541 | Jehovah is the only true God | 1 Cor 8:5 | Ray | 130917
Hi Noveta, You received confirmation from Tim for your understanding or interpreting what he was saying. He agreed that you were understanding the Scriptures. My comments were on the interpretation of the Isaiah 45:5 passage using capitalization of Deity. By the inclusion of "for he says" in my remarks I was putting that phrase in context for going from verse 6 to your quote of verse 5. (By the way, you had gone from talking about the devil to your typing "for he says".) My point is that in order to know Him we have to acknowledge Him as God and we do that by capitalizing. 1) The one thing I would possibly say about your post that you were asking confirmation for: you said that we should follow Jehovah. Jesus said also "Follow Me". 2) As far as Jehovah being the true God: I think that we could consider 1 John 5:20, "And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in order that we might know (Him) who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God/ and eternal life." The Jehovah's Witnesses are proud to know Him by His name Jehovah. In contrast we learn by the Isaiah passage that the Lord, the God of Israel calls us by our name as well. Isaiah 45:4b, "...I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor Though you have not known (Me). 5 I am the Lord, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me./" The One/ who is not known can be compared/contrasted to the one true God/ and eternal life. From the heart, Ray |

542 | Amplified Bible Audio form | 1 Cor 9:18 | Ray | 139746
Hi Dominic, I don't see the absence of an audio edition of the Amplified version a matter of economics, at all. The version does not lend itself well to an auditory reading. It is a translation that would not flow smoothly with its parentheses, brackets, and amplifications. And if the narator left them out then it would not be the Amplified version. The Amplified version is one that is good for considering interpretation of Deity and for commentary on the Scriptures verses themselves. It would not be recommended for worship service use for the Scripture reading, however. This is all just my opinion of course. From the heart, Ray |

543 | Self control and Spirit controlled? | 1 Cor 9:25 | Ray | 52777
Hi 4me2liveisChrist, I can't find your other question right now, so I'll give you some thoughts here if you don't mind. My view of the Holy Spirit is that there is both the Holy Spirit and the holy spirit. For my mind, I think of the holy spirit when considering the filling. We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and Christ lives in us. But I say that there is the filling of the holy spirit. When I look at Ephesians 5:18 I do not get the idea of "control". The subjection and yielding to authority and the order of this authority is later on in the passage. For verse 18 I see not a Person, that is the Spirit, but I see a parallel to the idea of being drunk with wine. We are not to be filled with wine but rather with the spirit. Not filled with spirits, but with spirit. We are not to drink too much wine for that is debauchery. Rather be filled with spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Not only being filled with the words of the Scriptures, but applying them to your heart and singing and praising in your heart to the Lord. Colossians 1:16,"For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created by Him and for Him." We are to be filled with all the things of God. But I do not think that we can be filled up with God Himself. He is the Head of the church and we are subjected to Him and His authority. But the filling of God Himself is found in Colossians 1:19. "For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fulness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself,..." For Titus 3:6, I agree with the Greek in that it reads "which" instead of "whom". Thus, for the preceding verse there I would render it as "holy spirit". Tutus 3:5, "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the holy spirit, which He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,..." So I would have you consider the possibility of the holy spirit, a power, a word, and an influence as well as there being the Holy Spirit. We will not get drunk with this holy spirit but the filling should give us power for witness, praise, and thanksgiving for all things. Titus 1:14, "Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure [literally, good deposit] WHICH has been entrusted to you." From the heart, Ray |

544 | Was Jesus Christ the God of the Old Test | 1 Cor 10:4 | Ray | 41641
Hi Amie, Yes. Jesus Christ hasn't changed. He is the same today and forever. I agree with the Amplified and NKJ for 1 Cor. 10:4, "and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ." Besides the references given in the Amplified of Exod.17:6 and Numbers 20:11, my study bible gives Psalm 78:15. I see that verse as a contrast with 1 Corinthians in that the Rock, the Rock that was Christ is seen in Psalms 78 as splitting the rocks and bringing water from the rocks. Psalm 78:15,16, "He split the rocks in the wilderness, And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths. He brought forth streams also from the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers." Verse 10 starts with God and follows with a long string of the things that He did in His miracles. And how they refused to walk in His law. They had forgotten the works of God and did not keep His commandments. In Psalm 78:19 and 20 the people speak against God. "Then they spoke against God; They said, "Can (God) prepare a table in the wilderness? Behold, He struck the rock, so that water gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He [the Rock] give bread also? Will He [the Rock] provide meat...? Yes, I think that the Rock can give bread also for He is the Bread of life, the manna from heaven. Psalm 78:24, "And (He) rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them food from heaven." Psalm 78:32, "In spite of all this they still sinned, And did not believe in (His) wonderful works." Psalm 78:34,35, "When He killed them, then they sought Him, And returned and searched diligently for God; And they remembered that God was their *Rock/, and the Most High (God) their Redeemer." Psalm 78:38a, "But He/, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity, and did not destroy them." ***The capitalized *Rock of Psalm 78:35 is my interpretation because I like to be consistent in similar phrases like "their Rock" and "their Redeemer". I don't like to mix lower and upper cases in these cases. In contrast look at Psalm 18:30,31, "As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the (Lord) is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock [sic], except our God, The God/ who girds me with strength, And makes my way blameless?" Psalm 19:14, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart Be acceptable in Thy sight, O (Lord), my rock [sic] and my *redeemer." (See an early NASB copyright.) Psalm 18:46, "The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of my salvation..." From the heart, Ray |

545 | What does "because of the angels" mean ? | 1 Cor 11:10 | Ray | 96824
Hi Mommapbs, The angels are neither male nor female. I see the writer calling for a comparison here. We as flesh need to have a "head" or symbol of authority in order to operate effectively. The angels simply serve the Lord. I would translate the "because of the angels" thus: "as seen through the angels" or "when compared to the angels". 1) 1 Corinthians 11:7, "For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man." Colossians 3:10, "...according to the image of the One who created him..." 1 Cor 12:24b, "But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, that there should be no division in the body , but that the members should have the same care for one another." 2) 1 Cor 11:11, "However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman...all things originate from God." 1 Cor 12:27, "Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church... 3) 1 Cor 11:3, "But I want you to understand that Christ is the *Head of every man, and the man is the head [sic] of a woman, and God is the head [sic] of Christ." Colossians 2:19, NKJ, "and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit togeter by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God." 1 Corinthians 11:3, "...and God is the head of Christ." 546 | Relate act of Holy spirit in Act2,1cor12 | 1 Cor 12:6 | Ray | 93728
Hi bunmi, Thank you for your question and Scriptures to compare. Acts 2:11, "Cretans and Arabs--we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God." 1 Corinthians 12:6, "And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. God is Spirit, and there is one God, and one Lord, so I am not one to be concerned about the roles of the Persons of the Trinity. The gift in Acts 2 was the gift of speaking in tongues. The Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out. They were speaking of the spiritual things they had seen and heard. They were speaking of the mighty deeds of God. 1 Cor 12:11, "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills...24 But God has composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another." There is that blend of the Persons that we need to keep in mind. 1 Cor 12:3, "Therefore I make known to you, that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed", and no one can say "Jesus is Lord", except by the Holy Spirit." 547 | role of the HolySpirit in formation, grow | 1 Cor 12:6 | Ray | 93745
Hi bunmi, You don't know me, but I have been expressing on the forum lately about how I see the existence of the holy spirit [sic]. This holy spirit to my mind is what you have in mind when you ask "What is the role of the Holy Spirit [sic] as it [sic] affects each?" We speak of the Holy Spirit as "He". But I believe that the Scriptures speak of the spirit and the holy spirit as well. For instance, for Acts 2:17 I put the spirit in lower case. The spirit that was poured out is that which you both see and hear. Acts 2:33. We are filled with the holy spirit. We are filled with what we both see and hear. In Acts 2:4 the believers were filled with the holy spirit and spoke as the Spirit gave them ability. They spoke of the things that they had both seen and heard. They spoke of the mighty deeds of God. As we grow, we learn that there are a variety of gifts, ministries, and effects (1 Cor 12:4-6). The same Lord, the same God, is the same Spirit. Words of wisdom and knowledge are given by the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:7, "But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;" Acts 2:16, "but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: "And it shall be in the last days,' God says, 'That I will pour forth of My *spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;" So I see both the Spirit and the spirit in the Scriptures. We have received a spirit of adoption as sons and Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." From the heart, Ray |

Hi Sarah H, Have you considered the possibility that the Holy Spirit is the Lord Jesus? Have you considered the possibility that when Jesus baptized He baptized with holy spirit? Can we keep in mind that God is Spirit? 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 talks about the same Spirit, the same Lord, the same God who works all things in all persons. From the heart, Ray |

550 | Church sound system "way too loud" | 1 Cor 13:1 | Ray | 147773
Hi Kalos, Perhaps wearing the foam ear plugs until he can get the headphones on that the church supplies, would be a solution. However, sometimes disabilities do affect the ways that we can participate in activities. Perhaps he will have to accept the situation and be content with tapes of the services. He could combine the tapes with a weekly Bible study at the church in a quieter and smaller assembly of believers. From the heart, Ray |

551 | Meaning of "Praying with our Spirit" | 1 Cor 14:15 | Ray | 94073
Hi Kat bu, I would say that praying with our spirit doesn't necessarily mean praying in tongues. We should pray with our minds; then I think that we have the spirit of Christ. In regards to your title question and the capitalized Spirit: Jude 20 talks about praying in the Holy Spirit. Here we are to be building each other up in the faith, knowing the Spirit, and seeking the will of God. Ephesians 6:18 talks about praying at all times in the Spirit. Here again there is the concern for others and the will of God especially in understanding and proclaiming the gospel. 1) John 6:62, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." 2) The five words of edification and interpretation that Paul speaks with his mind are words of "spirit". 1 Corinthians 14:2, "...but in his spirit he speaks mysteries." Let us worship God and declare that God is among us. Let us test the spirits. Let all things be done for edification. From the heart, Ray |

554 | 1 Corinthians 14:22-25 misunderstanding | 1 Cor 14:25 | Ray | 122938
Hi johnclin, Welcome to the forum. You wrote that tongues was "(a sign that God is with them)." Actually, however, verse 24 says that if all prophecy then people are convicted, called to account, disclose their hearts secrets, and worship God. It is when the whole church "prophesies" that the unbeliever or the unversed in spiritual gifts recognizes that God is with them. Tongues are good for believers and unbelievers because the word of God is spoken. When the word is revealed, interpreted, and taught, then the things are done for edification and you have a good outcome. From the heart, Ray |

555 | Contradiction with 1 Cor 14:22 and 24 | 1 Cor 14:25 | Ray | 122962
Hi johnclin, I wouldn't call it a contradiction. I would say that the passage is placing more value on prophecy than on tongues if placed in a situation. If the whole church was speaking in tongues in one situation, and the whole church was prophesying in another situation, then the prophesying would have the better outcome than the tongues when unbelievers enter the respective services. But for the ideal situation, do all the things that will edify. Have the psalms sung, have the teaching done, do the informing about the program, preach the word, interpret the word. Don't get overenamoured with tongues, and always have an interpreter. What I get from the passage is that the tongues are for a sign, that is, they point someone to Christ. But when that someone comes into the church, they need to find God worthy of being worshiped and they need to be edified. They need to see that God is truly active among them. From the heart, Ray |

557 | did Jesus raise himself from the dead? | 1 Cor 15:21 | Ray | 4889
Hi, If you know who Jesus is then you know that the answer is yes. 1 Cor 15:15, "Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised." If you have witnessed Jesus, you know that He is God. He is Lord. He is the Holy One. 1 Cor 15:20, "But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive." By a Man also--so also in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Cor. 15:45,"The last Adam became a life-giving spirit...The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man." NKJ Jesus on the cross gave up His spirit, but He is also Spirit. See Rom 6:5, "For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection..." Verse 4 says "Christ was raised through the glory of the Father." Rom 8:10, And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the Spirit (Capital not NASB) is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies, through His Spirit who indwells you." So I would say that your John 2:19 passage was about the authority He has. I'm going to have to leave the NASB for verse 18, "So the Jews answered and said to Him, "What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?"NKJ Or, with a capital, "What sign do You show us as Your authority for doing these things?"NASB |

559 | What does 1 Corithians 15: 27-29 mean? | 1 Cor 15:29 | Ray | 67445
Hi FTM, Welcome to the forum. In the passage here it is difficult to assign a Person to each of the pronouns. But the bottom line is that God is all in all. Every capitalized pronoun in Scriptures makes the claim that Jesus is God to my mind. The idea of Jesus being the First-born is a relatively new study for me and I should wait on speaking to that. I hope that is helpful. Searcher has offered you some good Scriptures to compare. 1 Corinthians 15:23, "But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming, then comes the end, when He/ delivers up the kingdom to the God and Father, when (He) has abolished all rule and authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death. For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION TO (HIM). And when all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, that God/ may be all in all." Phillipians 2:5, "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who although *existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God/ a thing to be grasped, but *He emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a (Man), He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even the death on a cross. Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus/ EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth..." In my personal copy I have added another "One" to Philippians 2:13 for I believe that the Greek would have it. Philippians 2:13, "for God is the One who is at work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure...that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God/ above reproach...as lights in the world..." 560 | positive biblical reference for men | 1 Cor 16:14 | Ray | 104112
Hi Ron Hilton, Some women might say that the main characteristic of men is that they are quitters. They quit their marriages, their jobs, their responsibilities. When I read your question, 1 Samuel 4:9, KJ, came to mind, "Be strong, and quit yourselves like men...quit yourselves like men, and fight." I say that tongue-in-cheek for I know that "to quit yourselves" means to "act like, to play the part as men". So 1 Samuel 4:9 tells them to "take courage and be men," and 2 Samuel 10:12 tells us to "Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous." "Be strong" is a good characteristic of a man. 1 Corinthians 16:13 says "Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." But the bottom line I would think is verse 14, "Let all that you do be done in love." That is doing the Lord's work as Timothy and Paul were doing. 1 Corinthians 16:10-24. My love to you all. So its not, "Be strong and fight" but rather "Be strong and let all that you do be done in love." From the heart, Ray |
