181 | Questions about Paul? | Rom 3:23 | Jesusman | 190815
One thing that you need to keep in mind about Paul was that he was the first century version of a lawyer. He was also quite possibly the most well educated man in the first century, or among the most educated. When you read his epistles, especially Roman, Ephesians, and Galatians, you see how legalistic and precise he can be. He uses alot of legal terms and descriptions, and his analogies are things that can be proven in a court of law, like his analogy of the Runner who trains. It's a good idea to keep such things in mind when studying Paul's epistles. 2) Law I started here because clarifying this helps set a foundation of Paul's beliefs of the other 3. When Paul speaks of the Law, in most cases, he is speaking about the Laws of God that was recorded by Moses. There are cases where he is referring to the Laws of the land, such as when he points out his roman citizenship. There are instances where he refers to a person's own judgements and preconceptions as a law. Romans chapter 2 is one of Paul's largest sections on what the Law is. He refers to the Laws of Moses, and how when a person, be they jew or greek, is effected by the Laws of Moses. He also makes a clear distinction between the "Letter" of the Law and the "Spirit" of the Law, and how all of mankind are judged by one or the other, depending on if the Law was presented to them or not. 1) Sin Sin is more than not obeying God's Law. The Law, as Paul points out in Romans 2, was never intended to Save mankind from the dangers of sin, but rather to show everyone what God has set as a standard of "perfection". Paul even points out that the Law is near impossible to follow 100 percent correctly 24/7. That at some point in your life, you "WILL" transgress the laws of God. Sin, as Paul points out, is a state of Man. He calls it the "old man" in one place. It is so much a part of who you are prior to salvation, that it is near inseparable except with the power of God. So, sin, according to Paul, is not simply breaking the law, but rather who you are before salvation. 3) Faith Faith, according to Paul, is the means on our behalf by which Salvation is made possible. Paul makes a solid case that salvation is only possible by both God and Man working together. God takes the initiative and displays his power and mercy on those sinful people who display the believing faith in him. It's the start of a building relationship that forms between God and man. We are saved by the Grace of God, as Paul says in Ephesians 2. That Grace is bestowed upon us through the channel that is formed from our believing Faith in Jesus Christ. Paul goes on to say that salvation is a gift from God, only possible through him. 4) Justification by Faith Because of our sinful state, we are little more than criminals, reguardless of how good we try and obey the Law. By all records, guides, and status symbols and the like, we all deserve the death penalty immediately. However, because of the possibility of salvation by the Grace of God through the channel of Faith, our sinful state is removed. Paul describes this as taking off the "Old man" and putting on the "New Man". With this "new Man", we have a new status before God, that of being Justified .. or by our legal terms today, we are aquitted of all past wrong doings and found innocent. Paul makes it sound that Faith not only provides a channel by which God's Grace reaches us for Salvation, but also a means by which the punishment endured by Jesus christ can be applied to our sinful state. Meaning, our Faith in Jesus christ also allows God to apply the punishment endured by Jesus, his death on the cross, as the proper punishment for our sinful state. This allows us to continue to live on, building the relationship with God, innocent of all past evils. God found a means to be able to pay for sin. Jesus dying on the cross was a blanket punishment that each of us individually deserve to endure. However, by the means of God's grace, through our Faith, the punishment that we deserve to pay is automatically halted and the death of Jesus christ is applied in it's place. This entire message being written and read here now can be summed up by one simple and single word ... Mercy. Jesus loves you, Jesusman |

182 | what do you understand by this verse | Rom 6:15 | Jesusman | 106205
Hello, Under the Law, the only way to be declared justified is to follow the Law exactly, and precisely. Which, by the way, is impossible. Under Grace, however, one is justified through their faith in Jesus Christ and God. There isn't the strict adherence that is demanded by the Law. As a result, the belief circulated, which is still believed today, that you can be a christian, live like the devil, and still be saved. Paul, in his own unique way, is saying that that isn't so. Because you're not under the authority of the Law does not mean you can live like the devil. On the contrary, it means that you must live as one who belongs to christ. Paul goes into this in detail further in Romans. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

183 | Life span, why not in the 100's now? | Rom 6:23 | Jesusman | 198436
You might also look at genesis 6:3. God declares that Man will only live for 120 years. This comes to pass with Abraham. From Noah to Abraham, Man's lifespan drastically reduces. Jesusman |

184 | Can a man know God without a Bible? | Rom 10:17 | Jesusman | 41995
Hello, I'd have to say yes to this question. In Romans 2:12-16, Paul deals with a similar question. In this case, He is dealing with the Law. Up until Paul's time, the Jews kept the Law all to themselves. The gentiles were excluded from knowing it. That wasn't God's intentions. As a result, Paul says this in verse 14, Those who do not have the Law, yet instinctively do that which is in the Law, their actions become a law unto themselves. Now, while this is dealing with God's judgement in sin rather than the application of Grace, I think the same principle applies. Romans 1:18-32 teaches that God has revealed himself to all of mankind. As a result, man has no excuse before God. This is basically referring to general revelation or God's revelation through natural means. It also is believed that such revelation is non saving. However, God is still revealing himself. Besides, with his power, he can make himself known to any he choses, saving or otherwise. Jesusman |

185 | catholic church.......first church? | Rom 16:4 | Jesusman | 35022
Hello, The Catholic Church of today is not, nor cannot be the same Church which Christ himself began. First off, let's look at a few Roman Catholic doctrines. Before we dive into this area, it is important to note that many of the Roman Catholic doctrines aren't visible in many of the early church's writings. For example, the Roman Catholics place a strong belief and worship of Mary. My question is this. If we were to pray to Mary, then why didn't the Apostles and the Early Church Fathers? You will find that many of the Roman Catholic Doctrines of Today are not seen in Christian documents until well after 300 AD, after Constantine's acknowledgement of the Christian Church. The Roman Catholics claim that the are the Church that never changes, yet they change their doctrines several times a century. One of the Doctrines that isn't viewed in the Bible, the Old and New Testament, is the Papacy. According to the Catholic Church, Peter was the First Pope, in accordance to Jesus' statement "upon this rock, I will build my church," and "peter" meaning "rock" in Greek. However, if you look all throughout the New Testament, Peter is never viewed as the head of the Church. He is viewed as a leader, yes, but not "The Head" of the Church. In fact, if Peter was the Head of the Church, and as "infallible" as the Catholic doctrine teaches, then why does Paul confront Peter? Also, why does Peter refer to Paul's writings as Scripture and not his own as Scripture as well? You see my point? The Roman Catholic Church of Today isn't the same one which Jesus began back with the Diciples. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

186 | Speaking in Tongues and filled with Holy | 1 Corinthians | Jesusman | 62336
In my honest opinion? Not much. To me, it only means that you have been blessed with the gift of tongues. First, let's identify what is meant by "Tongues". Are we speaking about the ability to communicate with others of different languages coherently or speaking some undeterminable gopplygook that no one understands? If the former, then by all means use your gift to spread the word of God to people of all nations and languages. If the latter, then be cautious. You don't need to speak in an unknown tongue just to prove to others that the Holy Spirit is with you. The Bible never supports that. It does say that through the Holy Spirit, one can perform amazing tasks. We call them: The Gifts of the Spirit. Each person has been blessed with a unique gift. Each person has a different task to perfom. If every one had the same gift, then there would be only one duty to perform. Paul, however, teaches differently. My advise to you is to pray hard, examine the Bible thuroughly, and use your gift for the blessing of the Church. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

187 | sharing our faith to unbelievers so hard | 1 Cor 1:18 | Jesusman | 199402
Greetings, It's ironic that someone posted this type of question. Cause I'm going to be giving a lesson on witnessing at a local Bible bookstore on friday. There are many mistakes that the average christian does while witnessing that will unknowingly push away a non-believer. The most common is simply not being able to answer their questions. I have come across alot of unbelievers who present these so called "contraditions", many of which can be explained by simply reading the context of the passage. The first thing every christian should learn to do, is not simply read the Bible, but to read and study in the context of scripture. Context is king. The second mistake often made is using what I call "churchese" language. The unbeliever won't understand "Take Jesus into your heart" or "Sinners will go to hell". Instead, try to filter out this form of speech and use secular terms where possible. The third common mistake is to assume that terms mean the same thing for everyone. Just because a person says they are a christian does not mean they have a saving faith in Christ, but rather they are not buddist, jewish, nor muslim. Going to a christian church no more makes you a christian than walking into a garage makes you a chevy. Finally, the average christian doesn't research biblical history. The Bible makes many bold claims of historical, and scientific importance that have been proven true over and over again. Knowing some of these will help shed doubt on the secular claims that the bible is nothing more than a book of myth. Supporting the idea that the Bible is true historically and scientifically will aid in supporting it spiritually. Jesusman |

188 | Can sin enter heaven? | 1 Cor 6:9 | Jesusman | 70583
Common sense would tell you, "No." Think about it. What is God? He is all pure, holy, righteous, and just. Correct? What is the opposite of that? Sin. Correct? God hates sin. That is told to us time and time again throughout the Bible. Why would God go through the trouble of separating the Sinners and Saved, send his son to save us from our sins, prepare a place for both the Sinner to spend in punishment and the Saved to spend in reward, only to allow sin to enter heaven? Seems a bit stupid, don't you think? All that trouble only to allow sin into heaven anyway. Paul tells us perfectly all throughout his epistles, "The Unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God." 189 | why do singles think they need a mate? | 1 Cor 7:32 | Jesusman | 199196
As a single man and preacher in search of a church, I have come across a misunderstanding that preachers must be the husband of one wife .. they can't be single, or remarried .. and if you are single, they try and marry you off. You find this a common thought in some small baptist churches. Jesusman |

190 | 1 cor 12:23. what does it mean to a teen | 1 Cor 12:23 | Jesusman | 195209
Greetings, This is Paul's discussion of the Body. He's using the analogy of the human body to explain the church, and the roles each christian plays within the church. He just finished explaining how the body needs different parts in order to function as a whole. A body that has all eyes, won't be able to hear, smell, touch, or even speak. Each part of the body is dependant upon the other parts of the body. Now, beginning in verse 22, Paul switches gears slightly. Now, he's focusing on the individual purposes of the parts of the body rather than the dependancy. There are certain roles with in the church that seem the more desirable and honorable. On the contrary, there are some that are not so glammorous. Being the pastor of a church seems like a very nice and prestigeous role to play. However, being the Church's janitor is not as desirable, yet it needs to be done. What Paul is saying here, is that the percieved "less honorable" roles within the church should be just as honored and respected as the most prestigeous role within the church. Paul is making a solid argument that there should be no jealousy or division within the church. You shouldn't be wanting to be in another position of the church, but rather performing the role christ placed you in. Jesusman |

191 | Can true Christians lose their faith? | 2 Cor 4:4 | Jesusman | 88259
Hello, First off, If you're wondering if a christian can lose their salvation, the answer is no. The issue then becomes, Were they even saved to begin with? Remember Jesus' Parable of the four soils. The sower came and scattered seads on the various soils. One being shallow, rocky ground. The seed did indeed take root, and grew for a while, but when the trials of life came, the plant withered and died. Why? It did not have the root needed to survive. In this parable, it is not becoming a plant that indicates that you are a christian. It's how strong your roots are and how deep they go. So, my answer is that these people who have seemingly rejected their faith weren't saved to begin with. As Hank Henegraff would put it, They had a "Said" faith, not a "Real" Faith. Jesus Loves You! 192 | Internal or expressed thoughts | 2 Cor 10:5 | Jesusman | 37351
Hello, Paul is talking about Spiritual Warfare. The idea he is presenting is that we are in a constant war with evil. It isn't a war of weapons for prestige or territory. It is a war of the spirit. It is our duty as God's soldiers to raise up against all things ungodly. In this particular verse, Paul is referring to the thoughts we face. He is refering to thoughts as you would to a POW or an enemy soldier. The point that Paul is trying to make is that we should govern our thoughts to be in accordance to God's will, and omit those thoughts which go against God's will. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

193 | what is the real love in the word of God | 2 Cor 10:5 | Jesusman | 37812
Hello, The true love in the Word of God is God himself. God's actions display the love that true and pure. This love is a selfless, sacrifical love for all of those around you, no matter who that person maybe. That's why Jesus commands us to love God with essentiall our entire being, and to love our neighbors, those around us, as we love ourselves. Paul's purpose in this passage is that as Christians, we are in a constant battle against evil. He isn't saying that we should stop loving our enemies, neighbors, and others. He said that we are to persevere against evil. That includes witnessing, praying, teaching, apologetics, and such. In these ways, we do our part to combat evil. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

194 | why Jesus called Chief corner stone | Ephesians | Jesusman | 33921
Hello, There are two parts to the answer to this question. The first involves the importance of the Cornerstone in construction. In construction, the cornerstone is among the most important pieces in matters of foundation and stability. Without a good, strong, and dimentionally straight cornerstone, the whole building could be ruined, uneven, or even dangerous. In brick buildings especially, the whole entire above ground construction is built upon the Cornerstone. The cornerstone sets the measurements for the rest of the building. So, in that regards, Jesus Christ is the pattern by which the Church is patterned after. Jesus is the cornerstone by which the Church rests upon. It his saving grace that has straightened out and lined up the Church of God. Now, for the second part. In Isaiah 28:16, Isaiah gives one of his messianic prophecies concerning God's cornerstone. Paul, in Ephesians, is establishing Jesus as that Cornerstone which Isaiah speaks of. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

195 | does God have a chain of command | Ephesians | Jesusman | 191017
Well, If you believe my family, then the chain of command is God then Jesus then Grandma and stops there. However, biblically, Paul eludes in Ephesians that in the Family, God and Jesus should be the head, but that the Father/Husband of the house is the figurehead and representative of Jesus. The wife supports the husband and upholds his guidence, but also comforts him as well. The children are to honor the parents. In the church, The Pastor is the representative of Jesus and provides his guidence. The Deacons offer aid and support to the Pastor. In the work place, The employee should work and act as if he were serving God personally. So, in that reguard, you could say that the Employer is a representative of Jesus, at least in the ideal situation. Jesusman |

196 | Can I go to Heaven if I smoke? | Eph 2:8 | Jesusman | 192779
Paul applauded the Bereans for testing everything he said. 1 John 4:1 tells us to test each spirit to see if whether or not they are from God. The Bible gives one and only one requirement: Belief in God's only son, Jesus Christ. All other requirements that people list are purely for personal fullfillment. Being a smoker no more makes you unable to enter heaven than carrying a set of car keys makes you a Chevy. With all things that people tell you, be it religious or no, and be it who tells you, remember John's words in 1 John 4:1 and test what they say. If they are genuine, then what they say will be true. Test against a reputible and respected source. In this case, against the Scripture itself. Jesusman |

197 | How do I explain Eph5:22-25 to my man? | Eph 5:22 | Jesusman | 192952
Something that was pointed out to me once by a seminary professor that changed my perspective on a relationship between a man and a woman. When God made Eve, he used one of Adam's bones. A rib to be precise. The bone wasn't a bone from Adam's Skull so that Eve would be dominant over Adam and subjugate him to her will. The bone wasn't from Adam's foot so he could stomp on her, and subjugate her under his will. The Bone was a rib. The Rib cage protects the inner organs, such as the heart. It was under the arm so that Adam can comfort and protect her. No where in the Bible is the command given for men to make slaves of their women. Yes, women are commanded to be submissive to their own husbands, but Husbands are told to love their wives as Christ loved the Church. Point out the passage following verse 25 where Paul speaks to the Husbands. Both of you sit down and read both passages over and over together. Pray about it. Jesusman |

198 | Doesn't John 14:28 disprove the Trinity? | Phil 2:6 | Jesusman | 40912
Hello, Actually, John 14:28 confirms the Trinity. Jesus never claimed to be the Father. He claimed to be the Son and God. God is comprised of three things (offices, aspects, incarnations, beings, and so on). Pick one. These three are the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Now, in this verse and other verses, Jesus makes the claim that the Father is supreme with in the Trinity. Meaning, that while they share the same powers, attributes, and ability (co-equal), there is a heirarchy with in the God-head. It is the Will of the Father that the Son and Holy Spirit obey. Jesus makes this abundantly clear when he says, "Not my will, Father, but thine be done." That is what John 14:28 is refering to when it says that the Father is greater than Jesus. That the Father has authority over the Son and the Holy Spirit. Now, as for Jesus dying on the cross, Jesus says that he has been given power over his own body and existance. He says that no man can take His life. However, Jesus continues to say that He gives His own life up freely. When Jesus died on the Cross, he did so willingly. They didn't force him. So, when He died, he died physically. Now, this doesn't mean that Jesus died permanently. His spirit remained alive. In fact, the Bible teaches that the spirit is immortal. Jesus, being God, had control over his own spirit, body, and existance. He died on the cross willingly, he paid the price of sin, and took his life up again willingly. No other person has that authority and power. Only God. Jesusman |

199 | wandering why the forth commandment is | Col 2:16 | Jesusman | 31007
Hello, To answer this, Turn to Mark 2:27-28. This pretty much spells it out. The Sabbath was made for man. It was given as a time of rest. Jesus, as lord of the Sabbath, was able to do as he wished. As a result of our salvation, our observance of the Sabbath is altered from a strict observance to choosing a time better suited where we can spend time in worship with God. That day, was changed from Saturday, the day the Lord Rested, to Sunday, the day the Lord rose from the grave. However, the point is still clear, as it is in the Ten Commandments, a day is to be set aside in order that we may have fellowship with God and other Christians. Jesusman |

200 | Col 1:24 What is he saying exactly? | 1 Timothy | Jesusman | 26082
As you have pointed out, Paul is clearly mentioning the things he has suffered through while spreading the gospel. As for a further meaning of the text, I would say that Paul is providing an example of the christian attitude towards serving God. In Philippians 3 and 2 Timothy 1, Paul talks about the losses he has suffered for the Lord. During his discourses, he makes it clear that his losses are meaningless and insignificant next to the rewards of heaven. I believe it is best said, "I count it all Joy that I may serve my lord." That is the attitude we must have as Christians proclaiming the gospel. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |
