421 | Further understanding of betrothal? | Matt 1:24 | Mommapbs | 31213
Greetings! I'm going to take a "common sense" stab at this one! Regardless of how "righteous" we assume others to be, there are no guarantees without proof. God provided this in the statement "he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son." Here's what I think the "proof was!" Although Scripture does not give the details, we could safely assume that Mary had at least a midwife in attendence at the birth of Jesus. Remember Bethlehem was full of people at the time, so it is very probable that there were other women available to assist this first-time mother! It would be physically obvious to Mary's birth attendents that she was a virgin. |

422 | Was Mary a virgin her whole life | Matt 1:25 | Mommapbs | 47458
The Amplified Version of Matthew 1:25 says, "But he had no union with her as her husband until she had borne her firstborn Son; and he called His name Jesus." From your earlier question, "Didn't Mary and Joseph have another child?", you now know that Jesus had "half" siblings. So the real question becomes: If this is so, HOW could Mary remain a virgin her whole life? As you are discovering, certain things we are told to be true have no foundation in the Word of God. Examine the Scriptures! God will reveal His Truth to you when you do! Blessings, Mommapbs |

423 | Did the Magi visit Bethlehem or Nazareth | Matt 2:9 | Mommapbs | 72908
Although Herod directed the Magi to go to Bethlehem, note what this verse says they did. The star led them to where the Child was. Matthew's account does not say that the star led them to Bethlehem does it? "We must obey God rather than men." Acts 5:29 Just an observation for you to consider. Blessings in your study of God's Word. mommapbs |

424 | ethical standards tauht by jesus | Matt 4:4 | Mommapbs | 76223
Greetings jack8mabc: Let me guess, this is a homework question! Jesus does not teach us ethical standards, for these are ways of making decisions that are determined by what man declares to be right or good. Jesus teaches us the WAY to live. "Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." The Word of God is THE standard! mommapbs PS: See also Mt 22:36-40. |

425 | meaning of hunger and thirst | Matt 5:6 | Mommapbs | 33435
As triune beings, created in the image of God, we have spiritual as well as physical needs. These are readily recognized and responded to, however, if we try to meet these needs apart from God, we will continue to "come up empty!" Jesus is called the bread of life, the living water and the righteousness of God. Only He can satisfy the needs of the human soul. Choose carefully from the menu of life! 426 | Christian Activism? | Matt 5:13 | Mommapbs | 109730
Greetings Hank! Great question. Should we "do whatever we can" or might this be better expressed as whatever God calls us to do? I think that recognizing the difference is important - without the sanction of God on out efforts, we are working on our own authority. What kind of effect should we expect from that? Many times, I see well meaning "Christians" grandstanding over issues that do nothing but garner negative media attention and result in a smearing of Christianity, in general. Am I afraid of the media, no of course not, but it does concern me when I see folks "take matters into their own hands" like James Kopp, who killed the husband of a woman I know. (Believe me, this has been a challenge for me. A wife has lost her husband and children have lost their father. I don't agree with abortion, but killing someone because he is exercizing his legal right to preform abortions is a heinous misappropriation of "justice.") God has allowed laws to be written and He may also allow for them to be repealed, but we must work THROUGH the system in submission to the authory that God has placed over us. Thankfully, our freedom of speech and our freedom to protest have not been taken away! As for me, I have not joined any picket-lines, but I do express my opposition to these, et al, when given an opportunity. (Eph 5:1-16.) I think that many believers are ignorant of their power source - greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4) - and as a result, they remain silent in the face of sin. (And silence is often interpresed as agreement. Sad.) A young man we knew was killed by a drunk driver. As a result, his parents have ACTIVELY campaigned for a change in the laws of NY to impose stiffer penalties for such offenses. God used a tragedy to get His people "in gear." Is this what it will continue to take to "wake us up?" I suspect that the syndrome of complacency has lulled many believers into such a deep slumber that they fail to hear the alarm ringing! BTW, the AFA did a great job in mobilizing God-fearing folks to ACT. Any other ideas that we might use to encourage one another to live as children of Light in this dark world? Blessings to you! mommapbs |

427 | Was Martin Luther King Jr. wrong? | Matt 5:13 | Mommapbs | 109765
Greetings Pastor Glenn - Martin Luther King Jr had a dream and he shared that dream with us; but would you say that we are any closer to realizing his dream today than when he first brought it to our attention? Is there more peace; is there more acceptance of others with differences today than there was then? (This is not just about race - neither was it for MLK.) And, one doesn't need to be a Christian to be a hypocrite. Anytime an individual (black, white or polka dotted) focuses on our differences rather than the similarities, he/she discriminates. Martin Luther King Jr 's vision for the world was one where peace reigned - and indeed, it will one Day! Certainly I am not "lumping the peaceful activists together with the evil unpeaceful ones," but our mission is to introduce others to the Prince of Peace. This is the "salt" and "light" we have that others need so desperately. Yet, I'm not sure that "Christian activism" is the best mode of its delivery. Blessings to you! mommapbs |

428 | degrees of heaven? | Matt 5:19 | Mommapbs | 51283
Greetings billk! The kingdom of Heaven will be full of joy for all because that is where God is.(Jude 1 :24 - Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,) We will ALL be MORE than satisfied in Heaven! However, recall the parable of the talents in Matthew 25. His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' v.23 I suspect that we will all have different responsibilities in the Kingdom of God and this is what Matthew 5:19 may be alluding to. Our earthly existence is a "training gound" of sorts for our future with the Lord. Even if it means that I am a but a "janitor for Jesus," better is one day in Your courts, oh Lord, than a thousand elsewhere! Blessing in Him, Mommapbs |

430 | adultrus marriage, a "marriage" in Gods | Matt 5:31 | Mommapbs | 93158
George - just an observation: how can there be a divorce if there is no marriage? A marriage, adulterous or otherwise is still a marriage. Don't you think that some might use this notion (not a marriage in God's eyes) as an excuse to dishonor the very relationship that God created and affirmed in the Garden? Now, for my two cents on the subject: Please consider Hosea, who married a whore, and this verse: Then the LORD said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes." Hosea 3:1 Were we not all adulterers, married to the world and yet God loved us and redeemed us? He forgave our unfaithfulness, how dare we not forgive those who are unfaithful to us? My opinion is, if the immoral partner chose not to repent I would say that divorce is justified. However, an ounce of prevention . . . As believers, if we CHOOSE to see our partner as God sees them, (deeply loved, completely forgiven, totally approved, accepted and reconciled as a new creature in Jesus) there would be less martital discord and hopefully less divorce as well. Perhaps this perspective might even be applied in our disagreements with other believers on the Forum too. What do you think? mommapbs |

431 | Does the text in 1Tim 3:12 mean what it | Matt 5:32 | Mommapbs | 108997
Greetings and welcome to the Forum. I have copied a post by Tim Moran, who's counsel I truly appreciate and look for on this Forum. You can also read through the discussion associated with this verse in Matthew by clicking on the link to the verse and then click on the "green n" beside the reference. Question: As a believer in Jesus Christ and still single, am I free (have the "liberty") to marry a divorced woman who also professes to be Saved by God's grace? Answer: Greetings Bigjim! You really need to address this issue with a local pastor. It is not really advisable to either counsel or receive counsel on an internet forum. There are too many personal factors which must be taken into consideration. Generally speaking, I know that I take the following approach as a pastor. 1) Was the divorce for legitimate reasons? Scripture allows divorce for adultry. If this were the case, I would say that you could marry her. 2) Was the divorce prior to her becoming a Christian? I don't 'count' things done before someone became a Christian. 3) Did she initiate the divorce? It is very easy to get a divorce these days. I don't hold divorce against someone who had no choice in the matter. Other than these three exceptions, I would say that marrying a divorced person is adultry. But, you really need to speak with a local pastor about such an important issue! If you don't have a local pastor, e-mail me (Morant62@hotmail.com) and I'll see if I can get you in touch with a good pastor. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran Mommpabs writes: see number 2 in Tim's advice. I suspect that this qualifies you for the position. Don't let the "legal beagles" rob you of what God has placed before you! Blessings, mommapbs |

432 | What should I do with my in-laws? | Matt 5:44 | Mommapbs | 24024
Best place to get answers is God's Word. Jesus said in Matthew 5:44, "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," I know this sounds simplistic considering the amount of "stuff" you have to deal with in these dysfunctional relationships but I can assure you, prayer works. You can not change another person's feelings or behaviors, but you can change the way that you respond t o them! From reading your family history, there is a lot of forgiveness that needs to be extended. Begin in your own heart. God commands us to love one another (not the things they do to us, etc), to forgive one another (even if they don't ask for it!) and pray for one another! You can't stay angry or mad at someone you bring before the Throne of Grace. Prayer will change you! I know, I speak from experience. It was VERY hard to confess my hatred and refusal to forgive those who didn't like me either, but the only person my anger was hurting was me. I was become more critical and bitter, certainly not a reflection of Jesus! Trusting in Him to work out the details, I got rid of those things and guess what happened? I was able to love them with a supernatural kind of love, forgiving them for things they didn't even know were hurting me, and I was able to behave and respond to them, inspite of their treatment of me, in a Christlike manner. Look again at what you have asked, and the details you have given. SOme serious healing is needed. Ask for yourself first. "Love the Lord your God. . . . and others as you love yourself." Hope this helps! Mommapbs
433 | No limit on what faith can do? | Matt 6:10 | Mommapbs | 83330
Greetings Radioman! I guess I am confused a bit with your question. In our earthly tent, how can faith be without limit? Isn't it rather the OBJECT of our faith that is without limit?! I agree with what you have presented and I commend to you Psalm 37:4 When we seek the Lord, or "delight" in Him, He promises to give us the desires of our heart. Now if HE GIVES the desires, whose are they? His, of course! Therefore, when we are obedient in this we will pray as you have quoted: "we won’t make improper requests. Also, we will be so in tune with God that we will be satisfied when His plans prove to be different than we hoped they would be." mommapbs PS: Thank you for your diligent posting. |

434 | Does God decide how long we live? | Matt 6:27 | Mommapbs | 28058
Matthew 6:27 "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Jer. 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jer. 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Having watched many children die from cancer, I can assure you that none of these little ones died in vain. God has used their brief life for His glory. There are no accidents, yet there are consequences. None are out of God's sight or control! Our future is Heaven - sometimes we get homesick - and you have an even greater reason! Ephesians 2:10, "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." After reading this verse, my son, while undergoing chemo at age 14, stated,"God has a plan for my life." When I asked him how he knew that he replied, "Because I'm still here; if your work for God is done, you should be happy to go home to Heaven!" (This was 7 years ago; he was miraculously healed! God does indeed have a purpose for his life, for mine and for yours - why? Because WE are still here!)Blessings to you and yours! |

436 | Apply this to my life? | Matt 6:33 | Mommapbs | 125320
"There are two kinds of people, those who say to God, "Thy will be done; and those to who God says, 'Thy will be done.'" C.S. Lewis (The Great Divorce) Sportyt - do read the notes on this verse! Also, I saw a great one liner on a church sign the other day that read: "GOOD without GOD is O" When we seek His kindgom and His way of doing things, Who will be at the "controls"? BUT - How often do we consider God in "our" plans? Read Mt 22:37 Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to "Love God." And yet, God can't make anyone love Him; loving God is a choice. When we choose to love God FIRST, everything else in our life will fall into its proper place. How do we love God? We obey; this pleases Him. He rejoices; He takes pleasure in our love; and the joy of the Lord is our strength! (especially when we encounter suffering for choosing His way! It is never wrong to do the right thing. We discover what is right and pleasing to God as we read His Word.) All this being said, I encourage you to seek His kingdom and His righeousness through careful study of God's Word! "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;" 2 Tim 3:16 Blessings, mommapbs |

437 | Words of life? | Matt 7:11 | Mommapbs | 98936

438 | Is "it" enough for you? | Matt 7:11 | Mommapbs | 99028
Ray - you are in my prayers.Having had a child in chemotherapy for two years, I have an idea of what it means to be "under the weather." With regard to John 13:17 - the first question I have is what "bread" is Jesus talking about? Since it is NOT capitalized, what is the significance? I can think of lots of possibilities, and these are mere speculations . . . but my strongest inclination is to carry this prophecy beyond Judas and into today as indeed there are those who have benefitted from Christianity and yet have rejected THE Bread . . . Just some things that I'll be pondering as well as thanking God for bringing this to YOUR attention! May you be comforted by His presence during this time. With Christ's love and prayer for you! mommapbs |

439 | Conversation With God? | Matt 7:16 | Mommapbs | 83385
Greetings Hank - "What does Scripture say about how God communicates with man and man with God?" I like Job 42: 1-7. Here we see examples of one who ASKS and listens to God for instruction and one who "speaks" for God.(v7) Which one was affirmed? In my opinion, I think that often our conversations with God are too one-sided. We may be diligent to pour through His Word and devote ourselves to prayer, but are we actively seeking to HEAR FROM HIM? Too often the plans we make are just a guess at what God has in mind. We see only part of the picture - kind of like looking at a wide-screen movie throught a stereo hand viewer! Secondly, I wonder if we are willing to receive His voice without preconceived notions of HOW He may speak? As for me, by virtue of my doctrinal training I believed that God's voice could only be heard through the study or reading of His Word, I struggled with doubt for far too long after I actually audibly heard His voice. After finally coming to accept that I had actually "heard" from Him, I began to see and recognize other ways that He was choosing to speak to me as well. He sure did get my attention in a dramatic way! In my experience, God has spoken directly to me in response to my prayer and yet at another time, He initiated the conversation and spoke when I was not expecting it. He has spoken to me about others, but unless He gives me a directive to share this with them, I would not utter what He has revealed. I think it is dangerous for anyone to speak without the authority of God. Yet, how often do we do just that! Most of my experience has been similar to the post by EdB. The Holy Spirit is alive and well and continues to function as our TEACHER!(John 14:26) Often He uses His Word to remind me of things or to direct my thinking. He also has used situations or circumstances; usually He teaches me through "object lessons." Perhaps my doubts still prevail in some form, for I am constantly wanting confirmation of what I believe God is saying. Frankly, I don't think that this is a bad thing as it does tend to keep us in check, fully dependent upon GOd to direct . . . During a recent illness, God's presence was very tangible. For just a brief period, He absolutely removed my pain - I felt as if His Hand was stretched out, moving over my body - it was truly an experience I can only attribute to Him as I was completely and unexplainedly at peace. Also during this time, God impresssed upon me the importance of (and need for) a healing ministry. 2 weeks later, in a book I was reading, God identified the healing that I was to focus upon; it was NOT PHYSICAL(as I had thought in Elihu fashion) but emotional and spiritual. Had I continued to presuppose what I THOUGHT GOD WAS SAYING, rather than to continue to ask Him to clarify His direction, I would have been working on my own effort rather than depending upon God. Now, as I pray about this and ask God to direct me, I confidently know that HE will open the doors and reveal His plans in HIS timing. In the meantime, I will contine to pursue Him with patient expectation. For me, this is a season of preparation. It has taken MANY years, and I am STILL in awe of how much more I don't know . . . slowly,I have learned to recognize His voice. Hopefully, my response time to Him will increase! My prayer is that you too would be open to hearing from God in ways that you might not expect! He loves to delight and surprise His children! God bless YOU! mommapbs |

440 | Healing powers of the false prophets? | Matt 7:22 | Mommapbs | 49633
Greetings www! You wrote:"I worry about many preachers, men of God, faith healers, etc. who have really come to believe they are anointed by the Lord and in fact may not be. That's a kind of fear that any Christian should be afraid. Any comments." Please read the following Scriptures: Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. 1 Cor 4:5 It is written:'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. Romans 14:11-13 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-14 Don't "worry" about THEM - just be sure that YOUR motives are pure and God-honoring! You don't have to give an account or answer to God for THEM, but you will have to give an account of what YOU have chosen! God's Word assures us that God will give each man according to what his deeds deserve. "I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve." Jer 17:10 And for those who lead others astray - woe unto them! Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him." Luke 17:1-3 I hope these words encourage your walk with the Lord, may He find YOU faithful at His appearing! Blessings in Jesus! Mommapbs |
