5715 | What is the difference bet Hades Hell? | Rev 20:13 | Searcher56 | 17728
Appleseed, We need to look at the original. I knew the English would give us trouble. I went looking and found this. I hope you are satisfied. Sheol (Hebrew) and Hades (Greek) are the temporary place of torment for the souls of the wicked dead. Sheol is translated "grave" 31 times, "hell" 31 times, and "pit" 3 times in King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. Hades is translated "Hell" 10 times and "grave" once by KJV. It is the place for the soul, not the body. Gehenna (Greek, but from a Hebrew name) is the Lake of Fire for the permanent place of torment of the souls of the wicked dead in their resurrected bodies. translated "Hell" all 12 times in KJV It is the permanent place for destruction of the "... soul and body ..." (Matthew 10:28). It is a place of "... fire that never shall be quenched" (Mark 9:45). Gehenna is the Lake of Fire described in Revelation 19 and 20. It is presently uninhabited, but the Beast and the False Prophet will be cast into it at the end of the tribulation (Revelation 19:20). One thousand years later, Satan will be cast into it (Rev 20:10) and will be followed shortly by the lost people of all previous time periods (Revelation 20:15). They will all enter Gehenna together, in there resurrected bodies, where they will remain in torment for all eternity. Hell is a rather general and inadequate term that is often used to refer to either Gehenna or the torment side of Hades, both by those who know the basic difference between these two specific places and by those who do not. tartaroo (Greek) - Refers to "Tartarus" and only occurs once in 2 Peter 2:4 where it is translated "hell" "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment ...." This is probably a separate place from Hades, and may be a place only for fallen angels. There are no Biblical references to people going there. abussos (Greek) - Abyss. It is translated "bottomless pit" 5 times, "deep" twice, and "bottomless" twice by KJV. It is where Satan will be locked up for the 1000 years of Christ's reign on earth. This is thought by many to be the same as the impassable gulf described in Luke 16:26. chasma (Greek) - a gaping opening, chasm, or gulf. It is translated "gulf" in its only occurrence in Luke 16:26, where it is the canyon separating the torment and comfort sides of Hades. Abraam kolpos (Greek) - Abraham's Bosom (Luke 16:22). Abraam is translated "Abraham" all 73 times. Kolpos is translated bosom 5 times and creek once (Acts 27:39). paradeisos - Paradise. It is translated "paradise" all 3 times by the KJV. "Paradise" is not the English translation of any other Greek word in scripture. First we hear the words of the thief and Jesus Christ on their crosses in Luke 23:42-43 Source: Matthew McGee Hell Part 2: The Differences between Hades and the Lake of Fire http://www.matthewmcgee.org/helwords.html |

5716 | What is the Sea, Death and Hades? | Rev 20:13 | Searcher56 | 17729
Appleseed, I think the sea means the ocean or any body of water. I just thought of those who died in the flood when Noah plus 7 were saved. There is a gulf in Luke 16:26, but that is a separation place between heaven and hell ... no man may cross. Death is a state of being (Matt 27:20, et. al.). Also, "I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death" (Rev 6:8). Now, this is what Nolan posted (hope you don't mind Nolan) Well, Ryrie's Study Bible has something good to say here... "6:8 ashen is a sickly, yellowish-green. Probably representing the inevitable result of disease that accompanies war and famine. Death claims the bodies and Hades the souls and spirits of one-fourth of the world’s population in this single judgment (cf. 9:18)." If Death claims the bodies of men, then it is only logical that Death must precede Hades, which is hell personified, a place for souls. Here is a little more on the relationship between Death and Hades from the Nelson NKJV Study Bible.. "Hades (Gk. 'hades') (6:8; 20:13, 14; Luke 16:23; Acts 2:27, 31) G86: The Greek term means “the place of the unseen.” It designates the invisible world of the dead, as does the Hebrew word 'sheol'. All people who die go to Hades because all pass from the visible world to the invisible. The association between Death and Hades is therefore a natural one. Unfortunately, this word has often been associated with hell, a place of eternal punishment. But there is a different Greek word for hell; it is 'gehenna' (see Mark 9:43–45). We cannot avoid Hades, but we can avoid hell, by believing in Jesus and receiving eternal life." I, however, do not entirely agree with Nelson's interpretation here, since I believe that believers go to a place called "Abraham's bosom" (based on Luke 16:19-31), which is entirely a different place than Hades, which is where those who have no hope in Christ go. "6:8 The appearance and description of the pale fourth horse is that of death. The pale, cold horseman relentlessly pursues his prey with renewed zeal. Hades, or the realm of the dead, follows after him (cf. Matt 11:23, note)." (Believer's Study Bible) Hades travels after Death, which will eventually claim the bodies of the human race, and those who are not saved will go to Hades, which follows (or travels) after Death. Death is the last single great "test" for the Christian in their walk in trusting Jesus Christ! Death does not always mean that a person will go to Hades, which explains why Death and Hades are not always mentioned together. --Nolan Hope this helps, Steve |

Word Study ... Sheol, Gehenna, Tartaroo, Hades ... God's day to you, winningside, No problem. It is my fault for not understanding. The English word hell in the Bible depends on the translation. There is one Hebrew word and three Greek words. In KJV, we see hell in Isaiah 5:14 - Sheol (Strong's 07585). NIV says grave. - translated grave 31 times, hell 31, pit 3. NAS says Sheol each time. - it is from Shaal (Strong's 07592) which means to ask, enquire, borrow, beg Matthew 10:28 usually has the word hell, which is Gehenna (Strong's 1067) in the Greek. - This was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction. - It is from two Hebrew words -- Gay' (Strong's 01516) valley, a steep valley, narrow gorge -- Hinnom (Strong's 02011) which may be the same valley and means lamentation The KJV has hell in 2 Peter 2:4, which is Tartaroo (Strong's 5020) - The ancient Greeks named it for the dark subterranean region, the abode of the wicked dead, where they suffer punishment for their evil deeds. It is like the Gehenna of the Jews. Then there is this passage (Rev 20:13-14), where we see the word hell in the KJV and Hades in the NAS and NIV. It is the word Hades (Strong's 86). - It is from the negative form of Eido (Strong's 1492) to see. Notice that death and hell was cast into the "Lake of Fire" A few links to consider http://www.thewordsofeternallife.com/hell.html http://what-the-hell-is-hell.com/HellStudy/HellCharts.htm http://ecclesia.org/truth/hell.html ... the latter even breaks down the number of times hell is used. For me hell is the place where one is separated from God forever. Searcher |

5720 | No Sea on the New Earth | Rev 21:1 | Searcher56 | 57989
Scripture ... Revelation 20:13, 21:23-24 ... Makarios, greetings my brother. We know the sea just gave up the dead (Rev 20:13), so it could of been corrupted. Could it be that people can hide, for awhile, in the sea. They will away from the Light, since there will be no more sun or moon (21:23-24). I don't think any light will be able to penetrate the sea very deep. This may be limited to the Great Sea. If there were no seas, there would be more room to live. I know you have answers from experts .. these are my thoughts. Searcher |
