181 | Who produces miracles? | 1 Cor 12:10 | Michael Draves | 150292
Mark 9:38 John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us." Mark 9:39 But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. Mark 9:40 "For he who is not against us is for us. Matt 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Matt 7:22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' Matt 7:23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' Matt 12:25 And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand. Matt 12:26 "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? Matt 12:27 "If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges. Matt 12:28 "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 1 Cor 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1 Cor 12:5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 1 Cor 12:6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 1 Cor 12:7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Cor 12:8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 1 Cor 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 1 Cor 12:10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 1 Cor 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. Acts 8:9 Now there was a man named Simon, who formerly was practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great; Acts 8:10 and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, "This man is what is called the Great Power of God." Acts 8:11 And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts. Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. Acts 8:13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed. Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, Acts 8:15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 8:17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, Acts 8:19 saying, "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." Acts 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! Acts 8:21 "You have no part or portion in thisMatter, for your heart is not right before God. Acts 8:22 "Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. Acts 8:23 "For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity." Acts 8:24 But Simon answered and said, "Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me." |

Read the whole chapter. Did you make a vow to give something to God, that a levitical priest set a value on and now you want to keep. If so you could pay the value plus a fifth more or a 20 percent penalty to keep it. Do a search on the right for TITH and it will show the discussions on the tithe and tithing. |

184 | Why the switch to 'Cephas' in v.9? | Gal 2:9 | Michael Draves | 103706
There are no textual variants for Galatians 2:7 to 2:11 listed in UBS 3ed but Metzgers corresponding textual commentary shows variants on all the references in Galatians to the Aramaic 'Cephas' being switched to the Greek 'Peter' in the manuscripts the Textus Receptus follows. I would like to say that 2:9 is a listing of the leaders of the Jerusalem church as it would be commonly recited with James (the brother of Jesus) before Cephas/Peter as in Acts 15:15-20 but I don't have proof for that assertion. The use of 'Peter' in a writing by Paul is actually unusual though it is common in Acts. Galatians doesn't give a listing at the end of who was with Paul so we don't know if Luke was around. Only in Galatians 2:7,8 does Paul appear to actually use 'Peter'. In 1 Cor 1:12, 1 Cor 3:22, 1 Cor 9:5, 1 Cor 15:5, Gal 1:18, Gal 2:9, Gal 2:11 and Gal 2:14 say 'Cephas'. The reason may be for the way it sounds. Peter (Petros/Petrw) versus circumcision (peritomhs). James and Cephas and John (IakwBos kai Khfas kai Iwannhs).
185 | was kiss customary greeting v handshake | Gal 2:9 | Michael Draves | 160645
A kiss appears to be a common greeting rather than a handshake but maybe someone else can explain what the "right hand of fellowship" spoke of in Galatians 2:9 was. Luke 7:45 "You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. Acts 20:37 And they began to weep aloud and embraced Paul, and repeatedly kissed him, Rom 16:16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. Cor 16:20 All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. Cor 13:12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. Thess 5:26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. Pet 5:14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ. Gal 2:9 and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. |

186 | No benefit from Christ if circumsised? | Gal 5:2 | Michael Draves | 150807
In context you can see that he doesn't view circumcision itself as meaning anything. The usual intent of chosing to be circumcised would be to follow the law which is impossible for us to do so we can't be justified by following the law. Paul himself circumcised Timothy and possibly Titus. Acts 16:1 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek, Acts 16:2 and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium. Acts 16:3 Paul wanted this man to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. Gal 2:3 But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. Gal 2:4 But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. Gal 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. Gal 5:2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Gal 5:3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. Gal 5:4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. Gal 5:5 For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love. |

189 | r armor-bearers n use today? | Eph 6:11 | Michael Draves | 159072
Are you asking about physical or spiritual armor? You can do a search on armor bearer and find all the physical occurances in the Old Testament. There may even be one reference in the New Testament of being forced to be a armor-bearer: Matt 5:41 "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. If you are talking about spiritual every one is to put on the full armor of God (Eph 6:11) themselves. Could someone with the gift of helps (1 Cor 12:28) be considered an armor bearer? |

191 | In Him? | Col 1:14 | Michael Draves | 149522
The Greek manuscripts of Colosians 1:14 having "through his blood" are 614 from the 13th century, 630 from the 14th century and 2464 from the 10th century. It is also supported by the Clementine version of the latin vulgate in 1592. Where is it in any early Greek manuscript? The goal of textual criticsm is to try to establish what was in the original manuscripts rather than what should be. This may have been inserted by a scribe familiar with the similar verse in Ephesians.
192 | Name the three comings of the Lord? | 1 Thess 4:16 | Michael Draves | 150484
Which of your 3 are among the following 6 events? Gen 18:1 Now the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. Gen 18:2 When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth, Dan 3:24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astounded and stood up in haste; he said to his high officials, "Was it not three men we cast bound into the midst of the fire?" They replied to the king, "Certainly, O king." Dan 3:25 He said, "Look! I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!" Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; Luke 2:11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:12 "This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." John 20:15 Jesus *said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she *said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." John 20:16 Jesus *said to her, "Mary!" She turned and *said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher). John 20:17 Jesus *said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'" 1 Thess 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Rev 21:2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. Rev 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, Rev 21:4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." Rev 21:5 And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." And He *said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." |

193 | what does the bible say about working? | 2 Thess 3:10 | Michael Draves | 159068
Gen 3:17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it'; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. Prov 6:6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and be wise, Prov 6:7 Which, having no chief, Officer or ruler, Prov 6:8 Prepares her food in the summer And gathers her provision in the harvest. Prov 6:9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? Prov 6:10 "A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest"-- Prov 6:11 Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man. Eccl 5:18 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat, to drink and enjoy oneself in all one's labor in which he toils under the sun during the few years of his life which God has given him; for this is his reward. Matt 6:24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Matt 6:25 "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Matt 6:26 "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? Matt 6:27 "And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? Matt 6:28 "And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, Matt 6:29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. Matt 6:30 "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Matt 6:31 "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?' Matt 6:32 "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. Matt 6:33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matt 6:34 "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. 2 Thess 3:10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. |

195 | Who Was John Mark according to Paul? | 2 Tim 4:11 | Michael Draves | 152104
Paul acted like Mark was useless after Mark abandoned a missionary journey but later calls Mark a useful fellow worker. Acts 15:37 Barnabas wanted to take John, called Mark, along with them also. Acts 15:38 But Paul kept insisting that they should not take him along who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. Acts 15:39 And there occurred such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus. 2 Tim 4:11 Only Luke is with me. Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service. Philem 1:24 as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow workers. |

197 | where does any book say that | Hebrews | Michael Draves | 226164
A Christian point of view is probably going to point to Romans 11. You might ask someone Jewish and they might tell you that signs of the Messianic age have not happened. They might also tell you they are more troubled by the claims of divinity rather than Messiahship. Romans 11:25 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; Isaiah 11:6 And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. |

199 | If you are reviled IN the name of Christ | 1 Pet 4:14 | Michael Draves | 148667
Metzger's textual commentary indicates that it is possible the words were accidently omitted because of jumping from one -etai ending to another but the commitee thought it was more likely an addition refering to the spirit of glory. I think the verse sounds like a paraphrase of the last Beatitude in Matt 5:11 or Luke 6:22-23. I don't really think capitalization in Greek is that big of a deal. This could have been a note written in a margin that a scribe copied in with the main text. Metzger says in "Manuscripts of the Greek Bible" that capitals are used for inscriptions. That more curved uncials writing developed from capitals and then a form of cursive called miniscule developed.
200 | Is the KJV Only position wrong? | 1 John 5:8 | Michael Draves | 99783
The KJV is a good Bible for its time. It doesn't reflect texts that were not available to Erasmus such as the oldest papyrii from Egypt nor the Dead Sea Scrolls. 1 John 5:8 in the KJV has a reference to the Trinity that only occurs in very late manuscripts. The only argument I have heard and I consider valid for any superiority is some distinguishing between plural and singular that current usage of 'you' doesn't give.
