321 | Do we have a flawed New Testament? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Lionstrong | 7947
Greetings, Hank; Please don't misunderstand me when I say this, because I speak as one who believes that the whole Bible is God's Word, inerrant, infallible, eternal truth. But regarding _all_ that Paul taught we do not know, because all that he taught as he traveled on his missionary journeys is not recorded in Scripture. But what is important is that what God inspired him to write to the churches is without error. The New Testament "in its original autographs" is flawless in all that it teaches. |

322 | Paul's teaching: Inerrant or Fallible? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Lionstrong | 7951
Greetings, Hank; Yes, Hank, but, it must be quickly added, _just_ the possibility,... because all we know of what Paul taught is what God, infallibly, inspired him to write (and say as recorded in acts) in the Scripture. We have no way of knowing everything he said. We're just thankful that "all Scripture is inspired by God" including Paul's and is for that reason infallible. It is interesting to note that Paul subjected the Gospel he preach to the scrutiny of the other apostles "for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain." Gal. 2:2 I guess another way of saying this is that apostleship does not imply sinlessness. Peter in Galatians is an example. What we affirm is that what God inspired the writers of Scripture to write is infallible, not that the writer himself never made mistakes in all his life. But this possibility, to return to your questions, is only worth consideration in terms of careful thinking. The liberal theologians use Paul's (and all the Bible writer's) humanity to deny the infallibility of Scripture. But like Jeus said about the liberals in his day, "(They) are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God. (Matt 22:29) The power of God is almighty. So he can take an educated Pharasee or an uneducated fisherman and so control their thoughts to give us truths without error in writing. So, a writer's humanity cannot be used to deny that God's Word through Paul is infallible. |

323 | Paul's extra-biblical teaching inerrant? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Lionstrong | 8069
Greetings, Steve; ......... What do you mean by "extra-biblical"? Do you mean different doctrines that are not taught in Scripture? I don't believe Paul taught anything beyond what Spriture teaches. What He did do, however, was teach God's people "the whole purpose of God" according to Acts 20:27. ......... Your statement, "But, Paul and others taught other things that were not recorded in God's Word" can be taken to mean that the apostles taught different doctrines than those found in Scripture. This notion is unfounded and must be false. In his Word, God has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. Pet 1:3 ....................... I think I know what you meant to say when you wrote, "so we cannot say what his errors were." What you wrote says that Paul did if fact make mistakes in his teaching, but we just don't know what they were. Your wording here is unfortunate. ........ Since Paul and the other apostles were redeemed just like us, they were capable of mistakes, as Peter's mistakes were recorded in Galatians. Outside the infallable Word, all we concede is only the possiblity of mistakes and not the actuallity. ............. So, on the one hand we're not claiming sinlessness for the apostles as the Roman Catholics have done with Mary, and on the other we maintain the infallibility of God's inspired Word. |

324 | Can we figure out God's Truth | 2 Tim 3:16 | Lionstrong | 47379
Dear Arnie, Yes, we can figure out God's Truth from the Bible by our selves. But KNOWING God's truth will not save us from the wrath of God. Knowing is not the same as believing. It's only by believing God's truth that saves us. And FAITH (believing) is the gift of God. We cannot get faith by our selves (Ephesians 2:8,9). The wrath of God is revealed against people who know the truth about God, but who do not honor God although they know the truth about him, but rather they hold or suppress that truth in unrighteousness. (Rom 1:18 and following) I know some believers think that an unbeliever can't understand the Bible or the preaching of the Word without the illumination of the Holy Spirit. But it is knowledge that makes us accountable to God not free will. The Pharasees very well understood what Jesus was preaching. That's why their condemnation was greater. Not only were they self-righteous, but they understood the claims of Christ and did not believe. Knowledge is the prerequisite to faith (Rom 10:9FF). God made man in his image, that is, with a reasonable soul. With these reasonable souls we can think, understand and learn and love. Our fallen nature does not keep us from knowing and learning the truth. It keeps us from handling the truth properly. In our fallen state we hold the truth in unrighteousness. It's not that we haven't learned it. So the problem is sin, not knowledge. Sin keeps us from believing and handling the truth rightly; it does not always keep us from learning it, although sometimes, maybe often, it does. Only Jesus can save his people from their sins. (Mat. 1:21) He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. (Heb 12:2) Peace, |

325 | "desirable though wrong" and Jesus? | Heb 4:15 | Lionstrong | 5272
I agree. Poor wording. Jesus could not have an evil desire. In Jesus' case, his desires would have to be legitimate, like his desire for food after forty days of fasting. Temptation has to be defined to take in both illegitimate and legitimate desires. In Jesus' case Satan's temptation was for Jesus to fulfill his legitimate desires illegitimately. Thanks, RWC Your comments, observations, criticisms are welcomed. Lionstrong |

326 | Obedience a choice? | Heb 5:8 | Lionstrong | 149536
He Learned from Things He Suffered This is our example of growing in obedience! As a true man Christ was ignorant, that is, he could learn because he didn't know everything. As a true man he could learn to obey God more. Now, for me it is a move from disobeying more and obeying less to disobeying less and obeying more; for Christ it was a matter of going from obedience to more obedience. If the Sinless One had to learn odedience from the things he suffered, how much more us saved sinners!? |

327 | Hebrews 6:4 | Heb 6:4 | Lionstrong | 14592
Dear Ren333, You're right to believe that those whom an almighty God has saved, he keeps, because this is indeed what His word assures us is the case. And you are also right in applying that wonderful truth to this passage of God's Word. Having eliminated what it does not and cannot mean, one is one step closer to finding out what it in fact does mean. I appreciate Tim’s honesty in mentioning his theological persuasion. The forum is not united theologically. It is made up of Christians of various theological stripes. So you yourself must decide whether any given answer squares with the Word of God. As a Christian, I grew up among those who taught “once saved, always saved.” I believe this is biblical and consistent with the biblical view that God is almighty, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2). The label attached to my theological persuasion is Reformed. So this passage cannot be talking about a true believer, but about someone who was a “church goer”. But believers should take this passages to heart, and examine themselves. God is holy, and the design of any warning against sin and unbelief is never to leave a believer comfortable in sin and to spur him on to love and good works and the pursuit of sanctification without which no one will see the Lord (Heb. 10:24; 12:14) Peace, Lionstrong |

328 | Define Faith. | Heb 11:1 | Lionstrong | 12564
Dear Netta, Like Paul's description of the nature of love in his letter to the Corinthians, the passage in Hebrews is about the nature of faith. It is not a definition of faith just a Paul's description was not a definition of love. First, one somewhat confusing issue is English. It's easier to see in Greek. Faith is the noun form of the verb believe. So faith is either the act of believing or the object of what is believed. To believe means to accept as true an understood proposition (statement). And saving faith is to accept as true the understood propositions of God as revealed in the Scriptures concerning the redemptive work of Christ. Acts 16:30 and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Acts 16:31 They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." Peace, Lionstrong |

329 | Where is faith from? | Heb 11:1 | Lionstrong | 51767
Dear Charis, As I said elsewhere, Heb. 11:1 is not a definition of faith, but I won't rehash that here. To respond to your question, faith comes from God. It is His gift. It is not something we get apart from His operation in our hearts. We were dead in sin, and He had to make us alive, that is, give us new hearts (regeneration) capable of believing His word, and then He gave us faith in His word. In ourselves we were incapable of believing the Gospel. The gift of faith is attributed to the work each member of the Trinity: the Father: Rom 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; Eph 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. The Son: Heb. 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. And the Holy Spirit: John 16:8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; Is it the same for all believers? The content of what God has given us to believe is the same (Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,). How much of what God has given that we believe varies; He’s given to each "a measure of faith." Jesus emphasizes that we can't use how little faith we have as an excuse for not doing great things, but in so saying he is affirming that we can have varying amounts of faith. Matt 17:20 And He *said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Can we receive more? Yes! It's called God's work of sanctification. Abraham is a good example: Rom 4:19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb; Rom 4:20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, Rom 4:21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 330 | Falling to Temptation is Being Deceived | James 1:14 | Lionstrong | 229455
Perhaps Lundgaard does not mean that to be tempted is to be deceived but that to yield to temptation is to be deceived. The statement that "to be tempted and to be deceived are the same thing" is false, because Christ was not deceived though he was "tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin." Heb 4:15. I understand that Scripture teaches that sin is deceitful: Rom 7:11, "for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me," but I find nowhere it saying that temptation is deceitful or to be tempted is to be deceived. Adam sinned (and plunged us into ruin) but he was not deceived. 1 Tim 2:14, "And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression." Eve was deceived but was Adam tempted? If he was tempted we have another example of temptation without deception. |

Ps 148:1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights! Ps 148:2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! Ps 148:3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light! Ps 148:4 Praise Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens! Ps 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created. Ps 148:6 He has also established them forever and ever; He has made a decree which will not pass away. Ps 148:7 Praise the LORD from the earth, Sea monsters and all deeps; Ps 148:8 Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind, fulfilling His word; Ps 148:9 Mountains and all hills; Fruit trees and all cedars; Ps 148:10 Beasts and all cattle; Creeping things and winged fowl; Ps 148:11 Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; Ps 148:12 Both young men and virgins; Old men and children. Ps 148:13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven. Ps 148:14 And He has lifted up a horn for His people, Praise for all His godly ones; Even for the sons of Israel, a people near to Him. Praise the LORD! Hi Ashley! And Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Generally speaking spirit and soul in the Bible mean the same thing. Animal souls are non-rational. Therefore they cannot literally worship God. Worship requires a rational mind. Because man is made in the image of God, his soul is rational, and therefore capable of and morally responsible for worship. (Gen. 1:26, 2:7 Ex 20:4-6) But God made all things through Christ for his own glory, therefore all things praise God in their own way. (Rom. 11:36, Ps. 148) Back to soul and spirit. They both mean the inner, non-physical part of man. (Mat 10:28) This inner man is the person and lives on after physical death, either with the Lord Jesus or waiting in hell till judgement day. (2 Cor 5:6-8, Phil 1:20-23) At the resurrection body and soul will be reunited. (Acts 24:15) Those acquitted of the guilt of their sins by the blood of Christ will forever be with the Lord. (1 Thess. 4:14-17) Those whose names are not found in the book of life will be thrown body and soul into the lake of fire. (Mat 10:28, Rev 20:13-15) Final note: The Forum is made up of many people who call themselves Christians. We represent many points of view here. So you must be like the noble-minded believers of Berea and check out what we say with Scripture to see if those things are so. (Act 17:10,11) Peace, |

332 | Does Jesus still heal? | James 5:14 | Lionstrong | 9570
Greetings, Anne: James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; James 5:15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. Notice, "the Lord will raise him up." |

333 | How can we influence who is saved? | 1 Pet 2:9 | Lionstrong | 4035
Hi Dud M3! Let me add my theological two cents in trying to answer your question. I believe God has chosen His elect in Christ, so I've thought about evangelism in this context. My answer partly echoes yours and that is God commands it and that's enough. But fortunately God does not leave us with His command to evangelize (which again is reason enough), but His given us some reason for the command to evangelise. Twally in the above tree gives a reference, but I think it's helpful to quote it:(especially v. 14) Rom 10:13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." Rom 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? Rom 10:15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!" Rom 10:16 However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?" Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. And also this reference: Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Rom 8:29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; Rom 8:30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. OK, my point and my answer, as I understand and believe God's word: Q. 1 If God in his wisdom has already chosen those whom will be saved, then, what is the point of sharing the Gospel with others? A.1 God has not only ordained the end (in this case the salvation of the elect), but He has also ordained the means to that end (the call, the preaching-evangelizing-in which that call is given, the hearing, the justifying, the glorification). This makes our evangelism necessary, and we should be happy that God has ordained use us, even though we're weak jars of clay. Q.2. "Why bother? Some will be saved, some won't, I can't change what God has preordained." A.2 Same as A.1, but let me add a negative. Not only will we miss an opportunity to be an instrument in someone's salvation, but as we do not warn others of the wrath to come, we will be held accoutable. No you can't change what God has ordained, but you can be a wonderful part of it! Q.3 ought I find inspiration in that thought? A.3 Yes! As God has ordained the elect to salvation, then He has ordained success in evangelism! So you can get out there and share the gospel with confidence in an almighty and loving God. Thanks for the question, Dud M3. In Christ, Lionstrong. |

334 | Apologetics for every Christian? | 1 Pet 3:15 | Lionstrong | 8828
Greetings, Nolan Although one would expect those gifted as evangelists (Ehp 4:11) to be more adept in apologetics, Peter's letter is general and addressed to all God's people. As such, we're all to "sanctify Christ as Lord in (our) hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks (us) to give an account for the hope that is in (us), yet with gentleness and reverence." However, to answer your question: No, there's no command that we all be directly involved in this good work. But we should all have an answer (defense) for those who ask what is the reason for our optimism, that is, our hope of eternal life, our hope of eternal bliss in the presence of God, our hope even in the midst of suffering and loss of loved ones, our hope of the resurrection and glory, our hope in Christ our Savior. Also, it cannot be overemphasized that our answer to those who ask should not be harsh or curt, but gentle and reverent. |

Sundrop: regarding Blaze's answer. Someone's been watching too much TV. There's no biblical evidence for God turning angles into men. And that last bit of alphabetical mumbo-jumbo is game playing with the Scriptures. But the biblical evidence given for the salvation of our first parents was good. And, by the way, I Pet. 3:18 is one of my favorite verses:) Lionstrong. |

336 | Those who died before Jesus' death | 1 Pet 3:18 | Lionstrong | 138641
People before Christ are not saved by believing in Jesus by name. They did not have to know that their Savoir's name was Jesus, and they did not know. People before Christ are saved the same way as those after Christ. They were saved by grace through faith. Those before Christ looked forward to the Messiah God would send, those after Christ look back to the Messiah God sent. Here is some Scriptures that make these points: Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel." Deut 18:15 "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. Deut 18:16 "This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.' Deut 18:17 "The LORD said to me, 'They have spoken well. Deut 18:18 'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. Deut 18:19 'It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him John 1:45 Philip *found Nathanael and *said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Gen 15:6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. Rom 4:1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? Rom 4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. Rom 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." Rom 4:4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. Rom 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, Gen 22:14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it will be provided." John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." Job 19:25 "As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth. Job 19:26 "Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God; Ps 23:6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Is 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Is 9:7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. There are many other verses that teach that people before Christ were saved without knowing Jesus' name. They knew God would send a Redeemer, and believed and were saved. |

Getting back to your proposal of referencing no other verse but the one under consideration: Why can't the verse be understood this way: since the "our" must refer to John and the recipients of his letter, and since they are not the only believers in the whole world, why can't he be referring to believers in the whole world? ("...not only the sins of us (believers), but (believers) of the whole world.") If one does not bring in other verses, be they of the unlimited or limited atonement interpretation, why can't the verse be understood this way? |
