may start from 1 Kings Chapter 11 to the end of 2 Kings for more details. Hope you enjoy your study. Shalom Azure |

625 | repopulation of animals after the flood | Gen 7:8 | azurelaw | 202933
Dear circlejh, Gen 7:8 Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, Gen 7:9 there went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. The Bible did not specifically mention the type of animals, like dinosaurs. It is certain that the animals that were repopulated after the flood were from those that entered the ark. Our brother Hank had the below recommendation before: "An excellent Christ-focused creation ministry where science and the Bible are fully integrated is Institute for Creation Research: icr.org. ... I recommend icr.org without reservation -- serious scientists with Ph.D's in their "heads" and Christ in their hearts." Shalom Azure |

629 | in psalm 69:4 why is david hated without | Ps 69:4 | azurelaw | 202918
Dear min.dickson, Welcome to the forum. “…the psalm belongs to Christ, and to the times of the Gospel, is abundantly evident from the citations out of it in the New Testament; as Psalm 69:4 in John 15:25; Psalm 69:9 in John 2:17; Psalm 69:21 in Matthew 27:34; Psalm 69:22 in Romans 11:9; Psalm 69:25 in Acts 1:16. The inscription of the psalm in the Syriac version is, "'a psalm' of David, according to the letter, when Shemuah (Sheba), the son of Bichri, blew a trumpet, and the people ceased from following after him (David); but the prophecy is said concerning those things which the Messiah suffered, and concerning the rejection of the Jews." And Aben Ezra interprets Psalm 69:36 of the days of David, or of the days of the Messiah.” - John Gill’s Exposition (source: http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/psalm/gill/psalm69.htm) I believe the below link is also helpful for you to understand Psalm 69. http://www.spurgeon.org/treasury/ps069.htm Shalom Azure |

630 | Why so some people treat pastors poorly? | 1 Tim 5:19 | azurelaw | 202873
Dear jweave, It is sad to see this happens at church. There are a number of verses talking about love among brothers. So, this also applies to pastors. In 1 Timothy 5:17 specifically mentioned that believers should have high respect to their ministers. 1 John 4:19-21 James 4:11-12 Hebrew 13:17 Col 3:12-17 Philippians 2:1-8, 14-15 Eph 4:1-16 1 Cor 1:10 Rom 12:9-18 Shalom Azure |

633 | Hatred..Am I truly a Christian?? | Matt 5:44 | azurelaw | 202855
Dear Lissamz, Brother Doc has given you an excellent answer and advice. When we pray God to teach us love, give us patience, etc., there are instances around us challenging us about that. For example, when I ask God for granting me patience, my daughter will challenge me with her disobedience that sometimes drives me crazy :-( When I ask God to grant me a loving heart, there are people around me appear to be offensive and disgusting - again, my challenges. We can't be perfect all at once, but just get closer to His image bit by bit when we are submissive. The more we get closer, the more of His glory we can see and enjoy thus the more strength we get from Him for the challenges lie ahead. May I humbly submit the below prayer by St Francis for you to meditate on:- "Peace Prayer" Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love, Where there is injury let me sow pardon, Where there is doubt let me sow faith, Where there is despair let me give hope, Where there is darkness let me give light, Where there is sadness let me give joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not try to be comforted but to comfort, Not try to be understood but to understand, Not try to be loved but to love. Because it is in giving that we receive, It is in forgiving that we are forgiven, And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. - St Francis ***** Rom 5:3-5 ... knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 634 | witnessing to church going homosexuals | Gen 9:25 | azurelaw | 202853
Dear Teriberry, If you are sure that he admitted himself as Christian, it would be advisable that you invite him to join you to study the bible together. To show that you care for his spiritual growth. Let God's Words do all the work instead of relying on our wit and effort. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Don't forget to pray for him and yourself that the Holy Spirit works in both of you for the glory of God. For more about homosexual issues, you may make use of the search function on the "advanced search" box by typing "homosex". Shalom Azure |

635 | HOW CAN GOD HELP ME WITH THIS COURT CASE | Phil 4:6 | azurelaw | 202826
Dear regina--, I feel terribly sorry to have learnt of your aweful situation. As brother Brad has mentioned, the forum does not suit to deal with this kind of issues and his advice is pertinently stated. However, please do not be disappointed. It is good that you bring this to the forum so that other brothers and sister who are reading your post will pray for you. Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. I will be praying for you and your kids. 637 | who was in the tombs?Matt27:53 | Matt 27:52 | azurelaw | 202587
Dear vdanna, This verse has been dealt with in past posts (post number 102255 and the relevant thread). You may also check on the below link for helpful commentary. http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/ However, I would also like to add my 2 cents to try a different approach to deal with the scripture. Each author of the Gospel Books has their own writing style and focus though most of their records are identical. For Matthew, one of the characteristics is his emphasis on the witness of 2 or more: 1/ calling of his disciples described in pairs of two (4:18-21, 10:1-4) 2/ parables employing the number of 2 (7:13-29 3/ the healing of 2 blind men (20:29-34), whereas Luke 18:35 and Mark 10:46-52 only mentioned one. 4/ witness of 2 or 3 (18:16-20) Now when we compare the passage recorded in the 3 books, I believe Matthew was trying to emphasize the witnessing of Christ being the Son of God. mat 27:51-54 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. NOW HE CENTURION, AND THOSE WHO WERE WITH HIM keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the THINGS that were happening, became very frightened and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!” mark 15:37-39 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the CENTURION, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!” luke 23:44-48 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Having said this, He breathed His last. Now when the CENTURION saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent.” And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, beating their breasts. Since the main target readers of Matthew were Jews, his mentioning of the raised bodies of the saints could serve a significant impact in convincing them about Jesus - the Son of God. We may also see another example: God talked to the people around when after Jesus being baptized. Mat 3:16-17 ... a voice out of the heavens said, "THIS IS MY BELOVED SON, IN WHOM I AM WELL-PLEASED.” God talked directly to Jesus in: Mark 1:10-11 ... "YOU ARE My beloved Son, in YOU I am well-pleased.” Luke 3:21-22 ..."YOU ARE My beloved Son, IN YOU I am well-pleased.” See the difference how Matthew's emphasis on witnessing. Shalom Azure |

It will show the verse in bold face. On the left hand side of the verse, you will see "I" (means verse information). Click on it then the verse will be listed with strong's number and the explanation at the bottom. You will also see the cross reference verses if it is available. 640 | 2 Cor. 2:14-16 | 2 Cor 2:14 | azurelaw | 202513
Dear mrxike, The sweet small or fragrance is the analogy Paul used to describe the Gospels and our witness of Christ. It should not be referred to as our physical smell as you have depicted. The below commentary from John Gill should be helpful for your understanding: "For we are unto God a sweet savour,.... Here a reason is given, why the savour of the knowledge of God in Christ is made manifest by the ministers of the Gospel, because they themselves are a sweet savour; not that they are so in themselves, for they have the same corrupt hearts and natures, and complain of them as other men; but as having the gifts and graces of the Spirit of God, comparable to fragrant and sweet smelling ointments, Song of Solomon 1:3, by which they are enabled to preach the savoury doctrines of the Gospel, and to adorn and recommend them by their exemplary lives and conversations: the allusion is to Aaron and the priests under the law, who were anointed with the anointing oil, which was poured upon their heads, ran down upon their beards, and descended to the skirts of their garments, so that they were all over a perfume, a sweet smell and savour; and so are the ministers of the word, being anointed with that, which the other was typical of. They are said to be a sweet savour of Christ, because they have their gifts, grace, and Gospel from him, and he is the subject of their ministry;..." To read more, go to : http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/ Shalom Azure P.S. A side note. I was once engaged in the flavour and fragrance essential oil industry. I heard of an expert (perfumer) mentioned that the memory that triggered by the smelling sense lasts the longest comparing to our visual and audio sense. |
